Boosted piezoelectricity with excellent thermal stability in tetragonal NaNbO 3 -based ceramics

The realization of high piezoelectric performance and excellent temperature stability simultaneously in Pb-free ceramics is the key for replacing Pb-containing perovskites in the industry. In this study, large piezoelectric performance (d 33 = 354 pC N –1 ) was achieved in a wide temperature sinterable potassium-free NaNbO 3 –BaTiO 3 –BaSnO 3 system, which is twice more than the piezoelectricity found in NaNbO 3 –BaTiO 3 binary ceramics. Structural refinement of high-energy synchrotron powder diffraction data suggests a single tetragonal structure with P4bm symmetry for the studied NaNbO 3 -based Pb-free ceramic. The results indicate that the small axial ratio favoring polarization reorientation benefits strong piezoelectricity, while the large oxygen octahedron tilt enhances the stability of the P4bm structure during the changing temperature according to the in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements and provides the foundation for the excellent thermal stability (20–100 °C) of the piezoelectric properties. Furthermore, a single tetragonal phase with a tiny axial ratio and large oxygen octahedron tilt effectively balances the piezoelectricity and thermal stability in Pb-free systems.

Structural origin of size effect on piezoelectric performance of Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3

Grain size effect plays a vital role in piezoelectric performance from both scientific and technological view. However, the underlying structural mechanism related to grain size is still unclear. In the present study, the structural mechanism of grain size effect on piezoelectric performance has been revealed in the prototype Pb(Zr, Ti)O 3 system by using in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The miniaturization of grain size tends to favor the appearance of higher symmetric tetragonal phase, while a single monoclinic phase is determined in the coarse-grained ceramics. The direct structural evidence reveals that both tetragonal and monoclinic phases in the fine-grained ceramics are less sensitive to the electric field, corresponding to the inferior piezoelectric performance, while the single monoclinic phase in the coarse-grained ceramics is more active to be driven by the electric field, generating good piezoelectric behavior. Both domain switching ability and lattice strain are suppressed with decreasing grain size, which directly leads to the deterioration in piezoelectric performance. In conclusion, the current results will benefit the structural understanding of the size effect of piezoelectric and other related systems.

Structure and good piezoelectric performance in the complex system of Pb[(Zn,Ni)Nb]O 3 –Pb[(In,Yb)Nb]O 3 –Pb(Zr,Hf,Ti)O 3

High-performance piezoelectrics are always demanded for the high-end application. In this study, a complex piezoelectric system of 0.49Pb(Zn 1/2 Ni 1/2 ) 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 – x Pb(In 1/2 Yb 1/2 ) 1/2 Nb 1/2 O 3 –(0.51 – x )Pb(Zr 1/2 Hf 1/2 ) 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (0.16 ≤ x ≤ 0.23) was fabricated through the solid-state method. The structure, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and dielectric properties were investigated. The optimum piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 761 pC/N, high Curie temperature of 169 °C, dielectric permittivity ( ε r ) of 4557, and electromechanical coupling coefficient ( k p ) of 63% were found at the morphotropic phase boundary composition of x = 0.19, which are superior to other complex piezoelectric materials. In particular, a significant large-signal d 33 * of 913 pm/V and low strain hysteresis (6%) was obtained in the temperature range of 20–170 °C. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) has demonstrated that good temperature stability is put down to the structure stability. The agreement between the calculated lattice strain from in situ high-energy synchrotron XRD data and the macroscopic measurements suggests that the large lattice strain has a dominant contribution to the high piezoelectric response. The high piezoelectric performance and good temperature stability makes it potential for application.

An intriguing intermediate state as a bridge between antiferroelectric and ferroelectric perovskites

The configuration of electric or magnetic dipoles embedded into a crystal lattice gives rise to the defining physical properties of a functional material. The prevailing antiferroelectric materials have so far been allusively assumed to be in a strict antiparallel electric polarization configuration, although they have shown huge potential applications for use in electronic devices. Herein, we have revealed for the first time the complex crystal structure of an intermediate state between the two conventional antiferroelectric (AFE) and ferroelectric (FE) states in PbZrO 3 -based perovskites by employing a combination of advanced synchrotron X-ray, neutron and three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction techniques. We found that the intermediate state displays an intriguing flexible configuration of a sinusoidal wave functional with imbalanced polarization, different to the commonly believed antiparallel and balanced polarization. Such an intermediate state was concluded to act as a bridge between the conventional AFE and FE states. Our observations offer new insight into the AFE state and its transformation into the FE state. Such an intermediate state with a unique polarization configuration is believed to be a common feature that occurs in high-performance AFE perovskite materials.

A Novel NASICON‐Type Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 Demonstrating the Energy Density Record of Phosphate Cathodes for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted incremental attention as a promising candidate for grid‐scale energy‐storage applications. To meet practical requirements, searching for new cathode materials with high energy density is of great importance. Herein, a novel Na superionic conductor (NASICON)‐type Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 is developed as a high‐energy cathode for SIBs. The Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 nanoparticles homogeneously embedded in a carbon matrix can present an extraordinary reversible capacity of 160.5 mA h g −1 with three‐electron reaction at ≈3.53 V during the Na + extraction/insertion process, realizing an unprecedentedly high energy density of 566.5 Wh kg −1 in the phosphate cathodes for SIBs. It is intriguing to reveal the underlying mechanism of the unique Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ , Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ , and Cr 3+ /Cr 4+ redox couples via X‐ray absorption near‐edge structure spectroscopy. The whole electrochemical reaction undergoes highly reversible single‐phase and biphasic transitions with a moderate volume change of 7.7% through in situ X‐ray diffraction and ex situ high‐energy synchrotron X‐ray diffraction. Combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, the superior performance is ascribed to the low ionic‐migration energy barrier and desirable Na‐ion diffusion kinetics. The present work can offer a new insight into the design of multielectron‐reaction cathode materials for SIBs.
