Avoided Quantum Tricritical Point and Emergence of a Canted Magnetic Phase in LaCr 1 – x Fe x Sb 3

New phases or new phenomena are often observed near-zero temperature phase transitions. These new effects represent nature’s way of avoiding quantum critical phase transitions. Here, we look at the quantum tricritical point (QTCP), the special case where two transitions are driven to zero temperature at the same time. Unlike the case of quantum critical points, the avoidance of quantum tricritical points has yet to be demonstrated. Using chemical substitution and a magnetic field, we drive LaCrSb 3 toward a quantum tricritical point. For the first time near a QTCP, here we observe the emergence of a new magnetic phase and the avoidance of the QTCP via a first order phase transition.

Electron irradiation reveals robust fully gapped superconductivity in LaNiGa 2

The effects of 2.5-MeV electron irradiation were studied in the superconducting phase of single crystals of LaNiGa 2 , using measurements of electrical transport and radio-frequency magnetic susceptibility. The London penetration depth is found to vary exponentially with temperature, suggesting a fully gapped Fermi surface. The inferred superfluid density is close to that of a single-gap weak-coupling isotropic s – wave superconductor. Superconductivity is extremely robust against nonmagnetic point-like disorder induced by electron irradiation. Our results place strong constraints on the previously proposed triplet pairing state by requiring fine-tuned impurity scattering amplitudes and are most naturally explained by a sign-preserving, weak-coupling, and approximately momentum-independent singlet superconducting state in LaNiGa 2 , which does not break time-reversal symmetry. Finally, we discuss how our findings could be reconciled with previous measurements that indicated magnetic signatures in the superconducting phase.

Machine learning predictions of high-Curie-temperature materials

Technologies that function at room temperature often require magnets with a high Curie temperature, $T$ C , and can be improved with better materials. Discovering magnetic materials with a substantial $T$ C is challenging because of the large number of candidates and the cost of fabricating and testing them. Using the two largest known datasets of experimental Curie temperatures, we develop machine-learning models to make rapid $T$ C predictions solely based on the chemical composition of a material. We train a random-forest model and a k -NN one and predict on an initial dataset of over 2500 materials and then validate the model on a new dataset containing over 3000 entries. The accuracy is compared for multiple compounds' representations (“descriptors”) and regression approaches. A random-forest model provides the most accurate predictions and is not improved by dimensionality reduction or by using more complex descriptors based on atomic properties. Further, a random-forest model trained on a combination of both datasets shows that cobalt-rich and iron-rich materials have the highest Curie temperatures for all binary and ternary compounds. An analysis of the model reveals systematic error that causes the model to over-predict low-$T$ C materials and under-predict high-$T$ C materials. For exhaustive searches to find new high-$T$ C materials, analysis of the learning rate suggests either that much more data is needed or that more efficient descriptors are necessary.

Surface Effects on Anisotropic Photoluminescence in One‐Dimensional Organic Metal Halide Hybrids

1D organic metal halide hybrids (OMHHs) exhibit strongly anisotropic optical properties, highly efficient light emission, and large Stokes shift, holding promise for novel photodetection and lighting applications. However, the fundamental mechanisms governing their unique optical properties and in particular the impacts of surface effects are not understood. Herein, 1D C 4 N 2 H 14 PbBr 4 by polarization‐dependent time‐averaged and time‐resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy, as a function of photoexcitation energy, is investigated. Surprisingly, it is found that the emission under photoexcitation polarized parallel to the 1D metal halide chains can be either stronger or weaker than that under perpendicular polarization, depending on the excitation energy. The excitation‐energy‐dependent anisotropic emission is attributed to fast surface recombination, supported by first‐principles calculations of optical absorption in this material. The fast surface recombination is directly confirmed by TRPL measurements, when the excitation is polarized parallel to the chains. The comprehensive studies provide a more complete picture for a deeper understanding of the optical anisotropy in 1D OMHHs.

