WISE Views of Centaurs & Scattered Disk Objects

The Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer surveyed most of the sky in the Mid-Infrared From January through September of 2010. In addition to 120 comets, more than 30 Centaurs and Scattered Disc Objects (SDOs) were observed and discovered. We will present preliminary results from the analysis ofthese outer solar system bodies.

WISE Observations of Comets, Centaurs, & Scattered Disk Objects

The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) was luanched on December 14, 2009. WISE imaged more than 99% of the sky in the mid-infrared for a 9-month mission lifetome. In addition to its primary goals of detecting the most luminous infrared galaxies and the nearest brown dwarfs, WISE, detected over 155500 of solar system bodies, 33700 of which were previously unknown. Most of the new objects were main Belt asteriods, and particular emphasis was on the discovery of Near Earth Asteoids. Hundreds of Jupiter Trojans have been imaged by WISE as well. However a substantial number of Centaurs, Scattered Disc Objects (SDOs), & cometary objects, were observed and discovered.

Radar and Optical Observations of Asteroid 1998 KY26

Observations of near-Earth asteroid 1998 KY26 shortly after its discovery reveal a slightly elongated spheroid with a diameter of about 30 m, a composition analogous to carbonaceous chondritic meteorites, and a rotation period of 10.7 minutes, which is an order of magnitude shorter that that measured for any other solar system object.

The variability of Halley's Comet during the Vega, Planet-A, and Giotto encounters

Narrowband photometry of Halley obtained at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), Mauna Kea Observatory (MKO), and Perth Observatory was combined to determine the relative level of activity during the interval spanning the spacecraft encounters. Measurements of the flux from the comet in emission bands of OH, NH, CN, C3, and C2, as well as at 2 continuum points, were obtained at CTIO on each night between 5 March and 17 March 1986. Observations were made on many of these same dates at MKO and Perth using comparable interference filters. The date clearly show variation of a factor of 2.5 in the production of all observed species with a characteristic time scale of a few days.
