Interplay of pressure and temperature in modulating the magnetic properties of Cr 2 O 3

The spin-lattice interaction is pivotal in tailoring materials properties and is crucial for developing novel spintronic devices. Here, in the current work, we aim to explore the effects of pressure and temperature on the magnetic properties of Cr 2 O 3 to gain insights into its spin-lattice interaction. Through high-pressure neutron diffraction experiments, we observed an enhancement of the magnetic Bragg intensity with increasing pressure and it becomes more pronounced as the temperature increases. Results from first-principles calculations reveal a strengthening of the easy-axis magnetic anisotropy, doubling from 0 to 20 GPa. The exchange parameters, calculated based on this spin orientation, show an enhancement of the dominant magnetic interactions and an increase of magnetic ordering temperature when pressure increases. These findings suggest that the contributions from these two mechanisms are responsible for the observed increase in magnetic Bragg intensity.

Uncovering obscured phonon dynamics from powder inelastic neutron scattering using machine learning

The study of phonon dynamics is pivotal for understanding material properties, yet it faces challenges due to the irreversible information loss inherent in powder inelastic neutron scattering spectra and the limitations of traditional analysis methods. In this study, we present a machine learning framework designed to reveal obscured phonon dynamics from powder spectra. Using a variational autoencoder, we obtain a disentangled latent representation of spectra and successfully extract force constants for reconstructing phonon dispersions. Notably, our model demonstrates effective applicability to experimental data even when trained exclusively on physics-based simulations. The fine-tuning with experimental spectra further mitigates issues arising from domain shift. Analysis of latent space underscores the model’s versatility and generalizability, affirming its suitability for complex system applications. Furthermore, our framework’s two-stage design is promising for developing a universal pre-trained feature extractor. This approach has the potential to revolutionize neutron measurements of phonon dynamics, offering researchers a potent tool to decipher intricate spectra and gain valuable insights into the intrinsic physics of materials.

Temperature-dependent spin dynamics in Cr 2 O 3

Cr 2 ⁢O 3 emerges as a prominent candidate material for spintronics and magnetoelectronic applications. However, a comprehensive understanding of its temperature-dependent spin dynamics remains elusive, impeding the engineering of novel spintronics based on this material. Here, we delve into this through a combination of inelastic neutron scattering experiments and atomistic simulations. Our results unveiled the emergence of paramagnons above and below 𝑇 𝑁 . We demonstrated a significant softening of linear magnons upon heating in the antiferromagnetic state. Further analysis revealed that this softening primarily originated from four-magnon interactions, while thermal expansion played a minor role.

Mutual spin-phonon driving effects and phonon eigenvector renormalization in nickel (II) oxide

The physics of mutual interaction of phonon quasiparticles with electronic spin degrees of freedom, leading to unusual transport phenomena of spin and heat, has been a subject of continuing interests for decades. Despite its pivotal role in transport processes, the effect of spin-phonon coupling on the phonon system, especially acoustic phonon properties, has so far been elusive. By means of inelastic neutron scattering and first-principles calculations, anomalous scattering spectral intensity from acoustic phonons was identified in the exemplary collinear antiferromagnetic nickel (II) oxide, unveiling strong spin-lattice correlations that renormalize the polarization of acoustic phonon. In particular, a clear magnetic scattering signature of the measured neutron scattering intensity from acoustic phonons is demonstrated by its momentum transfer and temperature dependences. The anomalous scattering intensity is successfully modeled with a modified magneto-vibrational scattering cross-section, suggesting the presence of spin precession driven by phonon. The renormalization of phonon eigenvector is indicated by the observed “geometry-forbidden” neutron scattering intensity from transverse acoustic phonon. Importantly, the eigenvector renormalization cannot be explained by magnetostriction but instead, it could result from the coupling between phonon and local magnetization of ions.

Frustration-induced diffusive scattering anomaly and dimension change in FeGe 2

Magnetic frustration, arising from the competition of exchange interactions, has received great attention because of its relevance to exotic quantum phenomena in materials. In the current work, we report an unusual checkerboard-shaped scattering anomaly in FeGe 2 , far from the known incommensurate magnetic satellite peaks, by inelastic neutron scattering. More surprisingly, such phenomenon appears as spin dynamics at low temperature, but it becomes prominent above Néel transition as elastic scattering. Here, a model Hamiltonian that includes an intraplane next-nearest neighbor was proposed and such anomaly is attributed to the near-perfect magnetic frustration and the emergence of unexpected two-dimensional magnetic order in the quasi-one-dimensional FeGe 2 .

Matryoshka phonon twinning in α-GaN

Understanding lattice dynamics is crucial for effective thermal management in electronic devices because phonons dominate thermal transport in most semiconductors. α -GaN has become a focus of interest as one of the most important third-generation power semiconductors, however, the knowledge on its phonon dynamics remains limited. Here we show a Matryoshka phonon dispersion of α -GaN with the complementary inelastic X-ray and neutron scattering techniques and the first-principles calculations. Such Matryoshka twinning throughout the basal plane of the reciprocal space is demonstrated to amplify the anharmonicity of the related phonons through creating abundant three-phonon scattering channels and cutting the lifetime of affected modes by more than 50%. Such phonon topology contributes to reducing the in-plane thermal transport, thus the anisotropic thermal conductivity of α -GaN. The results not only have implications for engineering the thermal performance of α -GaN, but also offer valuable insights on the role of anomalous phonon topology in thermal transport of other technically semiconductors.
