A Comparative Study on Artificial Neural Network, Phenomenological-Based Constitutive and Modified Fields–Backofen Models to Predict Flow Stress in Ti-4Al-3V-2Mo-2Fe Alloy

The flow curve was obtained from the superplastic tensile tests in the temperature range of 1033-1153 K and strain rate range of 0.001-0.1 s{sup −1}. Results showed that strain hardening (SH) was insensitive to deformation parameter variation but with the nature of material, while stable state (SS) and dynamic softening (DS) were significantly associated with a thermal activated process. The occurrence of secondary hardening and softening was attributed to discontinuous dynamic recrystallization. And the generation of necklace microstructure at grain boundaries was caused by bulging. Based on the experimental data, the artificial neural network (ANN), phenomenological-based constitutive (PBC) and modified Fields–Backofen (MFB) models were developed, and their predictability and adaptability for the description of the flow behavior during hot processing were evaluated by analyzing the employed standard statistical parameters. Comparatively, ANN model is capable of tracing the complex flow behavior including SH, SS and DS substages. Concerning PBC model, it can not only predict flow stress with satisfactory accuracy, but also represent the flow trend with the larger strain. MFB model adapts well to the flow curve with a broad SH region without DS effect.

An Online Plug-and-Play Algorithm for Regularized Image Reconstruction

Plug-and-play priors (PnP) is a powerful framework for regularizing imaging inverse problems by using advanced denoisers within an iterative algorithm. Recent experimental evidence suggests that PnP algorithms achieve state-of-the-art performance in a range of imaging applications. Here, we introduce a new online PnP algorithm based on the proximal gradient method (PGM). The proposed algorithm uses only a subset of measurements at every iteration, which makes it scalable to very large datasets. We present a new theoretical convergence analysis, for both batch and online variants of PnP-PGM, for denoisers that do not necessarily correspond to proximal operators. We also present simulations illustrating the applicability of the algorithm to image reconstruction in diffraction tomography. Finally, the results in this paper have the potential to expand the applicability of the PnP framework to very large datasets.

Tunable Thermal Expansion from Negative, Zero, to Positive in Cubic Prussian Blue Analogues of GaFe(CN) 6

The control of thermal expansion of open framework Prussian blue analogues is vital but remains challenging. The present work proposes an effective method to control the thermal expansion, in which guest ions (Na + ) and molecules (H 2 O) can adjust the coeffecient of thermal expansion from strong negative, to near zero, to positive in GaFe(CN) 6 Prussian blue analogues. Direct experimental evidence by high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption fine structure shows that the guest ions or molecules have intense dampening effect on the transverse vibrations of -Ga–N≡C–Fe– linkage responsible for NTE, especially for N atoms. The role of guests in controlling thermal expansion is attributed to the strong interaction of local environment – steric dampening. Furthermore, the present study demonstrates that electrochemical or redox intercalation of guest ions can be a general and effective method for controlling thermal expansion for those open framework materials with negative thermal expansion driven by low Frequency phonons.

Investigation on Cracking Behavior and Development of a Fracture Model of Ti-47Al-2Nb-2Cr Alloy During Hot Deformation

When alloys are strained to a certain limit under the plastic deformation, ductile fracture occurs. Whether the required deformation can be put into effect before fracture appears has become a serious concern. A combination of compression tests, ductile fracture criteria as well as finite element simulation (FEM) were employed in this study to establish the fracture initiation prediction model of Ti-47Al-2Nb-2Cr alloy. To obtain the critical fracture strain, a technique was proposed to calculate the data for deformed cylindrical samples through isothermal compression tests in the temperature range between 1223 and 1423 K with strain rates ranging from 0.001 to 1 s{sup −1}. Five commonly used ductile fracture criteria were compared by FE simulation of compressing tests. It was found that the Brozzo criterion was found to be suitable and accordingly a failure criterion, considering temperature and strain ratio was established. Hot working parameters (critical fracture value and critical strain) in deformation could be obtained through the finite element simulation, revealing that this newly established failure criterion could accurately predict cracking initiation in compressing deformation of Ti-47Al-2Nb-2Cr alloy ingot.

Extracellular ATP inhibits root gravitropism at concentrations that inhibit polar auxin transport

Raising the level of extracellular ATP to mM concentrations similar to those found inside cells can block gravitropism of Arabidopsis roots. When plants are grown in Murashige and Skoog medium supplied with 1 mM ATP, their roots grow horizontally instead of growing straight down. Medium with 2 mM ATP induces root curling, and 3 mM ATP stimulates lateral root growth. When plants are transferred to medium containing exogenous ATP, the gravity response is reduced or in some cases completely blocked by ATP. Equivalent concentrations of ADP or inorganic phosphate have slight but usually statistically insignificant effects, suggesting the specificity of ATP in these responses. The ATP effects may be attributable to the disturbance of auxin distribution in roots by exogenously applied ATP, because extracellular ATP can alter the pattern of auxin-induced gene expression in DR5-beta-glucuronidase transgenic plants and increase the response sensitivity of plant roots to exogenously added auxin. The presence of extracellular ATP also decreases basipetal auxin transport in a dose-dependent fashion in both maize (Zea mays) and Arabidopsis roots and increases the retention of [(3)H]indole-3-acetic acid in root tips of maize. Taken together, these results suggest that the inhibitory effects of extracellular ATP on auxin distribution may happen at the level of auxin export. The potential role of the trans-plasma membrane ATP gradient in auxin export and plant root gravitropism is discussed.
