Voltage-Dependent Photoluminescence of Carbon Dots

Carbon dots are fluorescent carbon-based nanoparticles with great potential in bioimaging because they offer multiple imaging windows owing to their excitation dependent emission features. A recent theory study shows that emission of graphene quantum dots responds to external elec. field due to Stark effect. Inspired by this work, we have demonstrated here the first exptl. study of the Stark effect of fluorescent carbon dots synthesized via a soft-template method. The carbon dots exhibit excitation-dependent emission covering blue to orange emission range. After being encapsulated in artificial lipid bilayers, the carbon dots show voltage-sensitivity of fluorescence. The fluorescence intensity change per mV is comparable with that of com. membrane potential sensing dyes. Our results demonstrate the great potential of carbon dots in membrane voltage sensing.

Metabolites of Tobacco- and E-Cigarette-Related Nitrosamines Can Drive Cu 2+ -Mediated DNA Oxidation

Nitrosamine metabolites resulting from cigarette smoking and E-cigarette (E-cig) vaping cause DNA damage that can lead to genotoxicity. While DNA adducts of metabolites of nitrosamines 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) and N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) are well-known tobacco-related cancer biomarkers, only a few studies implicate NNN and NNK in DNA oxidation in humans. NNK and NNN were found in the urine of E-cigarette users who never smoked cigarettes. This paper proposes the first chemical pathways of DNA oxidation driven by NNK and NNN metabolites in redox reactions with Cu 2+ and NADPH leading to reactive oxygen species (ROS). A microfluidic array with thin films of DNA and metabolic enzymes that make metabolites of NNN and NNK in the presence of Cu 2+ and NADPH was used to estimate relative rates of DNA oxidation. Detection by electrochemiluminescence (ECL) employed a new ECL dye [Os(tpy-benz-COOH) 2 ] 2+ that is selective for and sensitive to the primary DNA oxidation product 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) in DNA. Enzyme–DNA films on magnetic beads were used to produce nitrosamine metabolites that enter ROS-forming redox cycles with Cu 2+ and NADPH, and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) was used to quantify 8-oxodG and identify metabolites. ROS were detected by optical sensors. Metabolites of NNK and NNN + Cu 2+ + NADPH generated relatively high rates of DNA oxidation. Lung is the exposure route in smoking and vaping, human lung tissue contains Cu 2+ and NADPH, and lung microsomal enzymes gave the highest rates of DNA oxidation in this study. Furthermore, E-cigarette vapor contains 6-fold more copper than that in cigarette smoke, which could exacerbate DNA oxidation.

Materials and Approaches for Mitigation of SOFC Cathode Degradation in SOFC Power Systems

Perovskites such as doped lanthanum manganite and cobaltite have been used successfully as a cathode material in SOFC power systems operating between 700-1000°C. The electrodes, however, remain prone to degradation in presence of Cr containing gas atmosphere under systems operating conditions. Cathode in SOFCs is considered as one of the largest contributors of electrochemical performance degradations, leading to significant increase in ohmic and non-ohmic losses as well as interfacial compound formation. These degradations are mostly irreversible due to permanent changes to chemical and morphological alterations in the electrodes, resulting in the blockage of triple phase boundary (TPB) sites and decrease in oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). Fundamental mechanistic understanding has been developed to elucidate the reaction pathways of electrode poisoning in electronically conducting electrodes (LSM) as well as mixed ionic and electronically conducting electrodes (LSCF). The overall goal of this program has been identification and development of cost effective solutions to mitigate electrode degradations under “real world” systems operating conditions. The overall technological innovations and impact from this work are: The research provides an understanding of the degradation mechanism and cost-effective approaches for implementation in SOFC systems; Develop mitigation processes utilizing low cost getters using conventional synthesis and fabrication route; Develop tailored high surface area powders and coatings for high Cr capture capacity under systems operating conditions; >Developed computational models to understand mechanistic behavior; Experimentally measure rate of Cr evaporation from chromia and alumina forming alloys under SOFC operating conditions; Developed conditions to minimize Cr evaporation from balance-of-plant alloys; This innovation will support the development of getter platform to capture both intrinsic and extrinsic impurities present in air; and, Applications under wide operating temperature range (500-900°C) as well for wide high-temperature electrochemical systems (SOFC, SOEC, and OTM). The work has been successfully developed, validated experimentally and implemented. Successful technology transfer of this knowledge with industrial partners has been accomplished and the getters have been independently tested and validated under their systems operating conditions. The innovation will also find application in related high temperature electrochemical systems such as OTM and SOEC for the prevention of Cr assisted performance degradation. The proposed approach for Cr capture can also be applied to oxy-combustion and other advanced combustion techniques for the reduction of Cr vapor in the exhaust gas stream. This fundamental knowledge gained also has led to the path forward for developing advanced getters for capturing more than one contaminant in air.

One-Pot Aqueous and Template-Free Synthesis of Mesoporous Polymeric Resins

This report explores the novel one-pot aqueous phase synthesis of mesoporous phenolic-hyperbranched polyethyleneimine resins without the use of a template, and their utility as heterogeneous catalysts in batch reactors and continuous microreactors. Catalyst surface areas of up to 432 m 2 /g were achieved with a uniform Pd distribution and an interconnected, highly porous, network structure, confirmed through Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopes (SEM), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The heterogeneous catalysts achieved a maximum 98.98 ± 1% conversion in batch Suzuki couplings, with conversions being dependent upon reaction conditions, reactant chemistries, Pd loading and catalyst surface area. The catalysts were shown to be recyclable with only a marginal loss in conversion achieved after five runs. Up to 62 ± 5% and 46.5 ± 8% conversions at 0.2 mL/s and 0.4 mL/s flow rates, respectively, were achieved in a continuous microreactor. Understanding the mechanism of action of this mesoporous resin is a future research area, which could help expand the application vistas for this catalyst platform.

Selective Fabrication of Barium Carbonate Nanoparticles in the Lumen of Halloysite Nanotubes

Barium carbonate (BaCO 3 ) materials with the controllable morphology of nanoparticles were selectively loaded into the lumen halloysite nanotubes (abbreviated as A-Hal) by a urease assisted catalytic implementation strategy. The Hal mineral was pre-treated through leaching by hydrochloric acid (abbreviated as A-Hal), resulting in increased defect sites and zeta potential. The negatively charged urease was loaded inside the positively charged A-Hal lumen, and then through the decomposition of urea catalyzed by urease to produce carbonate ions and ammonia. When Ba 2+ diffused in, BaCO 3 particles were selectively synthesized in the lumen of A-Hal, the pore channels of A-Haleffectively controlled the growth and aggregation of BaCO 3 nanocrystals and their geometrical morphology. The obtained BaCO 3 /A-Hal-T was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetry (DSC-TG). The BaCO 3 /A-Hal-T may provide a candidate for potential applications.
