Increased Asian Sulfate Aerosol Emissions Remarkably Enhance Sahel Summer Precipitation

Observational evidence shows that Sahel summer precipitation has experienced a considerable increase since the 1980s, coinciding with significant diverging trends of increased sulfate emissions in Asia and decreased emissions in Europe (dipole pattern of aerosols between Asia and Europe). The decrease in European sulfate aerosols has substantial effects on the Sahel summer precipitation increase, but the corresponding effect of increased Asian sulfate is unknown. Multi-model simulations in the Precipitation Driver and Response Model Intercomparison Project (PDRMIP) show, compared to decreased European aerosols, that increased Asian aerosols similarly enhance the Sahel summer precipitation but with different large-scale atmospheric circulation changes. Further analysis of the Sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) simulations under historical attribution and various emission scenarios reinforces the results about the climate impacts of anthropogenic aerosols and suggests that in future scenarios with strong international cooperation and rapid climate mitigations (SSP2-45), the Sahel drought will be intensified likely due to the decline in Asian aerosol emissions. Our results suggest that Asian anthropogenic aerosols are likely a non-negligible driver of the recent recovery in Sahel precipitation amounts

Convergence Analysis for an Online Data-Driven Feedback Control Algorithm

This paper presents convergence analysis of a novel data-driven feedback control algorithm designed for generating online controls based on partial noisy observational data. The algorithm comprises a particle filter-enabled state estimation component, estimating the controlled system’s state via indirect observations, alongside an efficient stochastic maximum principle-type optimal control solver. By integrating weak convergence techniques for the particle filter with convergence analysis for the stochastic maximum principle control solver, we derive a weak convergence result for the optimization procedure in search of optimal data-driven feedback control. Numerical experiments are performed to validate the theoretical findings.

MaterialsMap: A CALPHAD-based tool to design composition pathways through feasibility map for desired dissimilar materials, demonstrated with resistance spot welding joining of Ag-Al-Cu

Assembly of dissimilar metals can be achieved by different methods, for example, casting, welding, and additive manufacturing (AM). However, undesired phases formed in liquid-phase assembling processes due to solute segregation during solidification diminish mechanical and other properties of the processed parts. In the present work, an open-source software named MaterialsMap, has been developed based on the CALculation of Phase Diagrams (CALPHAD) approach. The primary objective of MaterialsMap is to facilitate the design of an optimal composition pathway for assembling dissimilar alloys with liquid-phases based on the formation of desired and undesired phases along the pathway. In MaterialsMap, equilibrium thermodynamic calculations are used to predict equilibrium phases formed at slow cooling rate, while Scheil-Gulliver simulations are employed to predict non-equilibrium phases formed during rapid cooling. Additionally, by combining these two simulations, MaterialsMap offers a thorough guide for understanding phase formation in various manufacturing processes, assisting users in making informed decisions during material selection and production. As a demonstration of this approach, a compositional pathway was designed from pure Al to pure Cu through Ag using MaterialsMap. The design was experimentally verified using resistance spot welding (RSW).

Additively manufactured Ni-20Cr to V functionally graded material: Computational predictions and experimental verification of phase formations

Throughout this work, a database for the Cr-Ni-V system was constructed by modeling the binary Cr-V and ternary Cr-Ni-V systems using the CALPHAD approach aided by density functional theory (DFT)-based first-principles calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. To validate this new database, a functionally graded material (FGM) using Ni-20Cr and elemental V was fabricated using directed energy deposition additive manufacturing (DED AM) and experimentally characterized. The deposited Ni-20Cr was pure fcc phase, while increasing the amount of V across the gradient resulted in the formation of sigma phase, followed by the bcc phase. The experimentally measured phase data was compared with computational predictions made using a Cr-Ni-V thermodynamic database from the literature as well as the database developed in the present work. The newly developed database was shown to better predict the experimentally observed phases due to its accurate modeling of binary systems within the database and the ternary liquid phase, which is critical for accurate Scheil calculations.

