Performance of PIP-II high-beta 650 cryomodule after transatlantic shipping

After shipment to the Daresbury Lab and return to Fermilab, the prototype HB650 cryomodule underwent another phase of 2K RF testing to ascertain any performance issues that may have arisen from the transport of the cryomodule. While measurements taken at room temperature after the conclusion of shipment indicated that there were no negative impacts on cavity alignment, beamline vacuum, or cavity frequency, testing at 2K was required to validate other aspects such as tuner operation, cavity coupling, cryogenic system integrity, and cavity performance. Results of this latest round of limited 2K testing will be presented.

Simulations of field emitters and multipacting in PIP-II Single Spoke Resonator Type-2

It has been found in benchmark tests that some Single Spoke Resonator Type-2 (SSR2) cavities have early field emission onset as well as strong multipacting barriers. A longstanding hypothesis is that field-emitted electrons in the high electric field accelerating gap can migrate and ignite multipacting bands in the low electric field regions of the cavity periphery. In this study, we use simulation techniques to examine multipacting behavior in SSR2 cavities from electrons seeded in common field emitter locations. Additionally, we investigated seed locations for areas in SSR2 cavities which may have poor coverage during high pressure water rinsing and compared the multipacting behavior.

Contribution of IN2P3 to PIP-II Project: Plans and Progress

IJCLab is one of the labs of IN2P3 (National institute of nuclear and particle physics), one of the ten research institutes composing the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). Since 2018, IJCLab has been involved in the PIP-II project, assisting with the design, development, and qualification of accelerator components for the SSR2 (Single Spoke Resonator type 2) section of the superconducting linac. The first pre-production components (cavity, coupler, and tuner) have been fabricated, and some of the first qualification tests have been performed at IJCLab. This paper will summarize the complete scope of IJCLab¿s contributions to PIP-II and give updates on the performances of the first pre-production components.

Validation of the 650 MHz SRF Tuner on the Low and High Beta Cavities for PIP-II at 2 K

The PIP-II linac will include thirty-six B_{G}=0.61 and twenty-four B_{G}=0.92 650 MHz 5 cell elliptical SRF cavities. Each cavity will be equipped with a tuning system consisting of a double lever slow tuner for coarse frequency tuning and a piezoelectric actuator for fine frequency tuning. The same tuner will be used for both the B_{G}=0.61 and B_{G}=0.92 cavities. Results of testing the cavity-tuner system for the B_{G}=0.61 will be presented for the first time.

Beam Commissioning and Integrated Test of the PIP-II Injector Test Facility

The PIP-II Injector Test (PIP2IT) facility is a near-complete low energy portion of the Superconducting PIP-II linac driver. PIP2IT comprises the warm front end and the first two PIP-II superconducting cryomodules. PIP2IT is designed to accelerate a 2 mA H⁻ beam to an energy of 20 MeV. The facility serves as a testbed for a number of advanced technologies required to operate PIP-II and provides an opportunity to gain experience with commissioning of the superconducting linac, significantly reducing project technical risks. Some PIP2IT components are contributions from international partners, who also lend their expertise to the accelerator project. The project has been successfully commissioned with the beam in 2021, demonstrating the performance required for the LBNF/DUNE. In this paper, we describe the facility and its critical systems. We discuss our experience with the integrated testing and beam commissioning of PIP2IT, and present commissioning results. This important milestone ushers in a new era at Fermilab of proton beam delivery using superconducting radio-frequency accelerators.

Validation of the 650 MHz SRF Cavity Tuner for PIP-II at 2 K

The PIP-II linac will include thirty-six β=0.61 and twenty-four β=0.92 650 MHz 5 cell elliptical SRF cavities. Each cavity will be equipped with a tuning system consisting of a double lever slow tuner for coarse frequency tuning and a piezoelectric actuator for fine frequency tuning. One dressed cavity equipped with an SRF tuner has been tested in the horizontal test stand at Fermilab. Results of testing the cavity-tuner system will be presented.

Toward Qualifications of HB and LB 650 MHz Cavities for the Prototype Cryomodules for the PIP-II Project

High-beta (HB) and low-beta (LB) 650 MHz cryomodules are key components of the Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) project. In this contribution we present the results of several 5-cell HB650 cavities that have been processed and tested with the purpose of qualifying them for the prototype cryomodule assembly, which will take place later this year. We also present the first results obtained in LB650 single-cell cavities process optimization. Taking advantage of their very similar geometry, we are also analyzing the effect of different surface treatments in FRIB’s 5-cell medium-beta 644MHz cavities. Cavities processed with N-doping and mid-T baking showed very promising results in term of both Q-factors and accelerating gradient for these low-beta structures.

STC Qualification Tests of PIP-II HB650 Cavities

Design of the high beta 650 MHz prototype cryomodule for PIP-II is currently undergoing at Fermilab. The cryomodule includes six 5-cell elliptical SRF cavities with accelerating voltage up to 20 MV and low heat dissipation (Q₀ > 3.3 · 10^{z}EhNZeHn). Characterization of performance of fully integrated jacketed cavities with high power coupler and tuner is crucial for the project. Such a characterization of jacketed cavity requires a horizontal test cryostat. The Fermilab Spoke Test Cryostat (STC) has been upgraded to accommodate testing of 650 MHz cavities. Commissioning of upgraded STC has been reported at SRF’19 conference. In this paper we present results of testing of the prototype HB650 cavity in upgraded STC facility. We characterize cavity performance and qualify it for the prototype HB650 cryomodule assembly.

Test Results of the Prototype SSR1 Cryomodule for PIP-II at Fermilab

A prototype cryomodule containing eight Single Spoke Resonators type-1 (SSR1) operating at 325 MHz and four superconducting focusing lenses has been successfully assembled and cold tested in the framework of PIP-II project at Fermilab. The performance of cavities and focusing lenses along with test results of other cryomodule’s key parameters are presented in this contribution.

Status of PIP-II 650 MHz Prototype Dressed Cavity Qualification

Low-beta and high-beta sections of PIP-II linac will use nine low-beta cryomodules with four cavities each and four high-beta cryomodules with six cavities each. These cavities will be produced and qualified in collaboration between Fermilab and the international partner labs. Prior to their installation into prototype cryomodules, several dressed cavities, which include jacketed cavities, high power couplers, and tuners, will be qualified in STC horizontal test bed at Fermilab. After qualification of bare β = 0.9 cavities at Fermilab, several pre-production β = 0.92 and β = 0.61 cavities have been and are being fabricated and qualified. Procurements have also been started for high power couplers and tuners. In this contribution we present the current status of prototype dressed cavity qualification for PIP-II.

Microphonics Studies at STC in Fermilab

The spoke test cryostat is used to qualify the 325 MHz single spoke resonators at Fermilab (FNAL). During these tests a large detuning on the cavity was observed. The data acquisition for continuous captures were based on measurements from the piezoelectric actuators. A com-parison of the cavity vibrations measured with RF signal from the cavity and piezoelectric actuator signals are shown. The effects of microphonics on the cavity are discussed.
