The even-odd systematics in R-process nuclide abundances

The paper reports and discusses solar system N(R) abundances for nuclides A greater than 70, obtained as differences between measured solar system abundances and calculated S-process contributions. The abundance peak at A of about 163 in the rare earth element region reveals properties which are similar to those of the R-process peaks corresponding to magic neutron numbers N = 82 and N = 126. Systematic differences in the N(R) abundances of even-A and odd-A nuclides are restricted to specific mass regions. It is concluded that these differences are most probably related to the properties of nuclear species during beta(-) decay to the stability valley.

A direct time series comparison between the La Jolla and Belfast radiocarbon records

For many years it has been widely assumed that the variations in the level of atmospheric carbon-14 were due to statistical fluctuations arising from experimental error. This is understandable since the signal/noise ratio is very low and the time sequences representing the variations are strongly stochastic. Interlaboratory comparisons show that baseline variations in the absolute value of the carbon-14 concentration do exist. However, assuming linearity, the delta 14C values are independent of these. The importance of assessing the quantitive reality of the delta 14C values is based upon their expression of the interplanetary cosmic ray source function, because in the range of 100 to 1000 year periods, there appears to be no evidence that the Earth's magnetic field is the source modulating function. Therefore the modulation is either due to changes in the solar atmosphere propagated out into the solar wind, or extra-heliospheric pressure effects, but these appear to be unlikely for the periods noted here. The recent availability of the new high quality Belfast time sequence of delta 14C now permits a simple mutual assessment of the several sequences which are available. Since the La Jolla record has been a standard for many years , these two were chosen for a simple comparison. Although differences exist, the close agreement between these two sequences, one carried out on White mountain Bristlecone pines, and the other done using Irish peat bog wood, is striking. This correlation between the two strongly reinforces the statistical view that the delta 14C record is that of real interplanetary modulation of the cosmic ray source leading to the generation of atmospheric 14C.

Can the ordinary chondrites have condensed from a gas phase

The conditions under which ordinary chondrites containing iron in three different chemical states can form in thermodynamic equilibrium with a gas phase are calculated. Hydrogen depletion factors of 100-1000 are obtained and the formation of liquid condensates from residual gases occurs at pressures (prior to hydrogen depletion) of roughly equal to or greater than 1 atm.

Can enstatite meteorites form from a nebula of solar composition

Doubts have been expressed as to whether solar matter is sufficiently reducing to explain the minerals occurring in the enstatite chondrites and in the enstatite achondrites. Thermodynamic calculations on the stabilities of TiN, Si2N2O, CaS and silicon-bearing iron metal show that these substances can form under equilibrium conditions from a nebula of solar composition provided that the total pressure exceeds about 1 atm and that thermodynamic equilibria are frozen in at near-formation temperatures.

The abundances of the heavy elements.

Abundance regularities for heavy nuclei (A greater than 58) are investigated and formulated as abundance rules. Abundance values of carbonaceous chondrites of type 1 and 2 as well as most probable values for primordial abundances are listed. The abundance rules definitely require minor correctons of the empirical values. A measurement of the (u, gamma) cross-section of Pd-104 would make possible to decide whether type-1 or type-2 carbonaceous chondrites have a more primitive elemental composition.
