Newest 3-Flavor Neutrino Oscillation Results from NOvA

NOvA is a long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment based at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory observing the appearance of electron (anti)neutrinos and disappearance of muon (anti) neutrinos. The experiment consists of two functionally identical liquid scintillator detectors; a 14 kton Far Detector is situated 810 km from the beam source, while a smaller Near Detector is only 1 km from the source and samples initial beam composition consisting of primarily muon (anti)neutrinos. Through these observations NOvA is probing outstanding questions in neutrino physics including the neutrino mass ordering and leptonic CP violation along with the θ23 neutrino mixing angle and the larger neutrino mass splitting Δm232. This talk will present the most recent neutrino oscillation results, which include a larger dataset, new analysis techniques, and updated systematic uncertainties.

Method for making substituted furan compound embodiments and derivatives thereof

Disclosed herein are embodiments of a method for making substituted furan compounds using bioderived coupling partners and a heterogeneous catalyst. In particular disclosed embodiments, the method comprises coupling a furan compound with the coupling partner (e.g., an aliphatic or heteroaliphatic coupling partner) in the presence of the heterogeneous catalyst to provide the substituted furan compound.

Method for conversion of diols to olefin products

A method for converting a diol in solution to an olefin fraction, the method comprising: (i) reacting a diol of the formula HO—R—OH in solution with a carbonyl-containing molecule of the formula: in the presence of an acid catalyst to result in a dioxolane molecule of the formula: wherein R is a hydrocarbon linker containing 1-12 carbon atoms, and R 1 and R 2 are independently selected from hydrogen atom and hydrocarbon groups containing 1-12 carbon atoms, wherein R 1 and R 2 optionally interconnect; (ii) removing the dioxolane molecule from the solution by phase separation; and (iii) contacting the dioxolane molecule with a metal-loaded zeolite at a temperature of 100-500° C. to convert the dioxolane molecule to an olefin fraction.

Latest Results from the NOvA Experiment

NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino experiment placed in the muon neutrino-dominated NuMI beam based at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, USA. Utilizing two functionally-identical tracking calorimeters, NOvA observes the appearance of electron neutrinos and the disappearance of muon neutrinos. By observing these neutrino oscillations along with their antineutrino counterparts, NOvA is probing outstanding questions in neutrino physics including the neutrino mass ordering, leptonic CP violation parameterized by the phase $\delta_{CP}$, the larger neutrino mass splitting $\Delta m^2_{32}$, and the mixing angle $\theta_{23}$. Alongside standard 3-flavor oscillations, NOvA is also investigating sterile neutrinos, nonstandard oscillations, and performing neutrino cross-section measurements. This talk will present the most recent results from NOvA encompassing the latest analyses.

ANNIE: the Accelerator Neutrino Neutron Interaction Experiment

The Accelerator Neutrino Neutron Interaction Experiment (ANNIE) is a Gadolinium-loaded water Cherenkov detector placed in the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, USA. The primary physics goal of ANNIE is to perform neutrino cross-section measurements that will constrain systematic uncertainties in the next generation of long-baseline neutrino experiments. The first measurement will be the multiplicity of final-state neutrons from neutrino-nucleus interactions in water. Alongside these measurements, ANNIE has achieved the first ever deployments of two novel detector technologies in a neutrino beam: Large Area Picosecond Photodetectors (LAPPDs) and Water-based Liquid Scintillator (WbLS). LAPPDs are micro-channel-plate-based devices that provide timing resolution of ~100 picoseconds and sub-centimeter spatial resolution. WbLS combines the low attenuation and Cherenkov production of pure water with the high light-yield and low detection threshold of liquid scintillator. This talk will discuss the status of ANNIE's physics and R&D measurements.

Processes for the preparation of alkyl furans using bifunctional copper catalysts

The present disclosure relates to the selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of bio-based furanic ketones with a bifunctional copper-based catalyst in the presence of a solvent to prepare alkyl furans with high yield, purity, and scalability. The alkyl furans prepared herein are useful in the preparation of surfactants.
