Nonexistence of integrable nonlinear magnetic fields with invariants quadratic in momenta

Nonlinear, completely integrable Hamiltonian systems that serve as blueprints for novel particle accelerators at the intensity frontier are promising avenues for research, as Fermilab’s Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) example clearly illustrates. Here, we show that only very limited generalizations are possible when no approximations in the underlying Hamiltonian or Maxwell equations are allowed, as was the case for IOTA. Specifically, no such systems exist with invariants quadratic in the momenta, precluding straightforward generalization of the Courant-Snyder theory of linear integrable systems in beam physics. We also conjecture that no such systems exist with invariants of higher degree in the momenta. This leaves solenoidal magnetic fields, including their nonlinear fringe fields, as the only completely integrable static magnetic fields, albeit with invariants that are linear in the momenta. The difficulties come from enforcing Maxwell equations; without constraints, we show that there are many solutions. In particular, we discover a previously unknown large family of integrable Hamiltonians.

Smart Pixels: towards on-sensor inference of charged particle track parameters and uncertainties

The combinatorics of track seeding has long been a computational bottleneck for triggering and offline computing in High Energy Physics (HEP), and remains so for the HL-LHC. Next-generation pixel sensors will be sufficiently fine-grained to determine angular information of the charged particle passing through from pixel-cluster properties. This detector technology immediately improves the situation for offline tracking, but any major improvements in physics reach are unrealized since they are dominated by lowest-level hardware trigger acceptance. We will demonstrate track angle and hit position prediction, including errors, using a mixture density network within a single layer of silicon as well as the progress towards and status of implementing the neural network in hardware on both FPGAs and ASICs.

Diagnostic application of highly ionized iron lines in the XUV spectrum of a solar flare

Recent atomic data have been used to analyze a solar flare spectrum obtained with the Goddard Space Flight Center's grating spectrometer on the OSO-5 satellite. There exist in the wavelength region 90-200 A strong lines from each of the ions Fe XVIII-Fe XXIV. The Fe XXI lines can be used as an electron density diagnostic for the 10 to the 7th K plasma. From an analysis of a particular flare, a steep positive slope in the emission measure between 10 to the 6.5th and 10 to the 7.2th K and an electron density of about 4 x 10 to the 11th per cu cm at 10 to the 7th K is found. The need is emphasized for high spectral and spatial resolution observations of solar flares in this wavelength region, which has to date been largely neglected.

Observation of possible Fe XVII 2p5 3p/1S0/ - 2p5 3s/1P1, 3P1/ transitions in spectra of a solar active region and flare

Expected wavelengths and relative intensities are obtained from previous calculations for the hitherto unobserved transitions 2p5 3p(1SO) - 2p5 3s(1P1, 3P1) in Fe XVII. A candidate pair of lines at 197.05 A and 242.09 A was found in laboratory spectra and appears to be present in the spectra of a solar active region observed by the OSO-7 Goddard spectroheliograph as well as in the spectrum of a Skylab-observed solar flare.

Solar-flare emission lines in the range from 66 to 171 A; 2sr 2pk - 2s/r-1/ 2p/k+1/ transitions in highly ionized iron

New emission lines found in several flare spectra obtained with the Goddard grating spectrometer on the OSO-5 satellite, in 1969, have been listed by wavelength and relative intensity. These new lines, including several as strong as normal quiet-sun lines, are extremely variable in intensity and have been assigned mainly to transitions of the type 2sr 2pk - 2s(r-1) 2p(k+1) in iron ions up to Fe XXIII.

On helium-like 1s2l-1snl prime transitions in solar flare spectra

Expected wavelengths and intensities are computed for 1s2l-1snl prime transitions in helium-like ions of the abundant elements from oxygen to iron under coronal conditions. Probable observations of some of these lines in the spectra of solar flares are discussed, and attention is called to a possible reversal of singlet and triplet intensities as compared to laboratory observations.
