Unified theory of spin and charge in a ferromagnet

Here, we derive a unified theory of spin and charge degrees of freedom in a ferromagnet. The spin-transfer torque and spin electromotive force are examined from the coarse-grained perspective of collective coordinates. The resulting equations of motion reflect a balance of conservative, gyroscopic (Berry-phase), and dissipative forces. We then expand the space of collective coordinates by adding the electric charge. The adiabatic spin-transfer torque and spin electromotive force (emf) turn out to be a gyroscopic force; their nonadiabatic counterparts are a dissipative force.

Gyroscopic tensor of a magnetic soliton

The gyroscopic force acting on a ferromagnetic soliton reflects the tendency of spins to precess. Its components increase linearly with (generalized) velocities of the soliton. The proportionality coefficients form the gyroscopic tensor, a generalization of Thiele’s gyrovector. Originally introduced as an auxiliary quantity, the gyroscopic tensor turns out to be a mathematical object of fundamental importance with a long history going back to Lagrange. Here, we review the applications of the gyroscopic tensor and its historical roots.

Strong magnetoelastic coupling in Mn 3 X ( X = Ge , Sn)

Here we measure the full elastic tensors of Mn 3 Ge and Mn 3 Sn as a function of temperature through their respective antiferromagnetic phase transitions. Large discontinuities in the bulk moduli at the Néel transitions indicate strong magnetoelastic coupling in both compounds. Strikingly, the discontinuities are nearly a factor of 10 larger in Mn 3 Ge than in Mn 3 Sn. We use the magnitudes of the discontinuities to calculate the pressure derivatives of the Néel temperature, which are 39 K/GPa 14.3 K/GPa for Mn 3 Ge and Mn 3 Sn, respectively. We measured the in-plane shear modulus c 66 , which couples strongly to the magnetic order, in magnetic fields up to 18 T and found quantitatively similar behavior in both compounds. Recent measurements have demonstrated strong piezomagnetism in Mn 3 Sn : Our results suggest that Mn 3 Ge may be an even better candidate for this effect.

Chiral magnetism: a geometric perspective

We discuss a geometric perspective on chiral ferromagnetism. Much like gravity becomes the effect of spacetime curvature in theory of relativity, the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction arises in a Heisenberg model with nontrivial spin parallel transport. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors serve as a background SO(3) gauge field. In 2 spatial dimensions, the model is partly solvable when an applied magnetic field matches the gauge curvature. At this special point, solutions to the Bogomolny equation are exact excited states of the model. We construct a variational ground state in the form of a skyrmion crystal and confirm its viability by Monte Carlo simulations. The geometric perspective offers insights into important problems in magnetism, e.g., conservation of spin current in the presence of chiral interactions.

Antichiral spin order, its soft modes, and their hybridization with phonons in the topological semimetal Mn 3 Ge

Here we report the magnetic structure and spin excitations of Mn 3 Ge , a breathing kagome antiferromagnet with transport anomalies attributed to Weyl nodes. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we show the magnetic order is a k = 0 coplanar state belonging to a Γ 9 irreducible representation, which can be described as a perfect 120 ° antichiral structure with a moment of 2.2(1) μ B /Mn, superimposed with weak collinear ferromagnetism. Inelastic neutron scattering shows three collective Q = 0 excitations at Δ 1 = 2.9 ( 6 ) meV, Δ 2 = 14.6 ( 3 ) meV, and Δ 3 = 17.5 ( 3 ) meV. A field theory of Q ≈ 0 spin waves in triangular antiferromagnets with a 120 ° spin structure was used to classify these modes. The in-plane mode ( α ) is gapless, Δ 1 is the gap to a doublet of out-of-plane spin excitations ( β x , β y ), and Δ 2 , Δ 3 result from hybridization of optical phonons with magnetic excitations. While a phenomenological spin Hamiltonian including exchange interactions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and single-ion crystal field terms can describe aspects of the Mn-based magnetism, spin-wave damping [ Γ = 25 ( 8 ) meV] and the extended range of magnetic interactions indicate itinerant magnetism consistent with the transport anomalies.

Quantum Statistics of Vortices from a Dual Theory of the X Y Ferromagnet

In this work, we extend the well-known mapping between the easy-plane ferromagnet and electrostatics in d = 2 spatial dimensions to dynamical and quantum phenomena in a d = 2+1 spacetime. Ferromagnetic vortices behave like quantum particles with an electric charge equal to the vortex number and a magnetic flux equal to the transverse spin of the vortex core. Vortices with half-integer core spin exhibit fermionic statistics.