Thermodynamic modeling of the Nb-Ni system with uncertainty quantification using PyCalphad and ESPEI

Here, the Nb–Ni system is remodeled with uncertainty quantification (UQ) using software tools of PyCalphad and ESPEI (the Extensible, Self-optimizing Phase Equilibria Infrastructure) with the presently implemented capability of modeling site fraction based on Wyckoff positions. The five- and three-sublattice models are used to model the topologically close pack (TCP) μ-Nb 7 Ni 6 and δ-NbNi 3 phases according to their Wyckoff positions. The inputs for CALPHAD-based thermodynamic modeling include the thermochemical data as a function of temperature predicted by first-principles and phonon calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, together with phase equilibrium and site fraction data in the literature. In addition to phase diagram and thermodynamic properties, the CALPHAD-based predictions of site fractions of Nb in μ-Nb 7 Ni 6 agree well with experimental data. Furthermore, the UQ estimation using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method as implemented in ESPEI is applied to study the uncertainty of site fraction in μ-Nb 7 Ni 6 and enthalpy of mixing (ΔH mix ) in liquid.

High Throughput Computational Framework of Materials Properties for Extreme Environments

This project aims to establish a framework capable of efficiently predicting the properties of structural materials for service in harsh environments over a wide range of temperatures and over long periods of time. The approach is to develop and integrate high throughput first-principles calculations in combination with machine learning (ML) methods, perform high throughput CALPHAD (calculations of phase diagrams) modeling, and carry out finite element method (FEM) simulations. Relevant to high temperature service in fossil power system, nickel-based superalloys such as Inconel 740 and Haynes 282 as well as the associated (Ni-Cr-Co)-Al-C-Fe-Mn-Mo-Nb-Si-Ti system, were investigated. The present framework was built on the concept of phase-based property data, in which properties of individual phases are modeled as a function of internal and external independent variables. This project established an open-source infrastructure with the following capabilities: (1) High throughput implementation of first-principles calculations at finite temperatures and variable compositions using both accurate phonon calculations and the efficient Debye model for thermodynamic properties, elastic constants, diffusion coefficients, vacancy formation, stacking and twin faults, and dislocation mobility; i.e., using the developed code DFTTK; (2) Machine learning capabilities to predict the above properties so that the number of first-principles calculations can be significantly reduced; e.g., using the developed code SIPFENN; (3) High throughput CALPHAD modeling of the above properties as a function of temperature and composition using our unique capability based on ESPEI and PyCalphad; (4) New capabilities to predict the stress-strain behavior of individual phases; and (5) New models for tensile strength prediction in common FEM software with the crystal plasticity finite element simulations (CPFEM).

Thermodynamic modeling of the Pd–Zn system with uncertainty quantification and its implication to tailor catalysts

Pd–Zn intermetallic catalysts show encouraging combinations of activity and selectivity on well-defined active site ensembles. Thermodynamic description of the Pd–Zn system, delineating phase boundaries and enumerating site occupancies within intermediate alloy phases, is essential to determining the ensembles of Pd–Zn atoms as a function of composition and temperature. Combining the present extensive first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and available experimental data, the Pd–Zn system was remodeled using the CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) approach. High throughput modeling tools with uncertainty quantification, i.e., ESPEI and PyCalphad, were incorporated in the phase analysis. Here, the site occupancies across the γ phase composition region were given special attention. A four-sublattice model was used for the γ phase owing to its four Wyckoff positions, i.e., the outer tetrahedral (OT) site 8c, the inner tetrahedral (IT) site 8c, the octahedral (OH) site 12e, and the cuboctahedral (CO) site 24g. The site fractions of Pd and Zn calculated from the present thermodynamic model show the occupancy preference of Pd in the OT and OH sublattices in agreement with experimental observations. The force constants obtained from DFT-based phonon calculations further supports the tendency of Pd occupying the OH sublattice compared with the IT and CO sublattice. The catalytic ensembles changing from Pd monomers (Pd 1 ) to trimers (Pd 3 ) on the surface of γ phase are attributed to the increase of Pd occupancy in the OH sublattice.