Suppression of ferromagnetism governed by a critical lattice parameter in CeTiGe 3 with hydrostatic pressure or V substitution

We combine structural and magnetic measurements to compare the different magnetic phase diagrams between the pressure and substitution studies in CeTiGe 3 . We report on the structural, magnetic, and electrical transport properties of single crystals of CeTi 1–x V x Ge 3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.9, and 1), and of polycrystalline samples (x = 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8), as well as structural properties of CeTiGe 3 under pressure up to 9 GPa. The ferromagnetic ordering in CeTiGe 3 is suppressed with V doping in CeTi 1–x V x Ge 3 , and suggests a possible ferromagnetic quantum critical point near x = 0.45. We perform a detailed crystalline electric field (CEF) analysis, and the magnetic susceptibility data in pure CeTiGe 3 and CeVGe 3 can be well explained by the CEF model. The proposed CEF energy levels suggest that there is a gradual change of the ground state from |±5/2 in CeTiGe 3 to |±1/2 in CeVGe 3 , and a suppression of CEF splitting energies near the quantum critical region. When hydrostatic pressure is used instead of chemical substitution, the quantum critical point is avoided by the appearance of magnetic phases above around 4.1 GPa. In the substitution study, the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic regions are well separated, whereas they touch in the pressure study. We observe a different trend in the temperature dependence of the resistivity maximum in both studies, suggesting that the CEF splitting energy is suppressed by V substitution but enhanced by pressure. Here, we also observe different responses in lattice constants between the two studies, highlighting the fact that substitution effects cannot be reduced to chemical pressure effects only. Nevertheless, when the magnetic phase diagrams of both hydrostatic pressure and substitution are compared, we find a common critical lattice constant c = 5.78 Å where the ferromagnetic ordering is suppressed in both studies.

Statistics on magnetic properties of Co compounds: A database-driven method for discovering Co-based ferromagnets

The search for new ferromagnetic compounds is often targeted at known structure families, particularly those containing iron, cobalt, and manganese. Here, we propose a method to expand this search to lesser-known structure types, using a database of experimental Curie and Néel temperatures. This study, in particular, illustrates the case of compounds containing the element cobalt, and we demonstrate how the use of such a database can lead to the discovery of ferromagnetic materials that had previously been overlooked. We report statistics from a literature survey of the magnetic properties of Co-based compounds with more than 33 at. % Co. We classify more than 13 000 compounds by structure type, cobalt content, and magnetic ground state. From these data, compounds TaCo 2 Ga, La 6 Co 13 Bi, and Nd 2 Co 3 were identified as potential ferromagnets, and we confirm their ferromagnetic ordering theoretically via first-principles calculations and experimentally via synthesis and characterization measurements. In addition, the analysis is focused on the collection of data trends and discovery of ferromagnetic materials with easy-axis magnetic anisotropy. Both known ferromagnetic materials with unknown magnetic anisotropy, and unstudied compounds were considered. From the subset of known ferromagnets with unknown anisotropy, the compound Co 2 Mg was synthesized, characterized, and determined to have easy-axis magnetic anisotropy at room temperature.

Effects of magnetic and non-magnetic doping on the vortex lattice in MgB 2

Using small-angle neutron scattering we have studied the vortex lattice in superconducting MgB 2 , doped with either manganese or carbon to achieve a similar suppression of the critical temperature. Measurements were performed with the magnetic field applied along the c-axis, where the vortex lattice in pure MgB 2 is known to undergo a field-and temperature-driven 30° rotation transition. For Mn-doping, the vortex lat- tice phase diagram remains qualitatively similar to that of pure MgB 2 , indicating only a modest effect on the vortex-vortex interaction. In contrast, the vortex lattice rotation transition is completely suppressed in the C-doped case, likely due to a change in the electronic structure which affects the two-band/two-gap nature of superconductivity in MgB 2 . The vortex lattice longitudinal correlation length shows the opposite behavior, remaining roughly unchanged between pure and C-doped MgB 2 while it is significantly reduced in the Mn-doped case. However, the extensive vortex lattice metastability and related activated behavior, observed in conjunction with the vortex lattice transition in pure MgB 2 , is also seen in the Mn doped sample. This shows that the vortex lattice disordering is not associated with a substantially increased vortex pinning.

