Improved PARE (Pressurized Airborne Release Equipment) for Damage Ratio, Airborne Release Fraction and Respirable Fraction Testing (Version 4)

This paper describes an improved version of the PARE (Pressurized Airborne Release Equipment) system (Sutter 1983a and Sutter 1983b and Ballinger et al 1987) for powder venting testing. This effort seeks to improve the accuracy of risk estimation for the venting of pressurized powders and the venting of gases through pressurized powders. This includes experimental measurement for estimating DR (damage ratio), ARF (airborne release fraction) and RF (respirable fraction) quantities. The present study was performed to address previously indicated problematic factors (i.e. noted gaps) (US DOE 1994).

FY2022 Filter Test for TRU Waste Drum Prototype Unit

Continuing last year’s (fiscal year 2021) work, a prototype instrument and an NPI-6 Integrated Work Document (IWD) were developed to assess the functionality of filters on transuranic waste containers (commonly called 55 Gallon ring-top drums) without requiring the removal of the drum lid. The purpose of this work is to determine the air flow and pressure characteristics associated with filter clogging, filter pressure drop at a fixed flow rate, and leakage around the lid seal. The FY22 objectives included: (A) Development of prototype device, (B) Drafting an IWD document, (C) Defining a filter clogging parameter, (D) Assessing filter damage due to over-pressure events, and (E) A path forward to obtain approval of the system safety filters in compliance with P101-16 Industrial Ventilation – non HVACR (LANL 2022).

Atomistic thermodynamics and kinetics of dicalcium silicate dissolution

Low-temperature cement manufacturing has garnered academic and industrial attention for its low environmental footprints. However, the sluggish hydration kinetics of the resultant cement affects their early-age strength development. This motivates fundamental studies to unravel the mechanistic picture of the dissolution process and discover science-informed pathways to accelerate hydration. Standard atomistic simulations seldomly exceed a microsecond making them impractical to study slow dissolution processes. We are using rare event sampling techniques, we provide the mechanistic picture of Ca 2+ ion dissolution from a kink site on the dicalcium silicate surface. The Ca 2+ ion dissolution is comprised of two sequential stages: breaking restraints from the kink sites to form a ledge adatom and detaching from the ledge/terrace adatom sites into the solution. The first and second stages feature free energy barriers of ~63 kJ/mol and ~ 29 kJ/mol respectively, making the first stage the rate-limiting step of the entire Ca 2+ dissolution kinetics. Using the reactive flux method, the rate and equilibrium constants for each reaction step are calculated, which yield the Ca 2+ ion activity of ~1.03 × 10 -5 . The diffusion calculations indicate that the surface effects lower the self-diffusion coefficient of Ca 2+ ions at the solid-water interface.

Aerosol Engineering Facility 2021-22 summary sheet [Slides]

The Aerosol Engineering Facility solves problems that involve radioactive particulates, including HEPA air filters, storage containers, exhaust stacks, and continuous air monitors. Other work includes silica dust sampling, bioaerosols, and insecticide sprays. Aerosol technology science describes the behavior of microscopic and nano-sized particles, in both molecular and continuum gas flow regimes.

FY 2021 Filter Test for TRU Waste Drum POC Proof-of-Concept Unit

Continuing last year’s (fiscal year 2020) work, a Proof-of-Concept (POC) instrument was developed to assess the functionality of filters on transuranic waste containers (commonly called 55 Gallon ring-top drums) without requiring removal of the drum lid. The purpose of this work is to determine the air flow and pressure characteristics associated with filter clogging, filter pressure drop, headspace volume, leakage around the lid seal and influence of the additional filter on a bag-out bag.

Intrinsic reactivity and dissolution characteristics of tetracalcium aluminoferrite

Tetracalcium aluminoferrite is one of the main phases of Portland cement, the dissolution characteristics of which however have not been fully revealed. This work adopted first-principles calculations and Mössbauer spectroscopy as well as X-ray diffraction analysis to clarify the intrinsic reactivity of different species of tetracalcium aluminoferrite crystals. Ca ions are the most reactive species of tetracalcium aluminoferrite and Al ions are slightly more reactive than Fe ions. Moreover, the tetrahedral Al and Fe ions are more reactive than the octahedral Al and Fe ions. These indicate dissolution characteristics of tetracalcium aluminoferrite crystals, namely, Ca ions dissolve first and the tetrahedral species dissolve faster than the octahedral species. After the initial dissolution, the dissolved ions nucleate and grow on the defective surface of C{sub 4}AF and the C{sub 4}AF residues are fully hydroxylated. The further hydration thereafter becomes the complex dissolution with the nucleation and growth of hydration products.

Assembly Operations Welding Filter(s) in Drum Calculation

This calculation documents the estimation of temperature and pressure rise inside a 55-gal TRU waste drum with a HEPA filter containing Titanium and Tantalum fume dust based on operational history. Actual Titanium values are believed to be less than 10g on any given filter. Actual Tantalum values are believed to be less than 1g on any given filter
