The CARMENES Search for Exoplanets Around M Dwarfs: Revisiting the GJ 581 Multi-Planetary System With New Doppler Measurements From CARMENES, HARPS, and HIRES

Context.GJ 581 is a nearby M dwarf known to host a packed multiple planet system composed of two super-Earths and a Neptune-mass planet. We present new orbital analyses of the GJ 581 system, utilizing recent radial velocity (RV) data obtained from the CARMENES spectrograph combined with newly reprocessed archival data from the HARPS and HIRES spectrographs. Aims. Our aim was to analyze the post-discovery spectroscopic data of GJ 581, which were obtained with CARMENES. In addition, we used publicly available HIRES and HARPS spectroscopic data to seek evidence of the known and disputed exoplanets in this system. We aimed to investigate the stellar activity of GJ 581 and update the planetary system’s orbital parameters using state-of-the-art numerical models and techniques. Methods. We performed a periodogram analysis of the available precise CARMENES, HIRES, and HARPS RVs and of stellar activity indicators. We conducted detailed orbital analyses by testing various orbital configurations consistent with the RV data. We studied the posterior probability distribution of the parameters fit to the data and we explored the long-term stability and overall orbital dynamics of the GJ 581 system. Results. We refined the orbital parameters of the GJ 581 system using the most precise and complete set of Doppler data available. Consistent with the existing literature, our analysis confirms that the system is unequivocally composed of only three planets detectable in the present data, dismissing the putative planet GJ 581 d as an artifact of stellar activity. Our N-body fit reveals that the system’s inclination is i=47.0+14.6−13.0deg, which implies that the planets could be up to 30% more massive than their previously reported minimum masses. Furthermore, we report that the GJ 581 system exhibits long-term stability, as indicated by the posterior probability distribution, characterized by secular dynamical interactions without the involvement of mean motion resonances.

A Detailed Analysis of the Gl 486 Planetary System

Context . The Gl 486 system consists of a very nearby, relatively bright, weakly active M3.5V star at just 8 pc with a warm transiting rocky planet of about 1.3 R ⨁ and 3.0 M ⨁ . It is ideal for both transmission and emission spectroscopy and for testing interior models of telluric planets. Aims . To prepare for future studies, we aim to thoroughly characterise the planetary system with new accurate and precise data collected with state-of-the-art photometers from space and spectrometers and interferometers from the ground. Methods . We collected light curves of seven new transits observed with the CHEOPS space mission and new radial velocities obtained with MAROON-X at the 8.1m Gemini North telescope and CARMENES at the 3.5m Calar Alto telescope, together with previously published spectroscopic and photometric data from the two spectrographs and TESS. We also performed near-infrared interferometric observations with the CHARA Array and new photometric monitoring with a suite of smaller telescopes (AstroLAB, LCOGT, OSN, TJO). This extraordinary and rich data set was the input for our comprehensive analysis. Results . From interferometry, we measure a limb-darkened disc angular size of the star Gl 486 at θ LDD = 0.390 ± 0.018 mas. Together with a corrected Gaia EDR3 parallax, we obtain a stellar radius R * = 0.339 ± 0.015 R ⨀ . We also measure a stellar rotation period at P rot = 49.9 ± 5.5 days, an upper limit to its XUV (5–920 Å) flux informed by new Hubble/STIS data, and, for the first time, a variety of element abundances (Fe, Mg, Si, V, Sr, Zr, Rb) and C/O ratio. Moreover, we imposed restrictive constraints on the presence of additional components, either stellar or sub-stellar, in the system. With the input stellar parameters and the radial-velocity and transit data, we determine the radius and mass of the planet Gl 486 b at R p = 1.343 +0.063 -0.062 R ⨀ and M p = 3.00 +0.13 -0.13 M ⨁ , with relative uncertainties of the planet radius and mass of 4.7% and 4.2%, respectively. From the planet parameters and the stellar element abundances, we infer the most probable models of planet internal structure and composition, which are consistent with a relatively small metallic core with respect to the Earth, a deep silicate mantle, and a thin volatile upper layer. With all these ingredients, we outline prospects for Gl 486 b atmospheric studies, especially with forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (Webb) observations.

