Fast-Charging Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 Anode Driven by Light

Lithium-ion batteries with fast charging capabilities are crucial for widespread adoption of electric vehicles, as they will increase acceptance of the technology and reduce range anxiety for drivers. To achieve this, advanced fast charging technologies and alternative methods to enhance the slow electrochemical processes are desperately required. This study applied light-emitting diode (LED) photo-assisted fast charging to Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO), a large bandgap cubic spinel material, to enhance charging speed through electronic-structure coupling. UV LED-generated light irradiation on to the electrode interface boosted the ion diffusion and lithium cation addition by a factor of 1.3 during electrochemical lithiation, resulting in a 30% decrease in charging time under ambient conditions. Red LED light was not effective in accelerating the reaction as it does not provide sufficient energy. The first-principles calculations support the concept that UV illumination generates charges by overcoming the material’s bandgap and effectively reducing it through the introduction of additional titanium defect states.

Correlating wavelength dependence in LiMn2O4 cathode photo-accelerated fast charging with deformations in local structure

The growth in electrified transportation has benefited from the massive worldwide research efforts used to discover and improve electrode materials and electrolytes. Nevertheless, lithium-ion batteries still suffer from a slow-charging limitation. Recently, it has been demonstrated that white light illumination of LiMn2O4 provokes faster charging, improving the kinetics of delithiation without the use of nanostructured active materials. In this work, we probe the mechanism of photo-accelerated fast charging and show that Mn d-d electronic transitions occurring under red light illumination are largely responsible for the increased charging rate. It is further demonstrated through X-ray absorption spectroscopy methods that LiMn2O4 Mn-Mn bond distances shorten after d-electron excitation. The shrinkage in the crystal volume beneficially contributes to delithiation kinetics by lowering the resistance to lithium-ion conduction. Advanced materials that can absorb light to modulate their structure may provide us with a new mechanistic pathway to pursue for increasing charge transfer rates.

Titanium Carbide MXene Hole Contacts for CdTe Photovoltaics

CdTe is a high‐efficiency thin‐film photovoltaic technology that has seen tremendous commercial success over the past decade. Yet despite the improvement of other device characteristics, the fabrication of an ohmic hole back contact layer has remained a challenge due to the high ionization potential of CdTe, which limits the external potential that can be feasibly reached even as other characteristics of the device improve. MXenes, a family of 2D materials with rapidly growing scientific and commercial interest, offer a promising route to forming low‐cost, low‐barrier contacts due to their demonstrated high work function, metallic conductivity, and facile solution processing from benign solvents. Here, it is shown that Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene films processed from an aqueous colloidal dispersion can perform as a highly efficient hole contact material for CdTe solar cells, resulting in high power‐conversion efficiencies. The role of the Schottky barrier formation in Ti 3 C 2 T x ‐contacted CdTe devices is probed, and potential pathways for the future development of this potent combination of materials are elucidated. The modularity of the expansive MXene family of materials presents a promising strategy for developing next‐generation hole contacts for CdTe solar cells.

Narrowing the Phase Distribution of Quasi-2D Perovskites for Stable Deep-Blue Electroluminescence

Solution-processed quasi-2D perovskites contain multiple quantum wells with a broad width distribution. Inhomogeneity results in the charge funneling into the smallest bandgap components, which hinders deep-blue emission and accelerates Auger recombination. Here, a synthetic strategy applied to a range of quasi-2D perovskite systems is reported, that significantly narrows the quantum well dispersity. It is shown that the phase distribution in the perovskite film is significantly narrowed with controlled, simultaneous evaporation of solvent and antisolvent. Modulation of film formation kinetics of quasi-2D perovskite enables stable deep-blue electroluminescence with a peak emission wavelength of 466 nm and a narrow linewidth of 14 nm. Light emitting diodes using the perovskite film show a maximum luminance of 280 cd m –2 at an external quantum efficiency of 0.1%. This synthetic approach will serve in producing new materials widening the color gamut of next-generation displays.

Localizing Tungsten Single Atoms around Tungsten Nitride Nanoparticles for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis in Metal–Air Batteries

Combining isolated atomic active sites with those in nanoparticles for synergizing complex multistep catalysis is being actively pursued in the design of new electrocatalyst systems. However, these novel systems have been rarely studied due to the challenges with synthesis and analysis. Herein, a synergistically catalytic performance is demonstrated with a 0.89 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) onset potential in the four-step oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by localizing tungsten single atoms around tungsten nitride nanoparticles confined into nitrogen-doped carbon (W SAs/WNNC). Through density functional theory calculations, it is shown that each of the active centers in the synergistic entity feature a specific potential-determining step in their respective reaction pathway that can be merged to optimize the intermediate steps involving scaling relations on individual active centers. Impressively, the W SAs/WNNC as the air cathode in all-solid-state Zn-air and Al-air batteries demonstrate competitive durability and reversibility, despite the acknowledged low activity of W-based catalyst toward the ORR.

Perovskite Solar Cells with Enhanced Fill Factors Using Polymer-Capped Solvent Annealing

Despite huge improvements in power conversion efficiencies of perovskite solar cells, the technology is still limited by fill factors at around 80%. In this work, we report perovskite solar cells having exceptionally high fill factors of 85% and enhanced open-circuit voltage without sacrificing short-circuit current through a polymer-capped solvent-annealing process assisted by a hot air blower. Additionally, during the solvent-annealing, the perovskite surface flattens and the perovskite grains agglomerate into micrometer-sized clusters having enlarged α-phase crystallites, while the δ-phase simultaneously disappears. The optimized structure reduces energetic disorder and trap-assisted recombination in the perovskite layer, resulting in an enhanced efficiency from 18.2% to 19.8% and improved device lifetime. Our results provide a pathway to increase the device efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells, and have the potential to stimulate research on scalable poly-crystal perovskite layer fabrication in optoelectronic devices.
