A procedure is presented to determine the order in which to inspect the components of a failed series system so as to minimize the expected time until the failed component is isolated. The model includes the case in which inspection of a component may falsely indicate the component is functioning.
A system which can generate multiple signals such that each signal can have different quality states is modeled. A measure of the effectiveness of the system as a function of the status of its components is developed. Assuming only that the probability distribution of the status of each component is known, bounds on the probability distribution of the system's measure of effectiveness are developed.
