Deep Learning-Based Adaptive Remedial Action Scheme with Security Margin for Renewable-Dominated Power Grids

The Remedial Action Scheme (RAS) is designed to take corrective actions after detecting predetermined conditions to maintain system transient stability in large interconnected power grids. However, since RAS is usually designed based on a few selected typical operating conditions, it is not optimal in operating conditions that are not considered in the offline design, especially under frequently and dramatically varying operating conditions due to the increasing integration of intermittent renewables. The deep learning-based RAS is proposed to enhance the adaptivity of RAS to varying operating conditions. During the training, a customized loss function is developed to penalize the negative loss and suggest corrective actions with a security margin to avoid triggering under-frequency and over-frequency relays. Simulation results of the reduced United States Western Interconnection system model demonstrate that the proposed deep learning–based RAS can provide optimal corrective actions for unseen operating conditions while maintaining a sufficient security margin.

Secondary Frequency Regulation from Variable Generation through Uncertainty Decomposition: An Economic and Reliability Perspective

The rapid integration of variable generation (VG), such as photovoltaics (PV), necessitates an increase in the secondary frequency regulation (SFR) to handle the system intra-dispatch interval imbalance because of VG's variation. Although PV has the control capability to provide SFR, the main challenge is in guaranteeing the delivery of PV's energy and SFRs capacities in the automatic generation control (AGC) within each dispatch interval considering its uncertainty. This paper proposes a deliverable VG SFR provision model with endogenous VG's power uncertainty decomposition. First, the uncertainty of VG is decomposed using distributionally robust chance constraints through which the deliverable SFR provision is guaranteed. Next, the intra-interval frequency response of PV's SFR is validated with a user defined AGC model including the PV power plant. Finally, the economic benefits and the reliability improvements such as the frequency deviation reduction with PV providing SFRcan be integrated and evaluated. The proposed model is tested in a modified 18-bus system and in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council test system. Results demonstrate that with the deliverable SFR from PV, the system cost and the frequency reliability can be improved simultaneously. PV's SFR performance can be guaranteed with the proposed model.

Fast Grid Frequency Support from Distributed Energy Resources

This report describes research related to electric power system frequency support from inverter-coupled distributed energy resources (DERs). This research was initiated under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Modernization Laboratory Consortium (GMLC) and also contains work funded through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with Hawaiian Electric. The purpose of this report is to summarize the findings of simulations, hardware testing, power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) simulation, and analysis examining the effects of DER frequency support on the Oahu power system. This report also includes recommendations for consideration in the use of DER grid frequency support functionality, and related topics. Note that a previous GMLC Technical Report from this project also provided specific recommendations for the activation of one specific grid frequency support function, frequency-watt control, for overfrequency events in Hawaii. Those recommendations included recommended frequency-watt control settings, which have since been approved by the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission on October 20, 2017, for system-wide activation. This report builds on the previous report by considering not only overfrequency events but also underfrequency events, and by considering distributed energy storage systems in addition to photovoltaic (PV) systems.

Machine Learning-Based PV Reserve Determination Strategy for Frequency Control on the WECC System

Frequency control from photovoltaic (PV) power plants has great potential to address the frequency response challenge of the power system with high penetrations of renewable generation. Using model-based approaches to determine the optimal PV headroom reserve, however, requires significant online computation and is intractable for an interconnection level system. This paper proposes a machine learning based strategy, that is suitable for real-time operation, to determine the optimal PV reserve for frequency control. The proposed machine learning algorithm is trained and tested on 1,987 offline simulations of a 60% renewable penetration Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) system. Furthermore, the proposed reserve determination strategy is applied on a realistic 1-day operation profile of the WECC system and demonstrates a savings of more than 40% PV headroom compared to a conservative approach. It is evident that the proposed strategy can efficiently and effectively determine the optimal PV frequency control reserve for realistic interconnection systems.

Data-Driven Security Assessment of Power Grids Based on Machine Learning Approach: Preprint

Data-driven security assessment provides key indicators on power system stability using simulations on scheduling models, as opposed to dynamic simulations that are more time-consuming. This paper investigates data-driven security assessment of power grids based on machine learning. Multivariate random forest regression is used as the machine learning algorithm due to its high robustness to the input data. Three stability issues are analyzed using the proposed machine learning tool, including transient stability, frequency stability and small signal stability. The estimation values from machine learning tool are compared with those from dynamic simulations. Results show that the proposed machine learning tool can effectively predict the stability margins for the three stability metrics.

Grid-Following Inverters and Synchronous Condensers: A Grid-Forming Pair?: Preprint

As power systems across the globe continue to achieve higher instantaneous penetrations of power electronic converterinterfaced renewable sources, the stability of these power systems is challenged because of the removal of synchronous machines, from which stability is traditionally derived. Although technological solutions to these stability challenges are on the horizon, such as the use of grid-forming inverters, they are not yet widely applied to larger power systems, which presents operational challenges for power systems achieving these high instantaneous penetrations today. An interim solution using existing technologies is to pair synchronous condensers with grid-following inverters, which might prolong the stability of an operating power system while synchronous generators are turned off during periods of high renewable energy availability. This work examines the transient stability of such a solution using PSCAD simulations of a two-bus system coupled to a variedlength transmission line, with a synchronous condenser at one bus and a grid-following inverter with grid-support functionality at the other. The system is exposed to load step, balanced fault, and unbalanced fault perturbations. It was found that this simple system returned to a steady state for transmission line lengths up to 125 km after 10% load steps, or a variety of fault types.

Data Quality Analysis and Solutions for Distribution-Level PMUs

Synchrophasors provide promising enhancement to the distribution system monitoring. However, different from transmission systems, distribution systems are usually with higher noise, phase unbalance, and distributed energy resources. All of these could impair the data quality of distribution-level phasor measurement units (D-PMUs) and thus deteriorate the performance of D-PMU based applications. Therefore, the data quality of D-PMU should be evaluated to ensure the effectiveness of D-PMU based applications. In this paper, factors in distribution systems that could jeopardize D-PMU data quality are evaluated. The impact of data quality on D-PMU applications is analyzed. Finally, solutions are proposed to improve D-PMU data quality to satisfy these requirements. This work provides effective methods to improve the performance of distribution-level grid monitoring using synchrophasor measurements.

Impacts of Ternary-Pumped Storage Hydropower on U.S. Western Interconenction with Extremely High Renewable Penetrations

In recent years, ternary pumped storage hydropower (T-PSH), as one of the advanced PSH technologies, has attracted more attention from the industry. The interest is because of the capability of providing fast power support for the future electric grid with high penetration of renewable energy (RE). This paper focuses on studying the impact of T-PSH on frequency response of the U.S. Western Interconnection under different penetration levels of RE, which are from 20% to 80%. The detailed model of T-PSH is developed and implemented in the Western Interconnection grid model based on the GE Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF) platform, which can capture the unique dynamics of hydraulic short-circuit (HSC) mode and fast mode switching of T-PSH. To reveal the dynamic benefit from T-PSH, the frequency response of the Western Interconnection has been compared with and without T-PSH. In addition, a new solution is discussed that uses T-PSH to improve system stability issues caused by high RE penetration.
