2D Homologous Series SrFM n BiS n +2 (M = Pb, Ag 0.5 Bi 0.5 ; n = 0, 1) and Commensurately Modulated Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2

In this work, we report three new mixed-anion two-dimensional (2D) compounds: SrFPbBiS 3 , SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 , and Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 . Their structures as well as the parent compound SrFBiS 2 were refined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, with the sequence of SrFBiS 2 , SrFPbBiS 3 , and SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 defining the new homologous series SrFM n BiS n+2 (M = Pb, Ag 0.5 Bi 0.5 ; n= 0, 1). Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 has a different structure, which is modulated with a q vector of 1/3b* and was refined in superspace group X2/m(0 β 0)00 as well as in the 1x3x1 superstructure with space group C2/m (with similar results). Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 features hexagonal layers of alternating [Sr 2 F 2 ] 2+ and [Bi 2/3 S 2 ] 2- , and the modulated structure arises from the unique ordering pattern of Sr 2+ cations. SrFPbBiS 3 , SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 , and Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 are semiconductors with band gaps of 1.31, 1.21, and 1.85 eV, respectively. The latter compound exhibits room temperature red photoluminescence at ~ 700 nm.

Optical phonon dominated heat transport: A first-principles thermal conductivity study of BaSn 2

Acoustic phonons with long mean free paths have long been believed to control the lattice thermal conductivity κ L in solids dominantly. In this study, however, we demonstrate an optical phonon dominated κ L in BaSnS 2 . By solving the Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation, we predict a low diagonal lattice thermal conductivity κ L (D) of 0.34 W m -1 K -1 at 850 K, which is less than half the κ L (D) of SnS at the same temperature. Further calculations following the Allen-Feldman model suggest the additional off-diagonal lattice thermal conductivity κ L (OD) contributed by wavelike tunneling phonons. The κ L (OD) becomes pronounced at the high temperature ( 0.17 W m -1 K -1 at 850 K) and leads to a deviation of the temperature dependence of κ L from T -1 to T -0.76 , suggesting the potential lattice anharmonicity in BaSnS 2 . Further analyses indicate BaSnS 2 has over 68% of κ L contributed by optical phonons. We show this uncommon optical phonon dominated κ L is due to the relatively high group velocities of optical phonons in BaSnS 2 . The phonon mode visualization suggests these relatively high-velocity optical phonons correspond to the antiphase vibrations in BaSnS 2 monolayers, which is originated from the unique permutation of SnS 3 tetrahedra. Finally, by investigating the mode-resolved group velocity, relaxation time, and Grüneisen parameter, we attribute the intrinsic low κ L of BaSnS 2 to the soft lattice and the relatively high lattice anharmonicity induced by the Ba-S weak bonding and Sn(II) lone-pair electrons. Our study explicitly analyzes the microscopic mechanism of optical phonon dominated heat transport in BaSnS 2 and suggests it worthy of further experimental studies as an intrinsic low-κ L material.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity, Multiband Electronic Structure and High Thermoelectric Figure of Merit in TlCuSe

The entanglement of lattice thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient complicates the process of optimizing thermoelectric performance in most thermoelectric materials. Semiconductors with ultralow lattice thermal conductivities and high power factors at the same time are scarce but fundamentally interesting and practically important for energy conversion. In this work, an intrinsic p-type semiconductor TlCuSe that has an intrinsically ultralow thermal conductivity (0.25 W m -1 K -1 ), a high power factor (11.6 μ W cm -1 K -2 ), and a high figure of merit, ZT (1.9) at 643 K is described. The weak chemical bonds, originating from the filled antibonding orbitals p-d* within the edge-sharing CuSe 4 tetrahedra and long Tl-Se bonds in the PbClF-type structure, in conjunction with the large atomic mass of Tl lead to an ultralow sound velocity. Strong anharmonicity, coming from Tl + lone-pair electrons, boosts phonon-phonon scattering rates and further suppresses lattice thermal conductivity. The multiband character of the valence band structure contributing to power factor enhancement benefits from the lone-pair electrons of Tl + as well, which modify the orbital character of the valence bands, and pushes the valence band maximum off the Gamma-point, increasing the band degeneracy. The results provide new insight on the rational design of thermoelectric materials.

