Communication — The Impact of Co-solvent Selection for Dimethyl-2,5-dioxahexane carboxylate in Sodium Ion Batteries

Traditional linear carbonates including dimethyl carbonate (DMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) were investigated as co-solvents for the dimethyl-2,5-dioxahexane carboxylate (DMOHC)-based electrolyte in Na 0.97 Ca 0.03 [Mn 0.39 Fe 0.31 Ni 0.22 Zn 0.08 ]O 2 (NCMFNZO)/hard carbon (HC) pouch cells. The EMC-containing cell displays excellent electrochemical performance, exhibiting only a 1.6 mAh irreversible capacity loss during 500 h of storage at 4 V and 40 °C, and maintaining over 80% capacity retention after 200 cycles up to 4 V at 40 °C. Severe gas evolution and Na plating issues are present in all the tested systems.

Understanding High-Voltage Behavior of Sodium-Ion Battery Cathode Materials Using Synchrotron X-ray and Neutron Techniques: A Review

Despite substantial research efforts in developing high-voltage sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) as high-energy-density alternatives to complement lithium-ion-based energy storage technologies, the lifetime of high-voltage SIBs is still associated with many fundamental scientific questions. In particular, the structure phase transition, oxygen loss, and cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) decay are intensely discussed in the field. Synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering characterization techniques offer unique capabilities for investigating the complex structure and dynamics of high-voltage cathode behavior. In this review, to accelerate the development of stable high-voltage SIBs, we provide a comprehensive and thorough overview of the use of synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering in studying SIB cathode materials with an emphasis on high-voltage layered transition metal oxide cathodes. We then discuss these characterizations in relation to polyanion-type cathodes, Prussian blue analogues, and organic cathode materials. Finally, future directions of these techniques in high-voltage SIB research are proposed, including CEI studies for polyanion-type cathodes and the extension of neutron scattering techniques, as well as the integration of morphology and phase characterizations.

Tuning Photoexcited Charge Transfer in Imine-Linked Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks

The generation of a long-lived charge-separated state in versatile π-conjugated two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs), a process essential to extending their great potentials in advanced semiconducting applications, is yet fully elucidated. Herein, we report a systematic investigation of the photophysical properties of three highly crystalline imine-linked 2D COFs using steady-state and transient absorption spectroscopy accompanied by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. The different electron affinity between 5,5',5''-(1,3,5-benzenetriyl)-tris(2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde) (BTPA) and three tunable electron-donating/accepting triamine monomers dominated the formation of the excited state, charge transfer direction and lifetime. A prominent charge transfer from electron-rich 4,4',4''-triaminotriphenylamine (TAPA) to BTPA in COFTAPA-BTPA led to the long-lived charge-separated state, which was attributed to a greater degree of delocalization compared to the two other COFs. Furthermore, these results provide fundamental insight into the importance of structure-property correlation for designing advanced photoactive 2D COF materials with the efficient charge transfer and long-lived charge-separated state.

A long-life lithium-oxygen battery via a molecular quenching/mediating mechanism

The advancement of lithium-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) batteries has been hindered by challenges including low discharge capacity, poor energy efficiency, severe parasitic reactions, etc. We report an Li-O 2 battery operated via a new quenching/mediating mechanism that relies on the direct chemical reactions between a versatile molecule and superoxide radical/Li 2 O 2 . The battery exhibits a 46-fold increase in discharge capacity, a low charge overpotential of 0.7 V, and an ultralong cycle life >1400 cycles. Featuring redox-active 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy moieties bridged by a quenching-active perylene diimide backbone, the tailor-designed molecule acts as a redox mediator to catalyze discharge/charge reactions and serves as a reusable superoxide quencher to chemically react with superoxide species generated during battery operation. The all-in-one molecule can simultaneously tackle issues of parasitic reactions associated with superoxide radicals, singlet oxygen, high overpotentials, and lithium corrosion. The molecular design of multifunctional additives combining various capabilities opens a new avenue for developing high-performance Li-O 2 batteries.

Chemically Stable Polyarylether-Based Metallophthalocyanine Frameworks with High Carrier Mobilities for Capacitive Energy Storage

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with efficient charge transport and exceptional chemical stability are emerging as an import class of semiconducting materials for opto-/electronic devices and energy-related applications. However, the limited synthetic chemistry to access such materials and the lack of mechanistic understanding of carrier mobility greatly hinder their practical applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of three chemically stable polyarylether-based metallophthalocyanine COFs (PAE-PcM, M = Cu, Ni, and Co) and facile in situ growth of their thin films on various substrates (i.e., SiO 2 /Si, ITO, quartz) under solvothermal conditions. We show that PAE-PcM COFs thin films with van der Waals layered structures exhibit p -type semiconducting properties with the intrinsic mobility up to ~19.4 cm 2 V -1 s -1 and 4 orders of magnitude of increase in conductivity for PAE-PcCu film (0.2 S m -1 ) after iodine doping. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the carrier transport in the framework is anisotropic, with the out-of-plane hole transport along columnar stacked phthalocyanine more favorable. Furthermore, PAE-PcCo shows the redox behavior maximumly contributes ~88.5% of its capacitance performance, giving rise to a high surface area normalized capacitance of ~19 μF cm -2 . Overall, this work not only offers fundamental understandings of electronic properties of polyarylether-based 2D COFs but also paves the way for their energy-related applications.

Resistive Switching Memory Performance of Two-Dimensional Polyimide Covalent Organic Framework Films

Two-dimensional polyimide covalent organic framework (2D PI-NT COF) films were constructed on indium tin oxide-coated glass substrates to fabricate two-terminal sandwiched resistive memory devices. The 2D PI-NT COF films condensated from the reaction between 4,4',4"-triaminotriphenylamine and naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic dianhydride under solvothermal conditions demonstrated high crystallinity, good orientation preference, tunable thickness, and low surface roughness. The well-aligned electron-donor (triphenylamine unit) and -acceptor (naphthalene diimide unit) arrays rendered the 2D PI-NT COF films a promising candidate for electronic applications. The memory devices based on 2D PI-NT COF films exhibited a typical write-once-read-many-time resistive switching behavior under an operating voltage of +2.30 V on the positive scan and -2.64 V on the negative scan. A high ON/OFF current ratio (>10 6 for the positive scan and 10 4 -10 6 for the negative scan) and long-term retention time indicated the high fidelity, low error, and high stability of the resistive memory devices. The memory behavior was attributed to an electric field-induced intramolecular charge transfer in an ordered donor-acceptor system, which provided the effective charge-transfer channels for injected charge carriers. Furthermore, this work represents the first example that explores the resistive memory properties of 2D PI-COF films, shedding light on the potential application of 2D COFs as information storage media.
