Model-reference adaptive control system design technique

This paper considers the model-reference adaptive control problem which has received considerable attention in the literature in the last few years. An adaptive control scheme is proposed which has terms in the Liapunov function used in the design procedure which are not included in previously proposed schemes. The relationship of this new scheme to existing schemes is shown by considering the root-loci of the linearized error equations between plant and model. Finally, a second order example is given which illustrates the difference between the two previously proposed model-reference adaptive methods and the one proposed in this paper.

Design of model-reference adaptive control systems using Liapunov functions.

This paper considers the design of model-reference adaptive control systems using Liapunov functions. An adaption rule is developed analytically. This adaption rule results from the use of a Liapunov function which contains several positive semidefinite terms not included in previous references. The inclusion of these terms results in an adaption rule which is a function of the error, the plant states and the derivative and integral of these quantities. The adaption rule is applied to a simplified model of the Space Shuttle vehicle. Simulation results show that the maximum response error in the system is reduced by using this adaption rule.

Attitude control of an orbiting space vehicle.

Study of the normal and clamped modes of operation and dynamic response characteristics of the gimbaled control moment gyro (CMG) designed to fulfill the stringent pointing requirements of the Skylab telescope mount when the spacecraft is under the influence of both external and internal torques. The results indicate that the clamped mode of operation provides a feasible approach for significantly improving the system characteristics.
