Superconductivity and topological aspects of two-dimensional transition-metal monohalides

Two-dimensional (2D) superconducting states have attracted much recent interest, especially when they coexist with nontrivial band topology which affords a promising approach towards Majorana fermions. Using first-principles calculations, we predict van der Waals monolayered transition-metal monohalides MX (M = Zr, Mo; X = F, Cl) as a class of 2D superconductors with remarkable transition temperature (5.9–12.4 K). Anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory reveals that ZrCl have a single superconducting gap Δ ~ 2.14 meV, while MoCl is a two-gap superconductor with Δ ~ 1.96 and 1.37 meV. The Z 2 band topology of 2D MX is further demonstrated that MoF and MoCl are candidates for realizing topological superconductivity. Moreover, the Dirac phonons of ZrCl and MoCl contribute w-shape phononic edge states, which are potential for an edge-enhanced electron-phonon coupling. These findings demonstrate that 2D MX offers an attractive platform for exploring the interplay between superconductivity, nontrivial electronic and phononic topology.

High-temperature fractional quantum Hall state in the Floquet kagome flat band

A fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) has been predicted in a topological flat band (FB) by a single-particle band structure combined with phenomenological theory or solution of a many-body lattice Hamiltonian with fuzzy parameters. A long-standing roadblock toward the realization of a FB-FQHE is lacking the many-body solution of specific materials under realistic conditions. Here, we demonstrate a combined study of single-particle Floquet band theory with exact diagonalization (ED) of a many-body Hamiltonian. We show that a time-periodic circularly polarized laser inverts the sign of second-nearest-neighbor hopping in a kagome lattice and enhances spin-orbit coupling in one spin channel to produce a Floquet FB with a high flatness ratio of bandwidth over band gap, as exemplified in monolayer Pt 3 C 36 S 12 H 12 . The ED of the resultant Floquet-kagome lattice Hamiltonian gives a one-third-filling ground state with a laser-dependent excitation gap of a FQH state, up to an estimated temperature above 70 K. Our findings pave the way for exploring the alluding high-temperature FB-FQHE.

Manipulation of Dirac Fermions in Nanochain-Structured Graphene

Graphene has afforded an ideal 2D platform for investigating a rich and fascinating behavior of Dirac fermions. Here, we develop a theoretical mechanism for manipulating the Dirac fermions in graphene, such as from type-I to type-II and type-III, by a top-down nanopatterning approach. We demonstrate that by selective chemical adsorption to pattern the 2D graphene into coupled 1D armchair chains (ACs), the intrinsic isotropic upright Dirac cone becomes anisotropic and strongly tilted. Based on model analyses and first-principles calculations, we show that both the shape and tilt of Dirac cone can be tuned by the species of chemisorption, e.g., halogen vs hydrogen, which modifies the strength of inter-AC coupling. Furthermore, the topological edge states and transport properties of the engineered Dirac fermions are investigated. Our work sheds lights on understanding the Dirac fermions in a nanopatterned graphene platform, and provides guidance for designing nanostructures with novel functionality.
