Construction of MoS 2 /NiS 2 heterostructure with fast interfacial reaction kinetics for ultrafast sodium storage

Constructing heterostructure is a valid method to reinforcing sodium storage performance of transition metal chalcogenides materials. Herein, a simple, safe and controllable one step hydrothermal method is proposed to synthesize MoS 2 /NiS 2 heterostructure. Due to the difference in band gaps and work functions of MoS 2 and NiS 2 , the charges are redistributed at the MoS 2 /NiS 2 heterointerfaces, thereby accelerating the migration of electrons and Na + . The heterointerfaces provide extra active sites for storing Na + , thus increasing the sodium storage capacity of the heterostructure. Furthermore, the distinct redox potentials of NiS 2 and MoS 2 promote the structural stability of MoS 2 /NiS 2 heterostructure during the electrochemical reaction processes. Consequently, the obtained MoS 2 /NiS 2 heterostructure exhibits superior rate properties (339.4 mAh g –1 at 10 A g –1 ) and ultra-stable cycling stability (480.5 mAh g –1 after 350 cycles at 1 A g –1 ). Finally, this paper presents a valid strategy for creating heterostructure anodes with excellent sodium storage properties.

Electron Configuration Modulation Induced Stabilized 1T-MoS 2 for Enhanced Sodium Ion Storage

1T-MoS 2 has become an ideal anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the metastable feature of 1T-MoS 2 makes it difficult to directly synthesize under normal conditions. In addition, it easily transforms into 2H phase via restacking, resulting in inferior electrochemical performance. Here, the electron configuration of Mo 4d orbitals is modulated and the stable 1T-MoS 2 is constructed by nickel (Ni) introduction (1T-Ni-MoS 2 ). The original electron configuration of Mo 4d orbitals is changed via the electron injection by Ni, which triggers the phase transition from 2H to 1T phase, thus improving the electrical conductivity and accelerating the redox kinetics of the material. Consequently, 1T-Ni-MoS 2 exhibits superior rate capability (266.8 mAh g -1 at 10 A g -1 ) and excellent cycle life (358.7 mAh g -1 at 1 A g -1 after 350 cycles). In addition, the assembled Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C||1T-Ni-MoS 2 full cells deliver excellent electrochemical properties and show great prospects in energy storage devices.

Solvation sheath reorganization enables divalent metal batteries with fast interfacial charge transfer kinetics

Efficient, rechargeable Mg and Ca batteries Divalent rechargeable metal batteries such as those based on magnesium and calcium are of interest because of the abundance of these elements and their lower tendency to form dendrites, but practical demonstrations are lacking. Hou et al . used methoxyethyl amine chelants in which the ligands attach to the metal atom in more than one place, modulating the solvation structure of the metal ions to enable a facile charge-transfer reaction (see the Perspective by Zuo and Yin). In full battery cells, these components lead to high efficiency and energy density. Theoretical calculations were used to understand the solvation structures. —MSL

Water-Pillared Sodium Vanadium Bronze Nanowires for Enhanced Rechargeable Magnesium Ion Storage

Owing to the advantages of high safety, low cost, high theoretical volumetric capacities, and environmental friendliness, magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) have more feasibility for large-scale energy storage compared to lithium-ion batteries. However, lack of suitable cathode materials due to sluggish kinetics of magnesium ion is one of the biggest challenges. Herein, water-pillared sodium vanadium bronze nanowires (Na 2 V 6 O 16 ·1.63H 2 O) are reported as cathode material for MIBs, which display high performance in magnesium storage. The hydrated sodium ions provide excellent structural stability. The charge shielding effect of lattice water enables fast Mg 2+ diffusion. It exhibits high specific capacity of 175 mAh g -1 , long cycle life (450 cycles), and high coulombic efficiency (≈100%). At high current density of 200 mA g -1 , the capacity retention is up to 71% even after 450 cycles (compared to the highest capacity), demonstrating excellent long-term cycling performance. The nature of charge storage kinetics is explored. Furthermore, a highly reversible structure change during the electrochemical process is proved by comprehensive electrochemical analysis. The remarkable electrochemical performance makes Na 2 V 6 O 16 ·1.63H 2 O a promising cathode material for low-cost and safe MIBs.

A Covalent Organic Framework for Fast-Charge and Durable Rechargeable Mg Storage

High safety, low cost and high volumetric capacity rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are promising alternatives to lithium ion batteries. However, lack of high power, high energy and stable cathodes for RMBs hinders their commercialization. Herein, an environmentally benign, low cost and sustainable covalent organic framework (COF) cathode for Mg storage is reported for the first time. It delivers a high power density of 2.8 kW kg -1 , a high specific energy density of 146 Wh kg -1 , and ultra-long cycle life of 3000 cycles with very slow capacity decay rate of 0.0196% per cycle, representing one of the best cathodes to date. The comprehensive electrochemical analysis proves that triazine ring sites in COF are redox centers for reversible reaction with magnesium ions, and the ultra-fast reaction kinetic is mainly attributed to pseudocapacitive behavior. The high-rate Mg storage of COF offers new opportunities for the development of ultra-stable and fast charge RMBs.
