Optical Characterization of Window Materials for Aerospace Applications

An optical metrology laboratory has been developed to characterize the optical properties of optical window materials to be used for aerospace applications. Several optical measurement systems have been selected and developed to measure spectral transmittance, haze, clarity, birefringence, striae, wavefront quality, and wedge. In addition to silica based glasses, several optical lightweight polymer materials and transparent ceramics have been investigated in the laboratory. The measurement systems and selected empirical results for non-silica materials are described. These measurements will be used to form the basis of acceptance criteria for selection of window materials for future aerospace vehicle and habitat designs.

The Naturalistic Flight Deck System: An Integrated System Concept for Improved Single-Pilot Operations

This paper reviews current and emerging operational experiences, technologies, and human-machine interaction theories to develop an integrated flight system concept designed to increase the safety, reliability, and performance of single-pilot operations in an increasingly accommodating but stringent national airspace system. This concept, know as the Naturalistic Flight Deck (NFD), uses a form of human-centered automation known as complementary-automation (or complemation) to structure the relationship between the human operator and the aircraft as independent, collaborative agents having complimentary capabilities. The human provides commonsense knowledge, general intelligence, and creative thinking, while the machine contributes specialized intelligence and control, extreme vigilance, resistance to fatigue, and encyclopedic memory. To support the development of the NFD, an initial Concept of Operations has been created and selected normal and non-normal scenarios are presented in this document.

Fabrication of Extremely Short Length Fiber Bragg Gratings for Sensor Applications

A new technique and a physical model for writing extremely short length Bragg gratings in optical fibers have been developed. The model describes the effects of diffraction on the spatial spectra and therefore, the wavelength spectra of the Bragg gratings. Using an interferometric technique and a variable aperture, short gratings of various lengths and center wavelengths were written in optical fibers. By selecting the related parameters, the Bragg gratings with typical length of several hundred microns and bandwidth of several nanometers can be obtained. These short gratings can be apodized with selected diffraction patterns and hence their broadband spectra have a well-defined bell shape. They are suitable for use as miniaturized distributed strain sensors, which have broad applications to aerospace research and industry as well.

Planar Poincare Charts For Polarization Calculations

New type of stereographic projection of Poincare sphere makes flat charts for use in graphical analyses of polarization-transformation characteristics of optical components or systems. Charts used to predict polarization state at output of birefringent material for any arbitrary input polarization state. Analyses of some polarization-dependent optical components or systems reduced to simple graphical procedures. Planar charts more practical to use and store.

Micro-displacement fiber sensor using two-frequency interferometry

A He-Ne Zeeman laser has been utilized as a two-frequency light source in a Michelson-type micro-displacement fiber sensor. A polarization maintaining fiber has been installed in the sensing arm, which facilitates flexibility and allows the sensing region to be remotely located. This fiber sensing arm is arranged to replace a quarterwave plate component. The fiber sensor system has a resolution of half a micrometer.

Planar Poincare chart - A planar graphic representation of the state of light polarization

The planar Poincare chart, which represents the complete planar equivalence of the Poincare sphere, is proposed. The four sets of basic lines are drawn on two separate charts for the generalization and convenience of reading the scale. The chart indicates the rotation of the principal axes of linear birefringent material. The relationships between parameters of the two charts are given as 2xi-2phi (orientation angle of the major axis-ellipticity angle) pair and 2alpha-delta (angle of amplitude ratio-phase difference angle) pair. The results are useful for designing and analyzing polarization properties of optical components with birefringent properties.

Optical transmission through a polarization preserving single mode optical fiber at two Ar(+) laser wavelengths

The transmission characteristics of two Ar(+) laser wavelengths through a twenty meter Panda type Polarization Preserving Single Mode Optical Fiber (PPSMOF) were measured. The measurements were done with both single and multi-longitudinal mode radiation. In the single longitudinal mode case, a degrading Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) is observed as a backward scattering loss. By choosing an optimum coupling system and manipulating the input polarization, the threshold of the SBS onset can be raised and the transmission efficiency can be increased.

Planar Poincare Chart for predicting the change of polarization state in the elliptical birefringent material

The Planar Poincare Chart has been developed as a complete planar equivalence of the Poincare sphere. The four main parameters of the light wave represented by the chart are drawn separately on two parts, so that any orientation of the optical component can be shown on the chart. The Planar Poincare Chart can be used to graphically design and analyze the polarization dependent components, e.g. to predict the polarization change in the birefringent material. Depending on how the chart is projected, different types of birefringent materials can be investigated. Previously, the chart for linear and circular birefringent materials has been reported. In a more general case, a chart for elliptical birefringent material is developed where the linear and circular cases can be considered as special cases.
