Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 is a member of a family of orthorhombic nonsymmorphic rare-earth intermetallics that combines large localized magnetic moments and itinerant exchange with a low carrier density and perpendicular glide planes. This may result in special topological crystalline (wallpaper fermion) or axion insulating phases. Recent studies of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 single crystals have revealed colossal negative magnetoresistance and multiple magnetic phase transitions. Here, we clarify this ordering process using neutron scattering, resonant elastic x-ray scattering, muon spin-rotation, and magnetometry. The nonsymmorphic and multisite character of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 results in coplanar noncollinear magnetic structures with an Ising-like net magnetization along the a axis. A reordering transition, attributable to competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings, manifests as the onset of a second commensurate Fourier component. In the absence of spatially resolved probes, the experimental evidence for this low-temperature state can be interpreted either as an unusual double- q structure or in a phase separation scenario. The net magnetization produces variable anisotropic hysteretic effects which also couple to charge transport. The implied potential for functional domain physics and topological transport suggests that this structural family may be a promising platform to implement concepts of topological antiferromagnetic spintronics. 180m Ta is a rare nuclear isomer whose decay has never been observed. Its remarkably long lifetime surpasses the half-lives of all other known β and electron capture decays due to the large K-spin differences and small energy differences between the isomeric and lower energy states. Detecting its decay presents a significant experimental challenge but could shed light on neutrino-induced nucleosynthesis mechanisms, the nature of dark matter and K-spin violation. For this study, we repurposed the Majorana Demonstrator, an experimental search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76 Ge using an array of high-purity germanium detectors, to search for the decay of 180m Ta. More than 17 kilograms, the largest amount of tantalum metal ever used for such a search was installed within the ultra-low background Majorana Demonstrator detector array. In this paper we present results from the first year of Ta data taking and provide an updated limit for the 180m Ta half-life on the different decay channels. With new limits up to 1.5 × 10 19 years, we improved existing limits by one to two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, this result is the most sensitive search for a single β and electron capture decay ever achieved.
Single crystals of the Zintl compound Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 were synthesized using a Ga-Sb flux. We report the temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), magnetization (M), resistivity (ρ), specific heat (C), and thermal expansion (α). We also report high-resolution powder x-ray diffraction data that support a structural phase transition with accompanying signatures seen in C(T), ρ(T), and α(T). We find Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering at T N1 = 9.0 K from anomalies seen in χ(T), C(T), and α(T), as well as a potential reorientation of Eu 2+ spins at T N2 = 7.5 K and T N3 = 7.2 K. In conclusion, density functional theory calculations predict Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 to be semiconducting; however, electrical resistivity measurements show bad-metal behavior that indicates the presence of disorder.

We report antiferromagnetism in a prototypical quantum critical metal CeCoIn 5 is known to be induced by slight substitutions of nonmagnetic Zn atoms for In. In nominally 7% Zn-substituted CeCoIn 5 , an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state coexists with heavy fermion superconductivity. Heterogeneity of the electronic states is investigated in Zn-doped CeCoIn 5 by means of nuclear quadrupole and magnetic resonances (NQR and NMR). Site-dependent NQR relaxation rates 1/T 1 indicate that the AFM state is locally nucleated around Zn substituents in the matrix of a heavy fermion state, and percolates through the bulk at the AFM transition temperature T N . At lower temperatures, an anisotropic superconducting (SC) gap below the SC transition temperature Tc, and the SC state permeates through the AFM regions via a SC proximity effect. Applying an external magnetic field induces a spin-flop transition near 5T, reducing the volume of the AFM regions. Consequently, a short-ranged inhomogeneous AFM state survives and coexists with a paramagnetic Fermi liquid state at high fields.
CeCd 3 As 3 is a rare-earth triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with large inter-layer separation. Here, our field-dependent heat capacity measurements at dilution fridge temperatures allow us to trace the field-evolution of the spin-excitation gaps throughout the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions. The distinct gap evolution places strong constraints on the microscopic pseudo-spin model, which, in return, yields a close quantitative description of the gap behavior. This analysis provides crucial insights into the nature of the magnetic state of CeCd 3 As 3 , with a certainty regarding its stripe order and low-energy model parameters that sets a compelling paradigm for exploring and understanding the rapidly growing family of the rare-earth-based triangular-lattice systems

The Berry curvature in magnetic systems is attracting interest due to the potential tunability of topological features via the magnetic structure. f electrons, with their large spin-orbit coupling, abundance of noncollinear magnetic structures, and high electronic tunability, are attractive candidates to search for tunable topological properties. In this study, we measure anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the distorted kagome heavy fermion antiferromagnet U 3 Ru 4 Al 12 . Furthermore, a large intrinsic AHE in high fields reveals the presence of a large Berry curvature. Moreover, the fields required to obtain the large Berry curvature are significantly different between B ∥ a and B ∥ a * , providing a mechanism to control the topological response in this system. Theoretical calculations illustrate that this sensitivity may be due to the heavy fermion character of the electronic structure. These results shed light on the Berry curvature of a strongly correlated band structure in magnetically frustrated heavy fermion materials but also emphasize 5 f electrons as an ideal playground for studying field-tuned topological states.

We will use TOPEX/POSEIDON altimetry in combination with ongoing and planned efforts, including data from the European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS-1), in situ measurements designed specifically to complement satellite altimetry, and assimilation of these several data types into eddy-resolving numerical models in order to understand the dynamics and energetics of midlatitude western boundary currents (specifically, the Gulf Stream and the Kuroshio Extension). A better understanding of the recirculation of midlatitude gyres can best be undertaken in the format of such regional, eddy-resolving experiments. Such regional programs will enhance and be enhanced by the larger scale circulation studies of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) as well as by global-scale eddy-resolving models that we will develop prior to the TOPEX/POSEIDON mission. This effort includes participation on the TOPEDX/POSEIDON Science Team.
Satellites used for mobile communications need to serve large numbers of small, low cost terminals. The most important parameters affecting the capacity of such systems are the satellite equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) and gain to noise temperature ratio (G/T) and available bandwidth. Satellites using frequency addressed beams provide high EIRP and G/T with high-gain antenna beams that also permit frequency reuse over the composite coverage area. Frequency addressing is easy to implement and compatible with low-cost terminals and offers higher capacity than alternative approaches.
The magnetic moment of La(0.9Sr0.1)2CuO4-y was measured as a function of temperature and magnetic field, and the onset of superconductivity was found to occur at a temperature of 35 K. At 2 K, the dc magnetic susceptibility was found to reach 83 percent of perfect diamagnetism. Field studies have shown that the sample is a type-II superconductor and that the temperature dependences of the critical fiedls are anomalous. Its critical fields, kappa, and lambda(eff) are much larger than those for (La0.9Ba0.1)2CuO4-y, and their temperature dependences cannot be explained in terms of BCS theory.
Numerical experiments using simulated altimeter data were conducted in order to examine the assimilation of altimeter-derived sea surface heights into numerical ocean circulation models. A reduced-gravity, primitive equation circulation model of the Gulf of Mexico was utilized; the Gulf of Mexico was chosen because of its amenability to modeling and the ability of low vertical-mode models to reproduce the observed dynamical features of the Gulf circulation. The simulated data were obtained by flying an imaginary altimeter over the model ocean and sampling the model sea surface just as real altimeter would observe the true ocean. The data were used to initialize the numerical model and the subsequent forecast was compared to the true numerical solution. Results indicate that for a stationary, circular eddy, approximately three to four tracks (either ascending or descending) across the eddy are sufficient to ensure adequate spatial resolution.
