Flash healing of laser-induced graphene

The advancement of laser-induced graphene (LIG) technology has streamlined the fabrications of flexible graphene devices. However, the ultrafast kinetics triggered by laser irradiation generates intrinsic amorphous characteristics, leading to high resistivity and compromised performance in electronic devices. Healing graphene defects in specific patterns is technologically challenging by conventional methods. Herein, we report the rapid rectification of LIG’s topological defects by flash Joule heating in milliseconds (referred to as F-LIG), whilst preserving its overall structure and porosity. The F-LIG exhibits a decreased I D /I G ratio from 0.84 – 0.33 and increased crystalline domain from Raman analysis, coupled with a 5-fold surge in conductivity. Pair distribution function and atomic-resolution imaging delineate a broader-range order of F-LIG with a shorter C-C bond of 1.425 Å. The improved crystallinity and conductivity of F-LIG with excellent flexibility enables its utilization in high-performance soft electronics and low-voltage disinfections. Notably, our F-LIG/polydimethylsiloxane strain sensor exhibits a gauge factor of 129.3 within 10% strain, which outperforms pristine LIG by 800%, showcasing significant potential for human-machine interfaces.

Strain enhances the activity of molecular electrocatalysts via carbon nanotube supports

Abstract Support-induced strain engineering is useful for modulating the properties of two-dimensional materials. However, controlling strain of planar molecules is technically challenging due to their sub-2 nm lateral size. Additionally, the effect of strain on molecular properties remains poorly understood. Here we show that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are ideal substrates for inducing optimum properties through molecular curvature. In a tandem-flow electrolyser with monodispersed cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) on single-walled CNTs (CoPc/SWCNTs) for CO 2 reduction, we achieve a methanol partial current density of >90 mA cm −2 with >60% selectivity, surpassing wide multiwalled CNTs at 16.6%. We report vibronic and X-ray spectroscopies to unravel the distinct local geometries and electronic structures induced by the strong molecule–support interactions. Grand canonical density functional theory confirms that curved CoPc/SWCNTs improve *CO binding to enable subsequent reduction, whereas wide multiwalled CNTs favour CO desorption. Our results show the important role of SWCNTs beyond catalyst dispersion and electron conduction.

Direct Synthesis of Ammonia from Nitrate on Amorphous Graphene with Near 100% Efficiency

Abstract Ammonia is an indispensable commodity in the agricultural and pharmaceutical industries. Direct nitrate‐to‐ammonia electroreduction is a decentralized route yet challenged by competing side reactions. Most catalysts are metal‐based, and metal‐free catalysts with high nitrate‐to‐ammonia conversion activity are rarely reported. Herein, it is shown that amorphous graphene synthesized by laser induction and comprising strained and disordered pentagons, hexagons, and heptagons can electrocatalyze the eight‐electron reduction of NO 3 − to NH 3 with a Faradaic efficiency of ≈100% and an ammonia production rate of 2859 µg cm −2 h −1 at −0.93 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. X‐ray pair‐distribution function analysis and electron microscopy reveal the unique molecular features of amorphous graphene that facilitate NO 3 − reduction. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations establish the critical role of these features in stabilizing the reaction intermediates via structural relaxation. The enhanced catalytic activity enables the implementation of flow electrolysis for the on‐demand synthesis and release of ammonia with >70% selectivity, resulting in significantly increased yields and survival rates when applied to plant cultivation. The results of this study show significant promise for remediating nitrate‐polluted water and completing the NO x cycle.

Interfacial Assembly and Jamming of Soft Nanoparticle Surfactants into Colloidosomes and Structured Liquids

Nanoparticle surfactant (NPS) offers a powerful strategy to generate all-liquid constructs that integrate the inherent properties of the NPs into 3D architectures. In this report using the co-assembly of fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles and amine-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, the assembly and jamming behavior of a new type of NPS at the oil-water interface is uncovered. Unlike "solid" inorganic nanoparticles, "soft" polymeric nanoparticles can reorganize when jammed, leading to a relaxation and deformation of the interfacial assemblies, for example, the 3D printed sugar-coated haw stick-like liquid tubules. With NPS serving as emulsifiers, stable Pickering emulsions are prepared that can be converted into robust colloidosomes with pH responsiveness, showing numerous potential applications for encapsulation and controlled release.

Atomically Thin, Ionic–Covalent Organic Nanosheets for Stable, High–Performance Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction

The incorporation of charged functional groups is effective to modulate the activity of molecular complexes for the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), yet long-term heterogeneous electrolysis is often hampered by catalyst leaching. Herein, an electrocatalyst of atomically thin, cobalt-porphyrin-based, ionic–covalent organic nanosheets (CoTAP-iCONs) is synthesized via a post-synthetic modification strategy for high-performance CO 2 -to-CO conversion. The cationic quaternary ammonium groups not only enable the formation of monolayer nanosheets due to steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion, but also facilitate the formation of a *COOH intermediate, as suggested by theoretical calculations. Consequently, CoTAP-iCONs exhibit higher CO 2 RR activity than other cobalt-porphyrin-based structures: an 870% and 480% improvement of CO current densities compared to the monomer and neutral nanosheets, respectively. Additionally, the iCONs structure can accommodate the cationic moieties. In a flow cell, CoTAP-iCONs attain a very small onset overpotential of 40 mV and a stable total current density of 212 mA cm –2 with CO Faradaic efficiency of >95% at –0.6 V for 11 h. Further coupling the flow electrolyzer with commercial solar cells yields a solar-to-CO conversion efficiency of 13.89%. Finally, this work indicates that atom-thin, ionic nanosheets represent a promising structure for achieving both tailored activity and high stability.
