Method and structure for minimizing error sources in image and position sensing detectors

A method and structure for minimizing one or more non-uniformities in image and position sensing detectors are provided. The structure is directed to a focal plane processor for removing non-uniformities which distort the computation of a desired property of an object of interest in an image field. The focal plane processor is capable of selectively disconnecting one or more rows and/or columns from further processing in the imaging array for those rows and/or columns which contribute to the presence of at least one non-uniformity in a video image generated by the focal plane processor. In one embodiment, the disconnection means is embodied as pre-processing circuitry which includes row and column shift registers which provide control signals to area-of-interest (AOI) switches. In another embodiment, the pixels which comprise the focal plane array are constructed in a manner which facilitates their individual isolation.

Analog Module Architecture for Space-Qualified Field-Programmable Mixed-Signal Arrays

Spacecraft require all manner of both digital and analog circuits. Onboard digital systems are constructed almost exclusively from field-programmable gate array (FPGA) circuits providing numerous advantages over discrete design including high integration density, high reliability, fast turn-around design cycle time, lower mass, volume, and power consumption, and lower parts acquisition and flight qualification costs. Analog and mixed-signal circuits perform tasks ranging from housekeeping to signal conditioning and processing. These circuits are painstakingly designed and built using discrete components due to a lack of options for field-programmability. FPAA (Field-Programmable Analog Array) and FPMA (Field-Programmable Mixed-signal Array) parts exist but not in radiation-tolerant technology and not necessarily in an architecture optimal for the design of analog circuits for spaceflight applications. This paper outlines an architecture proposed for an FPAA fabricated in an existing commercial digital CMOS process used to make radiation-tolerant antifuse-based FPGA devices. The primary concerns are the impact of the technology and the overall array architecture on the flexibility of programming, the bandwidth available for high-speed analog circuits, and the accuracy of the components for high-performance applications.

Space Infrared Telescope Facility/Multimission Modular Spacecraft Attitude Control System conceptual design

A control system utilizing the Multi-mission Modular Spacecraft (MMS) Attitude Control System (ACS) was developed and analyzed for the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) spacecraft. Alternative torquer augmentation schemes were studied to determine viable ACS approaches. A control law was developed to use a dual set of single-axis Control Moment Gyros (CMGs) for two-axis control. Flexible structural models were developed using a high fidelity, flight tested NASTRAN model of the MMS, coupled with a NASTRAN model of the SIRTF telescope. Modal significance criteria were employed to reduce the structural model. Multivariable interactive techniques were used to synthesize the control system (including the structural filters). Control system performance for the SIRTF operational modes (quiescent inertial hold, slewing, nodding, and rastering) was then determined using both single-axis and three-axis simulations). The control system described met performance requirements for all modes but the raster with the use of CMGs. The raster performance was limited by the structural flexibility.