Magma Ocean Evolution of the TRAPPIST-1 Planets

Recent observations of the potentially habitable planets TRAPPIST-1 e, f, and g suggest that they possess large water mass fractions of possibly several tens of wt% of water, even though the host star’s activity should drive rapid atmospheric escape. These processes can photolyze water, generating free oxygen and possibly desiccating the planet. After the planets formed, their mantles were likely completely molten with volatiles dissolving and exsolving from the melt. In order to understand these planets and prepare for future observations, the magma ocean phase of these worlds must be understood. To simulate these planets, we have combined existing models of stellar evolution, atmospheric escape, tidal heating, radiogenic heating, magma ocean cooling, planetary radiation, and water-oxygen-iron geochemistry. We present Magm Oc, a versatile magma ocean evolution model, validated against the rocky Super-Earth GJ 1132b and early Earth. We simulate the coupled magma ocean-atmospheric evolution of TRAPPIST-1 e, f, and g for a range of tidal and radiogenic heating rates, as well as initial water contents between 1 and 100 Earth oceans. We also reanalyze the structures of these planets and find they have water mass fractions of 0–0.23, 0.01–0.21, and 0.11–0.24 for planets e, f, and g, respectively. Our model does not make a strong prediction about the water and oxygen content of the atmosphere of TRAPPIST-1 e at the time of mantle solidification. In contrast, the model predicts that TRAPPIST-1 f and g would have a thick steam atmosphere with a small amount of oxygen at that stage. For all planets that we investigated, we find that only 3 ́5% of the initial water will be locked in the mantle after the magma ocean solidified.

VLTI-MATISSE Chromatic Aperture-Synthesis Imaging of η Carinae’s Stellar Wind Across the Brα Line: Periastron Passage Observations in February 2020

Context: Eta Carinae is a highly eccentric, massive binary system (semimajor axis∼15.5 au) with powerful stellar winds and a phase-dependent wind-wind collision (WWC) zone. The primary star, ηCar A, is a luminous blue variable (LBV); the secondary, η Car B, is a Wolf-Rayet or O star with a faster but less dense wind. Aperture-synthesis imaging allows us to study the mass loss from the enigmatic LBV η Car. Understanding LBVs is a crucial step toward improving our knowledge about massive stars and their evolution. Aims: Our aim is to study the intensity distribution and kinematics of η Car’s WWC zone. Methods: Using the VLTI-MATISSE mid-infrared interferometry instrument, we perform Brα imaging of η Car’s distorted wind. Results: We present the first VLTI-MATISSE aperture-synthesis images of η Car A’s stellar wind in several spectral channels distributed across the Brα 4.052 μm line (spectral resolving power R∼960). Our observations were performed close to periastron passage in February 2020 (orbital phase∼14.0022). The reconstructed iso-velocity images show the dependence of the primary stellar wind on wavelength or line-of-sight (LOS) velocity with a spatial resolution of 6 mas (∼14 au). The radius of the faintest outer wind regions is∼26 mas (∼60 au). At several negative LOS velocities, the primary stellar wind is less extended to the northwest than in other directions. This asymmetry is most likely caused by the WWC. Therefore, we see both the velocity field of the undisturbed primary wind and the WWC cavity. In continuum spectral channels, the primary star wind is more compact than in line channels. A fit of the observed continuum visibilities with the visibilities of a stellar wind CMFGEN model (CMFGEN is an atmosphere code developed to model the spectra of a variety of objects) provides a full width at half maximum fit diameter of the primary stellar wind of 2.84±0.06 mas (6.54±0.14 au). We compare the derived intensity distributions with the CMFGEN stellar wind model and hydrodynamic WWC models.

The Asymmetric Inner Disk of the Herbig Ae Star HD 163296 in the Eyes of VLTI/MATISSE: Evidence for a Vortex?

Context.A complex environment exists in the inner few astronomical units of planet-forming disks. High-angular-resolution observa-tions play a key role in our understanding of the disk structure and the dynamical processes at work.Aims.In this study we aim to characterize the mid-infrared brightness distribution of the inner disk of the young intermediate-massstar HD 163296 from early VLTI/MATISSE observations taken in theL- andN-bands. We put special emphasis on the detection ofpotential disk asymmetries.Methods.We use simple geometric models to fit the interferometric visibilities and closure phases. Our models include a smoothedring, a flat disk with an inner cavity, and a 2D Gaussian. The models can account for disk inclination and for azimuthal asymmetriesas well. We also perform numerical hydrodynamical simulations of the inner edge of the disk.Results.Our modeling reveals a significant brightness asymmetry in theL-band disk emission. The brightness maximum of the asym-metry is located at the NW part of the disk image, nearly at the position angle of the semimajor axis. The surface brightness ratio inthe azimuthal variation is3.5±0.2. Comparing our result on the location of the asymmetry with other interferometric measurements,we confirm that the morphology of ther<0.3au disk region is time-variable. We propose that this asymmetric structure, located in ornear the inner rim of the dusty disk, orbits the star. To find the physical origin of the asymmetry, we tested a hypothesis where a vortexis created by Rossby wave instability, and we find that a unique large-scale vortex may be compatible with our data. The half-lightradius of theL-band-emitting region is0.33±0.01au, the inclination is52◦+5◦−7◦, and the position angle is143◦±3◦. Our models predictthat a non-negligible fraction of theL-band disk emission originates inside the dust sublimation radius forμm-sized grains. Refractorygrains or large (&10μm-sized) grains could be the origin of this emission.N-band observations may also support a lack of smallsilicate grains in the innermost disk (r.0.6au), in agreement with our findings fromL-band data.
