Third data release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program

This work presents the third data release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP), a wide-field multi-band imaging survey with the Subaru 8.2 m telescope. HSC-SSP has three survey layers (Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep) with different area coverages and depths, designed to address a wide array of astrophysical questions. This third release from HSC-SSP includes data from 278 nights of observing time and covers about 670 deg 2 in all five broad-band filters (grizy) at the full depth (~26 mag at 5σ depending on filter) in the Wide layer. If we include partially observed areas, the release covers 1470 deg 2 . The Deep and UltraDeep layers have ~80% of the originally planned integration times, and are considered done, as we have slightly changed the observing strategy in order to compensate for various time losses. There are a number of updates in the image processing pipeline. Of particular importance is the change in the sky subtraction algorithm; we subtract the sky on small scales before the detection and measurement stages, which has significantly reduced the number of false detections. Thanks to this and other updates, the overall quality of the processed data has improved since the previous release. However, there are limitations in the data (for example, the pipeline is not optimized for crowded fields), and we encourage the user to check the quality assurance plots as well as a list of known issues before exploiting the data. On the Spin-Orbit Misalignment of the XO-3 Exoplanetary System

We presented photometric and spectroscopic observations of the 2009 February 2 transit of the exoplanet XO-3b. The new data showed that the planetary orbital axis and stellar rotation axis are misaligned, as reported earlier by Hebrard and coworkers. XO-3b was the first exoplanet known to have a highly inclined orbit relative to the equatorial plane of its parent star, and as such it may fulfill the predictions of some scenarios for the migration of massive planets into close-in orbits.

Statistics of the cosmic Mach number from numerical simulations of a cold dark matter universe

Results are presented of an analysis of the cosmic Mach number, M, the ratio of the streaming velocity, v, to the random velocity dispersion, sigma, of galaxies in a given patch of the universe, which was performed on the basis of hydrodynamical simulations of the cold dark matter scenario. Galaxy formation is modeled by application of detailed physical processes rather than by the ad hoc assumption of 'bias' between dark matter and galaxy fluctuations. The correlation between M and sigma is found to be very weak for both components. No evidence is found for a physical 'velocity bias' in the quantities which appear in the definition of M. Standard cold-dark-matter-dominated universes are in conflict, at a statistically significant level, with the available observation, in that they predict a Mach number considerably lower than is observed.

Baryon isocurvature scenario in inflationary cosmology - A particle physics model and its astrophysical implications

A phenomenological model to produce isocurvature baryon-number fluctuations is proposed in the framework of inflationary cosmology. The resulting spectrum of density fluctuation is very different from the conventional Harrison-Zel'dovich shape. The model, with the parameters satisfying several requirements from particle physics and cosmology, provides an appropriate initial condition for the minimal baryon isocurvature scenario of galaxy formation discussed by Peebles.

Probes of large-scale structure in the universe

A general formalism is developed which shows that the gravitational instability theory for the origin of the large-scale structure of the universe is now capable of critically confronting observational results on cosmic background radiation angular anisotropies, large-scale bulk motions, and large-scale clumpiness in the galaxy counts. The results indicate that presently advocated cosmological models will have considerable difficulty in simultaneously explaining the observational results.

Self-similar dynamics of polytropic gaseous spheres

The fundamental equations governing the self-similar dynamics of 'polytropic' gaseous spheres are derived, and the asymptotic solutions are given. The solutions divide into cases with and without 'critical points' in closed analogy with the solar wind solutions of Holzer and Axford (1970). Properties for solutions with critical points are discussed, and their behavior around the critical point is derived explicitly for n = 1. Numerical examples of self-similar solutions for n = 1 and n = 2 - gamma are presented, and the properties of the solutions are discussed.
