Exploring Transfers Between Earth-Moon Halo Orbits via Multi-Objective Reinforcement Learning

Multi-Reward Proximal Policy Optimization, a multi-objective deep reinforcement learning algorithm, is used to examine the design space of low-thrust trajectories for a SmallSat transferring between two libration point orbits in the Earth- Moon system. Using Multi-Reward Proximal Policy Optimiza- tion, multiple policies are simultaneously and efficiently trained on three distinct trajectory design scenarios. Each policy is trained to create a unique control scheme based on the trajectory design scenario and assigned reward function: a unique combination of weights scaling competing objectives that guide the spacecraft to the target mission orbit, incentivize faster flight times, and penalize propellant mass usage. Then, the policies are evaluated on the same set of perturbed initial conditions in each scenario to generate the propellant mass usages, flight times, and state discontinuities from a reference trajectory for each control scheme. This solution space of low-thrust trajectories for a SmallSat is used to examine the multi-objective trade space for the trajectory design scenario. By autonomously constructing the solution space, insights into the required propellant mass, flight time, and transfer geometry are rapidly achieved.

Smallsat Navigation via the Deep Space Network: Inner Solar Systems Missions

The space industry has seen an explosion in the number of operational SmallSats in Earth orbit, with a natural interest in extending SmallSat capabilities outside of low Earth orbit. As with larger missions, near-term deep-space SmallSats will rely on the Deep Space Network or similar facilities. Given the predicted growth in the number of deep space missions, effective use of DSN resources will be more critical than ever. Our investigation provides an initial survey of expected inner Solar System navigation performance for DSN radiometric data types, from two-way Doppler and ranging to one-way equivalents, including delta differential one-way range and alternative tracking strategies.

Satellite Constellation Orbit Design to Enable a Space-Based Radio Interferometer

Two different design methods for a networked constellation of N small satellites are presented. In the first method, the (linear) Clohessy-Wilthsire equations are used as an initial design tool, followed by conversion to a two-body model. Discrepancies between the linear and nonlinear solutions are minimized in the conversion process. The second method utilizes invariant manifold theory, by perturbing a reference trajectory in different directions along the center eigenvectors. Both methods require 5N parameters to fully define a constellation. In a relative, rotating frame of the reference path, the spacecraft appear as periodic ellipses of varying sizes. Deployment, reconfiguration using propulsive maneuvers, and station keeping costs for an example mission scenario are addressed.
