Linear optics compensation for the HEX superconducting wiggler at NSLS-II

At the NSLS-II ring, a 1.2 m long superconducting wiggler with the maximum 4.34T magnetic field has been installed at a low-β straight section (cell 27) to drive the high energy engineering X-ray scattering (HEX) beamline. To mitigate the potential performance degradation due to the linear optics distortion, a local compensation scheme was adopted and confirmed with the online beam measurement. A feedforward control to enable a dynamic compensation of the linear optics distortion was deployed. It can maintain the storage ring lattice performance when the device main coil current ramps.

A New PCB Rotating Coil at NSLS-II

Several R&D projects are underway at NSLS-II towards an upgrade of its storage ring with a new lattice that will use high field magnets with small bores of 16-22 mm. A large fraction of the high field magnets are expected to be of permanent magnet technology that will require precise magnetic measurements and field harmonics corrections. A new magnetic measurement bench has been built based on a printed circuit board (PCB) coil of 12 mm diameter and 270 mm active length. This PCB coil has the capabil-ity of measuring field quality to a level of 10 ppm of the main field up to the 15th harmonic with a sensitivity between 0.01 m2 and 0.02 m2 at the reference radius of 5 mm. This paper will describe the main features of the rotating coil bench and discuss the measurement results of a permanent-magnet Halbach quadrupole of 12.7 mm bore diameter.

Construction of Cryogen-Free 4.3T Superconducting Wiggler for NSLS-II Ring

With the 3 GeV electron beam energy for the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) ring, only superconducting wigglers (SCW) producing greater than 4T peak field can cover the photon energy range of 20 keV and 200 keV with sufficient number of photons. The High energy Engineering X-ray (HEX) Diffraction beamline, which is primarily funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and NSLS-II, will be equipped with a 1.2m-long SCW with 70 mm period length and 4.3 T on-axis field. This SCW is free from the use of liquid Helium and is cooled only with cryo-coolers. The Electron Beam Chamber (EBC) with vertical aperture of 8 mm is made from 316LN stainless steel and copper plating is applied both surface and +-12.5mm wide from the center in the inner surface. The expected heat load from the electron beam of the NSLS-II ring is estimated to be 10 W/m. Here, we describe the design principles and engineering challenges for the device.

Phasing Magnet for CSX-2 Beamline at NSLS-II

A phasing magnet has been developed at National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) for the Coherent Soft X-ray Scattering (CSX) beamline. The phasing magnet will be located at the center of the straight section in between two identical and independent variably polarized APPLE-II devices. Based on Permanent Magnet technology, the phasing magnet has been designed to achieve the required electron beam delay to properly adjust the phase matching of these two consecutive EPUs (Elliptically Polarizing Undulators) and ensure a positive interference between the photon beam emitted in each device. Also this paper will describe the mechanical and magnetic design together with the final field measurements and magnetic tuning results. Also, the spectral performance of the two EPUs and the method used to properly set the field strength of the phasing magnet for any given radiation wavelength and polarization mode will be presented as well.

A New Magnetic Measurement System for the Future Low Emittance NSLS-II Storage Ring

A new magnetic measurement system is under construc-tion at BNL for accurate field harmonic measurements and fiducialization of magnets for a future upgrade of the NSLS- II storage ring. The entire storage ring is envi-sioned to be replaced with a new lattice concept, known as Complex Bend, which superimposes dipole and high-gradient quadrupole fields. The magnetic measurement system will use rotating wire and a PCB rotating coil specifically designed for small-aperture (< 15 mm) high gradient magnets. In this paper we describe in detail the mechanical design and the data acquisition hardware and software.

Advantages of Superconducting Device using 26 MgB2 Wire

Superconducting undulator (SCU) which can run at higher temperature than 4 Kelvin range has been anticipated for a long time. However, the performance of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) tapes have not improved over the last decade as the industry mostly concentrates on the cost reduction. Magnesium Diboride (MgB2) has a critical temperature of 39 K and the 1 st generation (1G) wire has been in production but it was not sufficient to be used in SCU. Recently the 2 nd generation (2G) wire has been developed. It is estimated to give a similar performance as NbTi wire at 20K. In this paper the advantages of a SCU with 2G MgB2 wire compared to a conventional SCU with NbTi or Nb3Sn3 wire.
