Calibration of the analog beam-signal hardware for the credited engineered beam power limit system at the Proton Power Upgrade Project at the Spallation Neutron Source

A programmable signal processor-based credited safety control that calculates pulsed beam power based on beam kinetic energy and charge was designed as part of the Proton Power Upgrade (PPU) project at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The system must reliably shut off the beam if the average power exceeds 2.145 MW averaging over 60 seconds. System calibration requires pedigree in measurements, calibration setup, and calculations. This paper discusses the calibration of the analog beam signal components up to and including the Analog Digital Convertors (ADCs) for implementation into the Safety Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs).

The Recent Improvements of the SNS Extraction Kicker Power Supplies

A total of 14 extraction kickers., with one as the hot spare., are in service to extract protons out of the storage ring at the SNS. The jitter issue and the short lifetime of the switches were resolved after the thyratrons were replaced with solid state switches in 2018. This paper discusses the recent improvements. Two thyristor switches suffered overheating damage in separate incidents. One was due to the oil pump failure and the other was the result of a disconnected oil hose. An ultrasonic flow meter and a fiber optic temperature monitoring system have been installed for each extraction kicker power supply. The flow meter continuously monitors the entire tank oil flow. The temperature monitor detects the thyristor switch real-time temperatures in three locations. Fault thresholds are selected so that the thyristor switches are protected from overheating damage. Alarms are configured to alert staff to take actions before faults occur. In addition., the cause of an intermittent misfire issue was identified, and the solution was implemented. Lastly., a future oscilloscope upgrade and an oil level sensor are discussed.

Design of 3He Solenoid Power Supply at BNL

The design of the 3He solenoid power supply at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has been completed and construction is underway. The power supply is an upgrade of the existing Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) solenoid power supply and thus can be used as an operational spare. It is also capable of driving a solenoid magnet that rotates the 3He spin direction. The design is based on the original EBIS solenoid power supply, incorporating bipolar output and short circuit protection features to address the expanded requirements for spin rotation. The output current is a half sine wave of 13ms duration at the repetition rate of 5Hz, with the amplitude of 1900A. This paper will discuss the design and construction status of the 3He solenoid power supply.

Progress in development of pulsed resonant charging power supply for the Spallation Neutron Source extraction kicker PFN system

A conceptual design of the pulsed resonant charging power supply (RCPS) for the beam extraction system of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) was previously reported at the 2019 IEEE Pulsed Power & Plasma Science Conference (PPPS 2019) [1]. Development and testing of the prototype supply continued through the year to finalize the design ahead of the Proton Power Upgrade (PPU). Testing revealed reliability issues with the original resonant charging scheme related to the step-up transformer core. Additional components were incorporated into the system, and some of the original prototype components were replaced to improve performance and reliability of the power supply. This paper describes the changes in the resonant charging scheme, presents the results of testing of the improved prototype at full power level, and shows the final design of the RCPS.