Understanding formation mechanisms of intermetallic compounds in dissimilar Al/steel joint processed by resistance spot welding

Here, this paper confirmed the formation mechanism of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) in Al/steel resistance spot welds with transmission electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, nanoindentation and thermodynamic calculations. In particular, the formation of AlFe with BCC_B2 structure, which is not commonly seen in welds, was identified. The formation mechanism of IMCs at the high welding energy region is described as follows. Al 13 Fe 4 first nucleates from the Al side, followed by Al 5 Fe 2 growth with Fe atoms accumulating at the Al 13 Fe 4 grain boundaries. Then, Al 5 Fe 2 grains grow continuously to coarse columnar grains, and AlFe forms at the interface of Al 5 Fe 2 grains and the ferrite phase. Lastly, the needle-like Al 13 Fe 4 forms in the cooling process. At the middle welding energy region, only equiaxed Al 5 Fe 2 and small Al 13 Fe 4 grains are formed at the interface because of the lower diffusion rates of Al and Fe, hence postponing the growth of Al 5 Fe 2 and Al 13 Fe 4 . At the low welding energy region, only sporadic Al 5 Fe 2 and Al 13 Fe 4 grains are formed surrounded by the Al phase.

Forming mechanism of equilibrium and non-equilibrium metallurgical phases in dissimilar aluminum/steel (Al–Fe) joints

Abstract Forming metallurgical phases has a critical impact on the performance of dissimilar materials joints. Here, we shed light on the forming mechanism of equilibrium and non-equilibrium intermetallic compounds (IMCs) in dissimilar aluminum/steel joints with respect to processing history (e.g., the pressure and temperature profiles) and chemical composition, where the knowledge of free energy and atomic diffusion in the Al–Fe system was taken from first-principles phonon calculations and data available in the literature. We found that the metastable and ductile (judged by the presently predicted elastic constants) Al 6 Fe is a pressure ( P ) favored IMC observed in processes involving high pressures. The MoSi 2 -type Al 2 Fe is brittle and a strong P -favored IMC observed at high pressures. The stable, brittle η-Al 5 Fe 2 is the most observed IMC (followed by θ-Al 13 Fe 4 ) in almost all processes, such as fusion/solid-state welding and additive manufacturing (AM), since η-Al 5 Fe 2 is temperature-favored, possessing high thermodynamic driving force of formation and the fastest atomic diffusivity among all Al–Fe IMCs. Notably, the ductile AlFe 3 , the less ductile AlFe, and most of the other IMCs can be formed during AM, making AM a superior process to achieve desired IMCs in dissimilar materials. In addition, the unknown configurations of Al 2 Fe and Al 5 Fe 2 were also examined by machine learning based datamining together with first-principles verifications and structure predictions. All the IMCs that are not P- favored can be identified using the conventional equilibrium phase diagram and the Scheil-Gulliver non-equilibrium simulations.

Thermodynamic properties of the Nd-Bi system via emf measurements, $\mathrm{DFT}$ calculations, machine learning, and $\mathrm{CALPHAD}$ modeling

Thermodynamic properties of the Nd-Bi system were investigated using a combination of experimental measurements, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), data mining and machine learning (DM + ML) predictions, and calculation of phase diagrams (CALPHAD) modeling. The electromotive force (emf) of Nd-Bi alloys in molten LiCl-KCl-NdCl 3 at 773–973 K was measured via coulometric titration of Nd into Bi for the determination of thermochemical properties such as activity coefficients and solubilities of Nd in Bi. A new peritectic reaction of [liquid + NdBi 2 = Nd 3 Bi 7 ] at 774 K was confirmed using differential scanning calorimetry, structural (X-ray diffraction), and microstructural (scanning electron microscopy) analyses. The unknown crystal structure of NdBi2 was suggested to be a mixture of the anti-La 2 Sb configuration and the La 2 Te-type configuration based on ML predictions for over 26,000 data-mined AB 2 -type configurations together with DFT-based verifications. Using the newly acquired experimental data and DFT-based calculations, the thermodynamic description of the Nd-Bi system was remodeled, and a more complete Nd-Bi phase diagram was calculated, including the Nd 3 Bi 7 compound, invariant transition reactions, and liquidus temperatures.