Blocking Ion Migration Stabilizes the High Thermoelectric Performance in Cu 2 Se Composites

The applications of mixed ionic–electronic conductors are limited due to phase instability under a high direct current and large temperature difference. Here, it is shown that Cu 2 Se is stabilized through regulating the behaviors of Cu + ions and electrons in a Schottky heterojunction between the Cu 2 Se host matrix and in-situ-formed BiCuSeO nanoparticles. The accumulation of Cu + ions via an ionic capacitive effect at the Schottky junction under the direct current modifies the space-charge distribution in the electric double layer, which blocks the long-range migration of Cu + and produces a drastic reduction of Cu + ion migration by nearly two orders of magnitude. Moreover, this heterojunction impedes electrons transferring from BiCuSeO to Cu 2 Se, obstructing the reduction reaction of Cu + into Cu metal at the interface and hence stabilizes the β-Cu 2 Se phase. Furthermore, incorporation of BiCuSeO in Cu 2 Se optimizes the carrier concentration and intensifies phonon scattering, contributing to the peak figure of merit ZT value of ≈2.7 at 973 K and high average ZT value of ≈1.5 between 400 and 973 K for the Cu 2 Se/ BiCuSeO composites. Here, this discovery provides a new avenue for stabilizing mixed ionic–electronic conduction thermoelectrics, and gives fresh insights into controlling ion migration in these ionic-transport-dominated materials.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity and Thermoelectric Properties of Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13

Complex bismuth chalcogenides are narrow band gap semiconductors with intrinsic low thermal conductivity, which exhibit high potential as highly efficient thermoelectric materials. Here, we assess the basic thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 in the temperature range 300-823 K as well as performance-optimizing strategies. We find that the as-made bulk samples are single phase with the monoclinic crystal structure (P2 1 /m) and crystallize in layer morphology. The pristine sample exhibits an exceedingly low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.6- 0.46 W·m -1 ·K -1 at 300-823 K, which derives from strong lattice anharmonicity, large Grüneisen parameters, and low phonon velocities induced by the complex crystal structure with heavy atom Bi and a large unit cell. Here, the Cl doping successfully enhances the carrier concentration in Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 with a negligible impact on the electronic band structure, displaying common doping behaviors. Se vacancy, on the contrary, leads to n-type doping and enhances the effective mass and power factors more significantly. Consequently, a maximum ZT of ~0.75 at 823 K for the 0.3% Se-vacancy-doped sample is obtained.

Quasilinear dispersion in electronic band structure and high Seebeck coefficient in CuFeS 2 -based thermoelectric materials

The earth-abundant natural mineral chalcopyrite CuFeS 2 is a potential n-type thermoelectric material because of its large Seebeck coefficient at high carrier concentrations. For a long time, the large Seebeck coefficient of CuFeS 2 has been attributed to a large electron effective mass, but the reasons for this and the unusual carrier concentration dependent behavior have rarely been discussed. Here, we systematically investigated the special transport behavior of CuFeS 2 and found the classical parabolic band model to be inadequate in explaining it. Our experimental and theoretical studies indicate that there are two flat electronic pockets at the and Z points of the Brillouin zone near the conduction band edge of CuFeS 2 that dominate the charge transport. These electronic pockets result from nonparabolic quasilinearly dispersing bands that give rise to a linear wave vector dependent energy (E ~ k) and a carrier density dependent effective mass (m* ~ m 0 n 1/3 ). Such a strong carrier concentration dependent carrier effective mass results in the high Seebeck coefficient of CuFeS 2 compound under a large carrier density. Here, the work demonstrates that quasilinearly dispersing bands can give strongly enhanced Seebeck coefficient, and could be useful in optimizing the properties of thermoelectric materials.

Anomalously Large Seebeck Coefficient of CuFeS 2 Derives from Large Asymmetry in the Energy Dependence of Carrier Relaxation Time

The Seebeck effect in a material originates from the distribution of asymmetry in the electron transport under a temperature gradient, which has contributions from the energy-dependent electronic density-of-states and carrier mobility. However, because the energy dependence of common electron scattering mechanisms is weak, the mobility-driven Seebeck coefficient has long been ignored in most thermoelectric materials, and the energy asymmetry of the density-of-states has been considered the dominant contribution. In this work, we describe a hopping transport behavior observed in CuFeS 2 , and a large carrier Hall mobility gradient of dμH/dT that creates an unusually large energy-dependent mobility contribution to the Seebeck coefficient. This work offers several ideas regarding the mobility-driven Seebeck effect and its potential utilization in the design of thermoelectric materials.
