Frequency Stability Enhancement in a Fully Solar Power Grid: A Case Study on the Saudi Model

Recently, renewable energy sources (RES) such as solar photovoltaic (PV) have been recognized for their significant potential. Several studies have explored the issue of frequency stability with high RES penetration. A significant observation related to this issue is the decline in the weighted short circuit ratio (WSCR), which has the potential to adversely affect system stability. This research uniquely focuses on the gradual transition of the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) system to a fully integrated solar PV grid, offering insight and methodology that can be adapted for other power systems. While a variety of mitigation methods are available, synchronous condensers (SC) were used in this study to stabilize grid frequency, and their implementation has been shown to improve the overall performance of the system. In response to the observed decline in WSCR, a comprehensive short circuit analysis was applied across all regions in the Saudi power grid model to evaluate the reduction in short circuit power and highlight areas requiring enhancement. Finally, scenarios illustrating frequency response with a gradual increase in SCR were analyzed, with the objective of establishing a stable, fully solar PV power system that is resilient to sudden power grid disturbances.

Mitigating Voltage Instability in the Saudi Grid for a Decarbonized, Fully Solar Power System

Lately, solar photovoltaic (PV) has received significant interest due to its economic and environmental benefits. As the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) increases into existing power grids, challenges such as the decrease in short circuit ratio (SCR) are introduced. Here, this paper investigates a case study of the Saudi power grid, examining the voltage stability as the grid transitions from traditional power generation to 100% penetration of solar PV gradually. Moreover, the paper explores the relationship between the increase in solar penetration and the potential effects on the short circuit MVA (SCMVA), which could significantly impact the overall SCR of the system. To meet the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) recommendation of maintaining SCR at a particular level, synchronous condensers (SC)s were integrated into the grid. The effectiveness of utilizing SCs to maintain the system voltage at optimal levels in a fully solar grid is also considered. In addition, this paper covers the weak grid analysis via utilizing the Newton-Raphson load flow method, along with PV and QV curve analyses. The purpose behind that is to determine weak bus locations in need of voltage improvements, and to meet the amount of reactive power to be injected. Finally, the amount of power being delivered by SCs will be added progressively in three scenarios to show the enhancements on SCR more precisely.

Frequency Disturbance Event Detection Based on Synchrophasors and Deep Learning

Power system frequency disturbances are caused by various generation and transmission events including generator trips, load disconnections, line trips, etc. Accurate detections of the events are crucial to bulk power system situation awareness and event investigation. This paper utilizes the recent advances of deep learning to build a convolutional neural network model to detect events in an accurate yet straightforward manner. Herein, the rate of change of frequency and the relative angle shift are converted to images as the inputs of the proposed model. Finally, this paper uses two convolutional neural networks and classifier fusion to achieve the detection result. Compared with the conventional event detection algorithm and the frequency only deep learning model, the proposed model improves the detection accuracy by over 48%. As a promising tool for bulk power system situation awareness, the proposed model requires a short decision time, which is suitable for practical scenarios.