Corrosion behavior in aluminum/galvanized steel resistance spot welds and self-piercing riveting joints in salt spray environment

Here, this paper underlined the corrosion behavior of aluminum alloy/galvanized steel joints fabricated by resistance spot welding (RSW) and self-piercing riveting (SPR) exposed to different salt-spray cycles. It was found that the crevice generated by different joining methods has an important impact on corrosion behavior. Compared with the RSW joint, less corrosion happened on the coupled regions in SPR joints because of the higher local pH value resulted from the smaller crevice. The crevice, however, has less impact on the types of corrosion products. Galvanic corrosion happened in the coupled region for both RSW and SPR joints. The Pourbaix diagram explained the stable corrosion products of Al and Zn—Fe alloy, which are Al 2 O 3 , ZnO, and Fe 3 O 4 . Additional corrosion products observed from the experiment included α-Al(OH) 3 , Ca 4 Al 2 (CO 3 )(OH) 12 (H 2 O) 5 , Zn 5 (OH) 8 Cl 2 (H 2 O), Zn 5 (CO 3 ) 2 (OH) 6 , and Fe 2 (OH) 2 (CO 3 ), which can be understood by considering the metastable corrosion products, Pourbaix diagram, and possible chemical reactions.

Benchmarking GEANT4 and PHITS for 14.8-MeV neutron transport in polyethylene and graphite materials

The feasibility of GEANT4 and PHITS with ENDF/B-VIII.0, JEFF-3.3 and JENDL-4.0 evaluated nuclear data libraries in 14.8-MeV neutron transport simulation are verified by comparing with the MCNP calculations and the experimental data. Here the measured data are from neutron integral experiments including graphite and polyethylene samples. For 6 cm-thick polyethylene and 20 cm-thick graphite samples, the results from GEANT4 and PHITS with three evaluated nuclear data libraries agree well with the MCNP calculations. For a 2 cm-thick graphite sample, the simulated results from GEANT4 and PHITS agree with the MCNP calculations, and they all underestimate the experiment data in below 3 MeV and overestimate them in the energy range of 5–7 MeV. The difference between the simulation results and the experimental data depends on the evaluated nuclear data libraries. In overall, GEANT4 and PHITS are performing reasonable jobs for 14.8-MeV neutron transport simulations.

Modulation of springtime surface sensible heating over the Tibetan Plateau on the interannual variability of East Asian dust cycle

Previous observational evidence and numerical simulations have revealed that the surface sensible heating in spring (March–April–May, MAM) over the Tibetan Plateau (TPSH) can affect the Asian regional hydrological cycle, surface energy balance, and climate through altering atmospheric heat source of the Tibetan Plateau (TP). This study aims to investigate the impacts of MAM TPSH on the interannual variability of East Asian dust cycle by using CAM4-BAM (version 4 of the Community Atmosphere Model coupled to a bulk aerosol model), MERRA-2 (version 2 of the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications) surface dust concentration, and TPSH measurements. Our simulations show that the surface dust concentrations over the East Asian (EA) dust source region and over the northwestern Pacific (NP) in MAM are significantly positively correlated with TPSH, with regionally averaged correlation coefficients of 0.49 for EA and 0.44 for NP. Similar positive correlations are also shown between the MAM TPSH measurements averaged over the 73 observation sites and the surface dust concentration from MERRA-2. Simulation-based comparisons between strongest and weakest TPSH years reveal that, the MAM surface dust concentration in the strongest TPSH years increases with relative differences of 13.1 % over EA and 36.9 % over NP. These corresponding differences are found in MERRA-2 with 22.9 % and 13.3 % over EA and NP, respectively. Further simulated results show that the processes of whole dust cycles (e.g., dust loading, emission, and transport, as well as dust deposition) are also significantly enhanced during the strongest TPSH years over EA and NP. Through enhancing the TP heat source, stronger TPSH in MAM generates an anticyclonic anomaly in middle and upper troposphere over the TP and over the downstream Pacific region, respectively. These atmospheric circulation anomalies induced by the increased TPSH result in increasing the westerly winds over both EA and NP, which in turn increases dust emissions over the dust source, and dust transport over these two regions, as well as the regional dust cycles. These results suggest that addressing the East Asian dust changes in the future climates requires considering not only increasing greenhouse gas emissions but also the variations of the TP's heat source under global warming.
