In-gas-jet laser spectroscopy with S 3 -LEB

The Super Separator Spectrometer-Low Energy Branch (S 3 -LEB) is a low-energy radioactive ion beam experiment under commissioning as part of the GANIL-SPIRAL2 facility. It will be used for the production and study of exotic nuclei by in-gas laser ionization and spectroscopy (IGLIS), decay spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Here, we report recent results from the off-line commissioning of S 3 -LEB, including first laser spectroscopy measurements in both the gas cell and the supersonic gas jet, the determination of the transport efficiency of laser ions from the gas cell through the RFQ chain, and time-of-flight measurements with the multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer PILGRIM. The measurements were performed using erbium, introduced by evaporation from a heated filament in the gas environment. The reported laser spectroscopy results include a characterization of the pressure broadening in the gas cell, proof-of-principle isotope shift measurements, and hyperfine-structure measurements.

High-resolution laser system for the S 3 -Low Energy Branch

Here, in this paper we present the first high-resolution laser spectroscopy results obtained at the GISELE laser laboratory of the GANIL-SPIRAL2 facility, in preparation for the first experiments with the S 3 -Low Energy Branch. Studies of neutron-deficient radioactive isotopes of erbium and tin represent the first physics cases to be studied at S 3 . The measured isotope-shift and hyperfine structure data are presented for stable isotopes of these elements. The erbium isotopes were studied using the 4f 12 6s 2 3 H 6 → 4f 12 ( 3 H)6s6p J = 5 atomic transition (415 nm) and the tin isotopes were studied by the 5s 2 5p 2 ( 3 P 0 ) → 5s 2 5p6s( 3 P 1 ) atomic transition (286.4 nm), and are used as a benchmark of the laser setup. Additionally, the tin isotopes were studied by the 5s 2 5p6s( 3 P 1 ) → 5s 2 5p6p( 3 P 2 ) atomic transition (811.6 nm), for which new isotope-shift data was obtained and the corresponding field-shift F 812 and mass-shift M 812 factors are presented.

The electron affinity of astatine

One of the most important properties influencing the chemical behavior of an element is the electron affinity (EA). Among the remaining elements with unknown EA is astatine, where one of its isotopes, 211 At, is remarkably well suited for targeted radionuclide therapy of cancer. With the At - anion being involved in many aspects of current astatine labeling protocols, the knowledge of the electron affinity of this element is of prime importance. Here we report the measured value of the EA of astatine to be 2.41578(7) eV. This result is compared to state-of-the-art relativistic quantum mechanical calculations that incorporate both the Breit and the quantum electrodynamics (QED) corrections and the electron–electron correlation effects on the highest level that can be currently achieved for many-electron systems. The developed technique of laser-photo detachment spectroscopy of radioisotopes opens the path for future EA measurements of other radioelements such as polonium, and eventually super-heavy elements.
