Strong-field ionization of plasmonic nanoparticles

We modeled strong-field ionization of metal nanoparticles by intense infrared laser pulses, accounting for and distinguishing in photoelectron (PE) momentum distributions the effects of PE correlation, PE–residual-charge interactions, PE rescattering and recombination, and transient laser-induced plasmonic fields. Our numerical results for 5-, 30-, and 70-nm-diameter gold nanospheres and peak laser-pulse intensities of 8.0×10 12 and 1.2×10 13 W/cm 2 show how PE velocity-map images are distinctly shaped by PE Coulomb repulsion, residual-charge accumulations, and plasmonic near fields. In contrast to gaseous atomic targets and dielectric nanoparticles, we find very large PE cutoff energies, for both directly emitted and rescattered PEs, that exceed the incident laser-pulse ponderomotive energy by two orders of magnitude.

Enhanced extreme ultraviolet high-harmonic generation from chromium-doped magnesium oxide

High-order harmonic generation (HHG) from crystals is emerging as a new ultrashort source of coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light. Doping the crystal structure can offer a new way to control the source properties. Here, we present a study of HHG enhancement in the XUV spectral region from an ionic crystal, using dopant-induced vacancy defects, driven by a laser centered at a wavelength of 1.55 μm. Our numerical simulations based on solutions of the semiconductor Bloch equations and density-functional theory are supported by our experimental observations and demonstrate an increase in the XUV high harmonic yield from doped bulk magnesium oxide (MgO) compared to undoped MgO, even at a low defect concentration. The anisotropy of the harmonic emission as a function of the laser polarization shows that the pristine crystal's symmetry is preserved. Our study paves the way toward the control of HHG in solids with complex defects caused by transition-metal doping.

Characterization of light-induced potentials in the strong-field dissociation of O 2 +

In this work, we investigate theoretically the imprints of light-induced potentials (LIPs) on the dissociation dynamics of O 2 + molecular ions, as observable in angle-resolved fragment kinetic-energy-release (KER) spectra. Following the vibrational and rotational dynamics of the initial pump-laser-excited cationic nuclear wave packet, while accounting for the dipole coupling between the O 2 + ( a 4 Π u ) and O 2 + ( f 4 Π g ) electronic states in 800-nm 40-fs probe-laser pulses with peak intensities between 10 13 and 10 14 W / cm 2 , we calculate angle-resolved KER spectra which reveal characteristic energy- and angle-dependent fringe structures. These fringes shift downward in energy as the molecular alignment angle θ relative to the probe-pulse polarization direction increases from 0 to π / 2 . The angle-dependent shifts in the KER fringes increase for larger probe-pulse peak intensities and follow the angle and light-wave-intensity dependence of the vibrational spectrum in the associated Floquet bond-hardening well, which is a manifestation of transient O 2 + nuclear-probability trapping in the LIP during dissociation. By examining the rovibrational dynamics of the dissociating molecular cation near the light-induced conical intersection (LICI) in the cationic LIP surface at θ = π / 2 , we identify related angle-dependent structures in the KER spectra, suggesting a means for assessing the significance of LICIs in molecular dissociation pathways.

Molecular bond stabilization in the strong-field dissociation of O 2 +

We theoretically examine the rotational and vibrational dynamics of O 2 + molecular ions exposed to intense, short laser pulses for conditions realized in contemporary pump-probe experiments. We solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for an initial distribution of randomly aligned molecular ions. For fixed peak intensities, our numerical results show that total, angle-integrated O 2 + → O( 3 P) + O + ( 4 S 0 ) dissociation yields do not monotonically increase with increasing infrared-probe pulse duration. We find this pulse-duration-dependent stabilization to be consistent with the transient trapping of nuclear probability density in a light-induced (bond-hardening) potential-energy surface and robust against rotational excitation. We analyze this stabilization effect and its underlying bond-hardening mechanism (i) in the time domain, by following the evolution of partial nuclear probability densities associated with the dipole-coupled O 2 + (a 4 Π u ) and O 2 + (f 4 Π g ) cationic states, and (ii) in the frequency domain, by examining rovibrational quantum-beat spectra for the evolution of the partial nuclear probability densities associated with these states. In this work, our analysis reveals the characteristic timescale for the bond-hardening mechanism in O 2 + and explains the onset of bond stabilization for sufficiently long pulse durations.
