Weak-Lensing Mass Calibration of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Equatorial Sunyaev-Zeldovich Cluster Sample with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Stripe 82 Survey

Mass calibration uncertainty is the largest systematic effect for using clustersof galaxies to constrain cosmological parameters. We present weak lensing mass measurements from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Stripe 82 Survey for galaxy clusters selected through their high signal-to-noise thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) signal measured with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). For a sample of 9 ACT clusters with a tSZ signal-to-noise greater than five, the average weak lensing mass is (4.8 plus or minus 0.8) times 10 (sup 14) solar mass, consistent with the tSZ mass estimate of (4.7 plus or minus 1.0) times 10 (sup 14) solar mass, which assumes a universal pressure profile for the cluster gas. Our results are consistent with previous weak-lensing measurements of tSZ-detected clusters from the Planck satellite. When comparing our results, we estimate the Eddington bias correction for the sample intersection of Planck and weak-lensing clusters which was previously excluded.

On optimal design for the blade-root/hub interface in jet engines

Two major problems identified with the design of the blade-root/hub interface are discussed. The first is the so-called friction contact problem which has two special features: unilateral contact and Coulomb's friction. One of the difficulties in this problem is that the portions of contact and sticking/sliding surfaces are not known a priori. The second is the shape optimization problem which is characterized either by the minimization of the maximum contact pressure or by the minimization of the equivalent stress on the boundary. Design variables are the shapes of the blade-root and the hub. It is noted that friction contact and shape optimization problems are strongly coupled in the present design problem.

Shape optimization including finite element grid adaptation

The prediction of optimal shape design for structures depends on having a sufficient level of precision in the computation of structural response. These requirements become critical in situations where the region to be designed includes stress concentrations or unilateral contact surfaces, for example. In the approach to shape optimization discussed here, a means to obtain grid adaptation is incorporated into the finite element procedures. This facility makes it possible to maintain a level of quality in the computational estimate of response that is surely adequate for the shape design problem.

Scaling a discrete structural model to match measured modal frequencies

The structure modification problem, where the computer model of a structure is to be upgraded on the basis of experimental measurements of normal mode frequencies, is approached by the modal energy concept. The modes for correlation with test data are selected on the basis of relative strain energy participation. The resulting procedure can be viewed as an extension of White's (1972) method. Its advantage lies in that both the number and choice of structural parameters to be varied in the modification are arbitrary.

An optimal structural design algorithm using optimality criteria

An algorithm for optimal design is given which incorporates several of the desirable features of both mathematical programming and optimality criteria, while avoiding some of the undesirable features. The algorithm proceeds by approaching the optimal solution through the solutions of an associated set of constrained optimal design problems. The solutions of the constrained problems are recognized at each stage through the application of optimality criteria based on energy concepts. Two examples are described in which the optimal member size and layout of a truss is predicted, given the joint locations and loads.
