Extremely Large Response of Phonon Coherence in Twisted Penta‐NiN 2 Bilayer

Abstract Twisting has recently been demonstrated as an effective strategy for tuning the interactions between particles or quasi‐particles in layered materials. Motivated by the recent experimental synthesis of pentagonal NiN 2 sheet [ACS Nano2021, 15, 13539], for the first time, the response of phonon coherence to twisting in bilayer penta‐NiN 2 , going beyond the particle‐like phonon transport is studied. By using the unified theory of phonon transport and high order lattice anharmonicity, together with the self‐consistent phonon theory, it is found that the lattice thermal conductivity is reduced by 80.6% from 33.35 to 6.47 W m −1 K −1 at 300 K when the layers are twisted. In particular, the contribution of phonon coherence is increased sharply by an order of magnitude, from 0.21 to 2.40 W m −1 K −1 , due to the reduced differences between the phonon frequencies and enhanced anharmonicity after the introduction of twist. The work provides a fundamental understanding of the phonon interaction in twisted pentagonal sheets.

Antitumor CD8 T cell responses in glioma patients are effectively suppressed by T follicular regulatory cells

Regulatory T (Treg) cells are thought to contribute to tumor pathogenesis by suppressing tumor immunosurveillance and antitumor immunity. T follicular regulatory (Tfr) cells are a recently characterized Treg subset that expresses both the Treg transcription factor (TF) Foxp3 and the T follicular helper (Tfh) TF Bcl-6. The role of Tfr cells in glioma patients remains unclear. In this study, we found that the level of Tfr cells, identified as Foxp3{sup +}Bcl-6{sup +} CD4 T cells, was significantly elevated in tumor-infiltrating CD4 T cells from resected glioma tumors. Both Tfr cells and Treg cells significantly suppressed the proliferation and the cytotoxic capacity of CD8 T cells toward glioma tumor cells, and the suppression was positively associated with the proportion of Tfr cells and Treg cells, respectively. Tfr and Treg cells from glioma tumor samples demonstrated higher suppression potency than those from healthy blood samples and glioma blood samples. Interestingly, canonical CXCR5{sup -} Treg cells could suppress both CXCR5{sup +} and CXCR5{sup -} CD8 T cells, albeit with stronger potency toward CXCR5{sup -} CD8 T cells. However, Tfr cells presented much higher suppression potency toward CXCR5{sup +} CD8 T cells, whereas CXCR5{sup +} CD8 T cells are a potent CD8 T cell subset previously described to have antiviral and antitumor roles. Overall, these data indicate that Tfr cells are enriched in glioma tumors and have suppressive capacity toward CD8 T cell-mediated effector functions.

Tuning electrical and interfacial thermal properties of bilayer MoS2 via electrochemical intercalation

Layered two-dimensional (2D) materials such as MoS 2 have attracted much attention for nano- and opto-electronics. Recently, intercalation (e.g. of ions, atoms, or molecules) has emerged as an effective technique to modulate material properties of such layered 2D films reversibly. We probe both the electrical and thermal properties of Li-intercalated bilayer MoS 2 nanosheets by combining electrical measurements and Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, we demonstrate reversible modulation of carrier density over more than two orders of magnitude (from 0.8 × 10 12 to 1.5 × 10 14 cm -2 ), and we simultaneously obtain the thermal boundary conductance between the bilayer and its supporting SiO 2 substrate for an intercalated system for the first time. This thermal coupling can be reversibly modulated by nearly a factor of eight, from 14 ± 4.0 MW m -2 K -1 before intercalation to 1.8 ± 0.9 MW m -2 K -1 when the MoS 2 is fully lithiated. These results reveal electrochemical intercalation as a reversible tool to modulate and control both electrical and thermal properties of 2D layers.
