Characterization of polysaccharide from Lonicera japonica Thunb leaves and its application in nano-emulsion

The polysaccharides in honeysuckle leaves (PHL) were separated and characterized for the first time. The nano-emulsion stabilized by PHL and whey protein isolate (WPI) were also fabricated based on the ultrasonic method. The results indicated that PHL was mainly composed of glucose (47.40 mol%), galactose (19.21 mol%) and arabinose (20.21 mol%) with the weight-average molecular weight of 137.97 ± 4.31 kDa. The emulsifier concentration, WPI-to-PHL ratio, ultrasound power and ultrasound time had significant influence on the droplet size of PHL-WPI nano-emulsion. The optimal preparation conditions were determined as following: emulsifier concentration, 1.7%; WPI/PHL ratio, 3:1; ultrasonic power, 700 W; ultrasonic time, 7 min. Under the above conditions, the median diameter of the obtained nano-emulsion was 317.70 ± 5.26 nm, close to the predicted value of 320.20 nm. The protective effect of PHL-WPI emulsion on β-carotene against UV irradiation was superior to that of WPI emulsion. Our results can provide reference for the development of honeysuckle leaves.

Stability of a Mixed–Valence Hydrous Iron–Rich Oxide: Implications for Water Storage and Dynamics in the Deep Lower Mantle

Incorporation of water into mantle compositions can have significant effects on the phase relations in the systems. Here, we synthesized an iron-rich hexagonal hydrous phase (referred to as "HH1-phase") under the high pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions of the deep lower mantle and determined the crystal structure of the HH1-phase at 79 GPa using the multigrain crystallography method. The chemical formula obtained was Fe 12.76 O 18 H x (x ~ to 4.5) in the Fe-O-H system. To demonstrate the role of HH1-phase for water storage in multicomponent systems relevant to mantle compositions, we investigated the stability of HH1-phase in both MgO-rich pyrolitic and SiO 2 -rich basaltic compositions. Our results indicate that the HH1-phase serves as major water storage in a pyrolitic composition, whereas the Al-rich CaCl 2 -type δ-phase and SiO 2 phase are major water storage phases in a SiO 2 -rich basaltic composition. Incorporation of considerable amounts of SiO 2 , MgO, and Al 2 O 3 into the HH1-phase expands its stability field from 98 GPa in the Fe-Al-O-H system to at least 108 GPa (corresponding to similar to 2,400 km depth) in the Mg-Si-Al-Fe-O-H system. Plumes of hot upwelling rock rooted at the base of the lower mantle have been proposed as a possible origin of hotspot volcanoes. The hydrous Fe-rich HH1-phase, if included into the material of upwelling plumes, will decompose on its rising to the upper part of the lower mantle and release water. Our results should provide constraints on water storage in the deep lower mantle and have implications for deep mantle dynamics.

Guest-Controlled Incommensurate Modulation in a Meta-Rigid Metal–Organic Framework Material

Structural transitions of host systems in response to guest binding dominate many chemical processes. We report an unprecedented type of structural flexibility within a meta-rigid material, MFM-520, which exhibits a reversible periodic-to-aperiodic structural transition resulting from a drastic distortion of a [ZnO 4 N] node controlled by the specific host–guest interactions. The aperiodic crystal structure of MFM-520 has no three-dimensional (3D) lattice periodicity but shows translational symmetry in higher-dimensional (3 + 2)D space. In this work, we have directly visualized the aperiodic state which is induced by incommensurate modulation of the periodic framework of MFM-520·H 2 O upon dehydration to give MFM-520. Filling MFM-520 with CO 2 and SO 2 reveals that, while CO 2 has a minimal structural influence, SO 2 can further modulate the structure incommensurately. MFM-520 shows exceptional selectivity for SO 2 under flue-gas desulfurization conditions, and the facile release of captured SO 2 from MFM-520 enabled the conversion to valuable sulfonamide products. MFM-520 can thus be used as a highly efficient capture and delivery system for SO 2 .

An intriguing intermediate state as a bridge between antiferroelectric and ferroelectric perovskites

The configuration of electric or magnetic dipoles embedded into a crystal lattice gives rise to the defining physical properties of a functional material. The prevailing antiferroelectric materials have so far been allusively assumed to be in a strict antiparallel electric polarization configuration, although they have shown huge potential applications for use in electronic devices. Herein, we have revealed for the first time the complex crystal structure of an intermediate state between the two conventional antiferroelectric (AFE) and ferroelectric (FE) states in PbZrO 3 -based perovskites by employing a combination of advanced synchrotron X-ray, neutron and three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction techniques. We found that the intermediate state displays an intriguing flexible configuration of a sinusoidal wave functional with imbalanced polarization, different to the commonly believed antiparallel and balanced polarization. Such an intermediate state was concluded to act as a bridge between the conventional AFE and FE states. Our observations offer new insight into the AFE state and its transformation into the FE state. Such an intermediate state with a unique polarization configuration is believed to be a common feature that occurs in high-performance AFE perovskite materials.
