The Effect of Bonding on the Fragmentation of Small Systems

Recent dissociative recombination (DR) experiments have reported that the observed reaction products depend on the structure, bonding, and charge centre of the molecular ion. For examples, the dominant product channel observed in the DR of D5(+)(2), N2O2(+)(1), and D5O2(+)(3) suggests that the former two ions have the form D3(+) D2, and NO(+) NO(1), respectively, whilst the latter is known to have the form D2O D(+) D2O (3). Here we compare and contrast these observations by investigating the DR of one of the simplest such systems, Li(+) H2. This system, a weakly bound cluster with the charge centre located on the lithium atom, will provide us with an excellent opportunity for investigating the role played by the type of bonds and charge centre in the DR process.

More About V-Grooved GaAs Solar Cells

NASA technical memorandum presents additional information about experimental devices described in "V-Grooved GaAs Solar Cell" (LEW-14954). Experimental V-groove cells exhibited improved optical coupling and greater short-circuit current.

V-Grooved GaAs Solar Cell

V-grooved GaAs solar photovoltaic cells increase optical coupling and greater conversion of light into electricity. Increases both trapping of incident light and lengths of optical paths in cell material. Net effect increases in total absorptivity, tolerance to damage by energetic particles, and short-circuit current. These improvements expected to follow from similar improvements obtained in silicon solar cells.

Peeled film GaAs solar cells for space power

Gallium arsenide (GaAs) peeled film solar cells were fabricated, by Organo-Metallic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (OMVPE), incorporating an aluminum arsenide (AlAs) parting layer between the device structure and the GaAs substrate. This layer was selectively removed by etching in dilute hydrofloric (HF) acid to release the epitaxial film. Test devices exhibit high series resistance due to insufficient back contact area. A new design is presented which uses a coverglass superstrate for structural support and incorporates a coplanar back contact design. Devices based on this design should have a specific power approaching 700 W/Kg.

Peeled film GaAs solar cell development

Thin-film, single-crystal gallium arsenide (GaAs) solar cells could exhibit a specific power approaching 700 W/kg including coverglass. A simple process has been described whereby epitaxial GaAs layers are peeled from a reusable substrate. This process takes advantage of the extreme selectivity of the etching rate of aluminum arsenide (AlAs) over GaAs in dilute hydrofluoric acid. The feasibility of using the peeled film technique to fabricate high-efficiency, low-mass GaAs solar cells is presently demonstrated. A peeled film GaAs solar cell was successfully produced. The device, although fractured and missing the aluminum gallium arsenide window and antireflective coating, had a Voc of 874 mV and a fill factor of 68 percent under AM0 illumination.

The GaAs solar cells with V-grooved emitters

Geometrically structured surfaces have become increasingly important to solar cell efficiency improvements and radiation tolerance. Gallium arsenide solar cells with a V-grooved front surface which demonstrate improved optical coupling and higher short-circuit current compared to planar cells were fabricated. GaAs homojunction cells were fabricated by organometallic chemical vapor deposition (OMCVD) on an n+ substrate. The V-grooves were formed on the surface with an anisotropic etch, and an n-type buffer and p-type emitter were grown by OMCVD, followed by ohmic contacts. Reflectivity measurements show significantly lower reflectance for the microgrooved cell compared to the planar structure. The short circuit current of the V-grooved solar cell is consistently higher than that of the planar controls.

A V-grooved GaAs solar cell

V-grooved GaAs solar cells promise the benefits of improved optical coupling, higher short-circuit current, and increased tolerance to particle radiation compared to planar cells. A GaAs homojunction cell was fabricated by etching a V-groove pattern into an n epilayer (2.1 x 10 to the 17th power per cu cm) grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on an n+ substrate (2.8 x 10 to the 18th power per cu cm) and then depositing and MOCVD p epilayer (4.2 x 10 to the 18th power per cu cm). Reflectivity measurements on cells with and without an antireflective coating confirm the expected decrease in reluctance of the microgrooved cell compared to the planar structure. The short circuit current of the V-grooved solar cell was 13 percent higher than that of the planar control.

Laboratory evaluation of a pilot cell battery protection system for photovoltaic applications

An energy storage method for the 3.5 kW battery power system was investigated. The Pilot Cell Battery Protection System was tested for use in photovoltaic power systems and results show that this is a viable method of storage battery control. The method of limiting battery depth of discharge has the following advantages: (1) temperature sensitivity; (2) rate sensitivity; and (3) state of charge indication. The pilot cell concept is of interest in remote stand alone photovoltaic power systems. The battery can be protected from damaging overdischarge by using the proper ratio of pilot cell capacities to main battery capacity.

Multi-cell battery protection system

A multi-cell battery protection system is described wherein each cell has its own individual protective circuit. The protective circuits consist of a solid state comparator unit and a high current switching device such as a relay. The comparator units each continuously monitor the associated cell and when the cell voltage either exceeds a predetermined high level or falls below a predetermined low level, the relay is actuated whereby a bypass circuit is completed across the cell thereby effectively removing the cell from the series of cells.

Thomas, R. D.

Battery single-cell protection system

Protective circuit consists of solid state comparator switch and high current switching device combined into single module, which can be mounted directly on each cell as part of cell or battery case construction. System prohibits driving cells beyond set voltage limits and allows deeper discharge without cell reversal.

The system was operated under computer control for periods up to 30 hr. The adequacy of the programming and interfacing techniques used was verified.

Thermocouple tape

A thermocouple which may be rolled as a tape until needed and a method of making it are described. Thermoelectrically different metals are applied to a strip of electrically nonconductive material in longitudinally overlapping relationship. Apertures may be provided along the tape in overlapping region at predetermined intervals. An adhesive material is applied to the side of the tape opposite the thermoelectric metals either before or after the thermoelectric metals are deposited. The tape may be cut or torn to form a thermocouple device which is ready for application to a body whose temperature is to be monitored or measured.

Thomas, R. D.

Thermocouple tape

Preformed, low cost, thin film thermocouples on adhesive tapes were fabricated. Metal strips of two dissimilar metals were laid on opposite edges of plastic substrate so that they overlap in center portion, forming thermocouple junction. Useful temperature range for polyimide films was 4 to 673 K.

Effect of load voltage on thin film cuprous sulfide: Cadmium sulfide solar cells thermally cycled in a simulated space environment

Thin-film Cu2S-CdS solar cells, loaded at various fixed values of load resistance, were thermally cycled for 1429 cycles in a simulated space environment. Cell performance was measured under controlled conditions in air before and after thermal cycling. These data were used to determine the effect of load voltage on cell performance. The performance of the cells was relatively independent of load voltage up to about 0.39 volt. This appears to be a threshold voltage, beyond which there was a significant loss in cell performance. Fortunately, this threshold voltage appears to be sufficiently higher than the maximum power voltage of 0.33 volt so that it can be avoided in most applications.