Eu 5 Al 3 Sb 6 : Al 4 Tetrahedra Embedded in a Rock-Salt-Like Structure

The new Eu 5 Al 3 Sb 6 phase has been successfully synthesized as a pure phase through Sn flux methods yielding large, high-quality crystals. This structure type features disordered Al clusters that appear in the form of dual tetrahedra. It crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/m space group exhibiting a rock-salt-like Eu–Sb framework with [Al 4 ] tetrahedra replacing some of the cationic Eu atoms (space group: C2/m, a = 8.151(1) Å, b = 14.181(2) Å, c = 8.145(1) Å, β = 109.577(2)°). The structure models the [Al 4 ] as dual tetrahedra with the Al atom sites 37.5% occupied along with Eu present on the central site at 8% occupancy and the remainder of the site being vacant. The presence of the [Al 4 ] cluster is further supported by HRTEM. Electronic structure calculations show that this material is a semimetal with observed band crossings close to the Fermi level. Strong Al–Sb antibonding interactions were found from COHP calculations close to the Fermi level and provide the rationale for the deficiency of the Al cluster. Mössbauer spectroscopy on Eu-151 and Sb-121 provides oxidation states of 2+ and 3– along with the local environment. Magnetic susceptibility measurements can be described well with a Curie–Weiss law where an effective moment of 7.80 μB/mol Eu is obtained, consistent with Eu 2+ , and show canted antiferromagnetic behavior below 10 K. Temperature dependent resistivity shows a Kondo-like low-temperature upturn caused by enhanced scattering of the itinerant electrons with the 4f orbitals of Eu.

Separation of Kondo lattice coherence from crystal electric field in CeIn 3 with Nd substitutions

The Ce m M n In 3m+2n (m=1,2;n=0,1) family has been one of the most studied families of heavy fermion compounds. This family has revealed many interesting low-temperature physics phenomena, like quantum critical points, heavy fermion superconductivity, and non-Fermi liquid behavior, when these materials are exposed to pressure, magnetic fields, and/or chemical substitution. In this work, we provide a thorough investigation of the Ce 1-x Nd x In 3 phase diagram through single crystal synthesis, x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements. Previous electrical resistivity measurements on CeIn 3 reveal a broad maximum, T max ~50 K, which has been associated with the Kondo lattice coherence crossover and/or the crystal electric field depopulation effect as the 4f electrons condense from the high-energy quartet down to the ground state doublet. Our findings show that in the most disordered substitution region, x=0.4–0.5, these features disjoin to reveal two distinct broad humps in electrical resistivity measurements. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity data on Ce 1-x Nd x In 3 also reveal the antiferromagnetic ordering competition between CeIn 3 and NdIn 3 , where the T N of CeIn 3 is linearly suppressed to a critical concentration of x Nd ~0.6. This concentration is slightly lower than what was previously reported in nonmagnetically substituted Ce 1-x La x In 3 . Our magnetic susceptibility measurements and subsequent simulations show that in the CeIn 3 antiferromagnetic regime, x Nd ≤0.4, the Nd ions act as free paramagnets. The large magnitude of the associated paramagnetic response then masks the overlapping antiferromagnetic ordering signature of the Ce ions. Overall our study further sheds light on the underlying crystal electric field and Kondo lattice coherence interactions within the Ce m M n In 3m+2n family and could stimulate further studies of these systems via neutron diffraction or under applied pressure.

Dirac lines and loop at the Fermi level in the time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductor LaNiGa 2

Unconventional superconductors have Cooper pairs with lower symmetries than in conventional superconductors. In most unconventional superconductors, the additional symmetry breaking occurs in relation to typical ingredients such as strongly correlated Fermi liquid phases, magnetic fluctuations, or strong spin-orbit coupling in noncentrosymmetric structures. In this article, we show that the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the superconductor LaNiGa 2 is enabled by its previously unknown topological electronic band structure, with Dirac lines and a Dirac loop at the Fermi level. Two symmetry related Dirac points even remain degenerate under spin-orbit coupling. These unique topological features enable an unconventional superconducting gap in which time-reversal symmetry can be broken in the absence of other typical ingredients. Our findings provide a route to identify a new type of unconventional superconductors based on nonsymmorphic symmetries and will enable future discoveries of topological crystalline superconductors.

Robust antiferromagnetism in Y 2 Co 3

We report on a solution-growth based method to synthesise single crystals of Y 2 Co 3 and on its structural and magnetic properties. We find that Y 2 Co 3 crystallizes in the La 2 Ni 3 -type orthorhombic structure with space group Cmce (No. 64), with Co forming distorted kagome lattices. Y 2 Co 3 orders antiferromagnetically below TN=252 K. Magnetization measurements reveal that the moments are primarily aligned along the b axis with evidence for some canting. Band-structure calculations indicate that ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders are nearly degenerate, at odds with experimental results. Magnetization measurements under pressure up to 1 GPa reveal that the Néel temperature decreases with the slope of -1.69 K/GPa. We observe a field-induced spin-flop transition in the magnetization measurements at 1.5 K and 21 T with magnetic field along the b direction. The magnetization is not saturated up to 35 T, indicating that the antiferromagnetic ordering in Y 2 Co 3 is quite robust, which is surprising for such a Co-rich intermetallic.

