A 75 Watt, 59 to 64 Ghz Space TWT

The design and performance of a high efficiency 70 Watt, 59 to 64 GHz traveling-wave tube (TWT) is described. This intersatellite communications TWT, designated the Hughes Aircraft Company Model 961HA, employs a coupled-cavity slow-wave structure with a two-step velocity taper and a four-stage isotropic graphite multistage depressed collector (MDC). This TWT achieved outstanding beam transmission, 96% with RF. This is the highest power and widest bandwidth device of this type. The tube has 45 dB of gain and 30% efficiency. This TWT is conduction cooled and weighs 13 lbs.

A high-efficiency 59- to 64-GHz TWT for intersatellite communications

The design of a 75-W, 59- to 64- GHz TWT with a predicted overall efficiency in excess of 40 percent is described. This intersatellite communications TWT, designated Model 961HA, employs a coupled-cavity slow-wave structure with a two-step velocity taper and an isotropic graphite multistage depressed collector (MDC). Because the RF efficiency of this TWT is less than 8 percent, an MDC design providing a very high collector efficiency was necessary to achieve the overall efficiency goal of 40 percent.

A high-efficiency ferruleless coupled-cavity traveling-wave tube with phase-adjusted taper

The design and performance of the first traveling-wave tube (TWT) to be built with a phase-adjusted taper (PAT) is discussed. By adjusting the phase of the electron bunch with respect to the RF wave for strong electron bunch formation at the beginning of the taper and strong power conversion at the end, the PAT achieves a high efficiency of power conversion from the electron beam to the RF wave. A PAT incorporated into the output section of a baseline 29-30 GHz ferruleless coupled-cavity TWT experimentally increased the peak RF power from 420 to 1000 W and the peak RF interaction efficiency from 9.6 to 22.6 percent.

Improved Traveling-Wave Tube

New space traveling-wave tube (TWT) provides coherent source of 75 watts of continuous-wave power output over bandwidth of 5 GHz at frequency of 65 GHz. Coupled-cavity TWT provides 50 dB of saturated gain. Includes thermionic emitter, M-type dispenser cathode providing high-power electron beam. Beam focused by permanent magnets through center of radio-frequency cavity structure. Designed for reliable operation for 10 years, and overall efficiency of 35 percent minimizes prime power input and dissipation of heat.
