High voltage stable cycling of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries enabled by top-down direct fluorinated poly (ethylene oxide)-based electrolytes

Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) show prospects in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries. However, they suffer from low ionic conductivity at room temperature and interfacial instability with high voltage cathodes for long-term cycling. In this work, top-down fluorinated PEOs (F-PEOs) for the all-solid-state electrolytes, which are scalable and cost-effective, are developed to improve the battery performance. We demonstrate, that by enhancing the disordering of the F-PEO matrix, the SPE achieves a maximum Li + conductivity of 1.1 x 10 -4 S cm -1 at 40 °C, which is 20 times higher than the baseline. By forming robust cathode/SPE and Li/SPE interfaces, the F-PEO-based SPEs demonstrate stable cycling in the LiFePO 4 /Li and LiNi 0·8 Mn 0·1 Co 0·1 O 2 /Li (3-4.4 V, 500 cycles, capacity retention of 91.6%) based all-solid-state batteries at 40 °C. Therefore, our work highlights the significance of "disordering engineering" for energy storage materials.

Modeling methane dynamics in three wetlands in Northeastern China by using the CLM-Microbe model

Wetlands account for up to 70% of the natural source of methane (CH 4 ) in terrestrial ecosystems on a global scale. Soil microbes are the ultimate producers and biological consumers of CH 4 in wetlands. Therefore, simulating microbial mechanisms of CH 4 production and consumptionwould improve the predictability of CH 4 flux in wetland ecosystems. In this study, we applied a microbial-explicit model, the CLM-Microbe, to simulate CH 4 flux in three major natural wetlands in northeastern China. The CLM-Microbe model was able to capture the seasonal variation of gross primary productivity (GPP), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and CH 4 flux. The CLM-Microbe model explained more than 40% of the variation in GPP and CH 4 flux across sites. Marsh wetlands had higher CH 4 flux than mountain peatlands. Ebullition dominated the CH 4 transport pathway in all three wetlands. The methanogenesis dominates while methanotroph makes a minor contribution to the CH 4 flux, making all wetlands a CH 4 source. Sensitivity analysis indicated that microbial growth and death rates are the key factors governing CH 4 emission and vegetation physiological properties (flnr) and maintenance respiration predominate GPP variation. Explicitly simulating microbial processes allows genomic information to be incorporated, laying a foundation for better predicting CH 4 dynamics under the changing environment.

Corrosion of rebar in concrete. Part IV. On the theoretical basis of the chloride threshold

A theory is developed for calculating the chloride threshold (CT) from the Point Defect Model (PDM). CT is defined as the ratio [Cl - ]/[OH - ] at which the passivity breakdown voltage (E b ) equals the corrosion potential, ECP. CT is sensitive to the T, ECP, pH, and E b , because all four appear in the exponent X in CT = 10 X . Small uncertainties in these parameters translate into a large uncertainty in CT, emphasizing the need for accurate T, ECP, pH, and E b data. We demonstrate the theory by successfully calculating CT using data for selected systems.
