Ion resonances and ELF wave production by an electron beam injected into the ionosphere - ECHO 6

Two effects observed with electron antennas ejected from a sounding rocket launched into the ionosphere in March 1983 carrying electron beam guns are discussed. The sensor packages were ejected and travelled parallel to the vehicle trajectory. Electric potentials were measured between the single probes and a plasma diagnostic package while the gun injected electrons into the ionosphere in perpendicular and parallel 1 kHz directions. Signal pulses over the dc-1250 kHz range were detected. A kHz gun frequency caused a signal that decreased by two orders of magnitude between 45-90 m from the beam field line. However, the signal was detectable at 1 mV/m at 120 m, supporting earlier data that indicated that pulsed electron beams can cause ELF waves in space. Beam injection parallel to the magnetic field produced an 840 Hz resonance that could be quenched by activation of a transverse beam.

Flight and ground tests of a GOES satellite time receiver for satellite communications applications

A satellite time receiver was tested in various environmental conditions during the past year. The commercial receiver designed to work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES). The test program included operation at low elevation during flight in a military cargo aircraft and long term comparison with laboratory standards. The GOES satellite time receiver offers an opportunity to provide easy wide area coverage synchronization at low cost.

A study of magnetosphere dynamics during auroral electrojet events by observations of energetic electron intensity changes at synchronous orbit

The central theme of the considered investigation is the surprising detailed correlation between dynamical changes in electron directional intensity measurements at synchronous orbit and the auroral electrojet currents in the polar ionosphere. The statistical study reported has been carried out following the discovery by Erickson and Winckler (1973) of a close relationship between the time profiles of auroral electrojet intensifications and electron intensity decreases observed in the pre-midnight sector at synchronous orbit. The electron data used in the study were obtained during 1967 and 1968 by the University of Minnesota magnetic spectrometer carried onboard ATSl.

ATS-6 - Synchronous orbit trapped radiation studies with an electron-proton spectrometer

The paper discusses the University of Minnesota experiment on ATS-6 designed to study the origin and dynamics of high-energy electrons and protons in the outer radiation belt and in the near-earth plasma sheet. The experiment consists of two nearly identical detector assemblies, each of which is a magnetic spectrometer containing four gold-silicon surface barrier detectors. The instrument provides a clean separation between protons and electrons by the combination of pulse height analysis and magnetic deflection.

Data retrieval system provides unlimited hardware design information

Data is input to magnetic tape on a single format card that specifies the system, location, and component, the test point identification number, the operators initial, the date, a data code, and the data itself. This method is efficient for large volume data storage and retrieval, and permits output variations without continuous program modifications.