Electronic structure and topology across T c in the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2

Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 is a magnetic Weyl semimetal, in which ferromagnetic ordering at 177 K is predicted to stabilize Weyl points. We perform temperature and spatial dependent angle--resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements through the Curie temperature (T c ), which show large band shifts and renormalization concomitant with the onset of magnetism. We argue that Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 evolves from a Mott ferromagnet below T c to a correlated metallic state above T c . To understand the magnetism, we derive a tight-binding model of Co-3d x 2 -y 2 orbitals on the kagome lattice. At the filling obtained by first-principles calculations, this model reproduces the ferromagnetic ground state, and results in the reduction of Coulomb interactions due to cluster effects. Using a disordered local moment simulation, we show how this reduced Hubbard U leads to a collapse of the bands across the magnetic transition, resulting in a correlated state which carries associated characteristic photoemission signatures that are distinct from those of a simple lifting of exchange splitting. Finally, the behavior of topology across T c is discussed in the context of this description of the magnetism.

Deconvoluting the Magnetic Structure of the Commensurately Modulated Quinary Zintl Phase Eu 11– x Sr x Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12

The structure, magnetic properties, and 151 Eu and 119 Sn Mössbauer spectra of the solid-solution Eu 11– x Sr x Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12 are presented. A new commensurately modulated structure is described for Eu 11 Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12 ( R 3 m space group, average structure) that closely resembles the original structural description in the monoclinic C 2/ c space group with layers of Eu, puckered hexagonal Zn 2 As 3 sheets, and Zn 2 As 6 ethane-like isolated pillars. The solid-solution Eu 11– x Sr x Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12 (0 < x < 10) is found to crystallize in the commensurately modulated R 3 space group, related to the parent phase but lacking the mirror symmetry. Eu 11 Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12 orders with a saturation plateau at 1 T for 7 of the 11 Eu 2+ cations ferromagnetically coupled (5 K) and shows colossal magnetoresistance at 15 K. The magnetic properties of Eu 11 Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12 are investigated at higher fields, and the ferromagnetic saturation of all 11 Eu 2+ cations occurs at ~8 T. The temperature-dependent magnetic properties of the solid solution were investigated, and a nontrivial structure–magnetization correlation is revealed. The temperature-dependent 151 Eu and 119 Sn Mössbauer spectra confirm that the europium atoms in the structure are all Eu 2+ and that the tin is consistent with an oxidation state of less than four in the intermetallic region. The spectral areas of both Eu(II) and Sn increase at the magnetic transition, indicating a magnetoelastic effect upon magnetic ordering.

Reinvestigation of the intrinsic magnetic properties of (Fe 1–$x$ Co $x$ ) 2 B alloys and crystallization behavior of ribbons

In this paper, new determination of the magnetic anisotropy from single crystals of ( Fe 1 - x Co x ) 2 B alloys are presented. The anomalous temperature dependence of the anisotropy constant is discussed using the standard Callen-Callen theory, which is shown to be insufficient to explain the experimental results. A more material specific study using first-principles calculations with disordered moments approach gives a much more consistent interpretation of the experimental data. Since the intrinsic properties of the alloys with x = 0.3 - 0.35 are promising for permanent magnets applications, initial investigation of the extrinsic properties are described, in particular the crystallization of melt spun ribbons with Cu, Al, and Ti additions. Previous attempts at developing a significant hysteresis have been unsuccessful in this system. Our melt-spinning experiment indicates that this system shows rapid crystallization.

Study of the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in Ce 3– x Mg x Co 9

The Ce 3-x Mg x Co 9 system evolves from a Pauli paramagnetic ground state for x = 0 to a ferromagnetic ground state for x≈0.80 in single-phase, polycrystalline samples [Lamichhane, V. Taufour, A. Palasyuk, Q. Lin, S.L. Budko, and P.C. Canfield, Ce3-xMgxCo9 : transformation of a Pauli paramagnet into a strong permanent magnet, Phys. Rev. Appl. 9 (2018), p. 024023]. In order to better understand this behaviour, single-crystalline samples of Ce 3-x Mg x Co 9 for x = 0.01, 0.16, 0.24, 0.35, 0.43 and 0.50 were grown using the flux growth technique, and electrical transport and magnetic properties were studied. The T C-x phase diagram we infer shows that the system has a quantum phase transition near x = 0.35, transforming to a ferromagnetic ground state.
