CW copper injector for SRF industrial cryomodules

Compact SRF industrial linacs can provide unique parameters of the beam (>1 MW and >1-10 MeV) hardly achievable by normal conducting linacs within limited space. SRF technology was prohibitively expensive until the development of conduction cooling which opened the way for compact stand alone SRF systems suitable for industrial and research applications. Limited cooling capacity puts strict requirements on the beam parameters with zero losses of the beam on the SRF cavity walls. This implies strict requirements on the beam energy to be accepted by the cryomodule and most importantly the beam bunching with zero particles in between. We designed a CW normal conducting RF injector which consists of a gridded RF gun integrated with a first cell of a copper booster cavity to satisfy these requirements. Here we present a complete design of a booster cavity including beam dynamics, RF, thermomechanical and engineering design.

Compact, High-Power Superconducting Electron Linear Accelerators for MW Industrial Applications

Fermilab has developed a novel concept for an industrial electron linac using Nb₃Sn coating technology and conduction cooling. We will show the range of multi-cavity linac designs targeted toward various applications. We will also discuss technology development status with results on conduction cooling of SRF cavities based on cryocoolers, which removes the need for liquid Helium, thus making SRF technology accessible to industrial applications. These conduction-cooled linacs can generate electron beam energies up to 10 MeV in continuous-wave operation and can reach higher power (>=1 MW) by combing several modules. Compact and light enough to mount on mobile platforms, our machine is anticipated to enable new in-situ environmental remediation applications such as waste-water treatment for urban areas, X-ray medical device sterilization, and innovative pavement applications. We also show cost-economics and key R&D areas that much be addressed for a practical machine.

Built-in Thermionic Electron Source for an SRF Linacs

The design of a thermionic electron source connected directly to a superconducting cavity, the key part of an SRF gun, is described. The results of beam dynamics optimization are presented which allow lack of beam current intercepting in the superconducting cavity. The electron source concept is presented including the cathode-grid assembly, thermal insulation of the cathode from the cavity, and the gun resonator design. The cavity thermal load caused by the gun is analyzed including the static heat load, black body radiation, backward electron heating, etc.

Recent Progress Toward a Conduction-Cooled Superconducting Radiofrequency Electron Gun

High-repetition-rate electron sources have widespread applications. This contribution discusses the progress toward a proof-of-principle demonstration for a conduction-cooled electron source. The source consists of a simple modification of an elliptical cavity that enhances the field electric field at the photocathode surface. The source was cooled to cryogenic temperatures and preliminary measurements for the quality factor and accelerating field were performed. Additionally, we present future plans to improve the source along with simulated beam-dynamics performances.
