Inferential Framework for Autonomous Cryogenic Loading Operations

We address problem of autonomous cryogenic management of loading operations on the ground and in space. As a step towards solution of this problem we develop a probabilistic framework for inferring correlations parameters of two-fluid cryogenic flow. The simulation of two-phase cryogenic flow is performed using nearly-implicit scheme. A concise set of cryogenic correlations is introduced. The proposed approach is applied to an analysis of the cryogenic flow in experimental Propellant Loading System built at NASA KSC. An efficient simultaneous optimization of a large number of model parameters is demonstrated and a good agreement with the experimental data is obtained.

Fast Optimization for Aircraft Descent and Approach Trajectory

We address problem of on-line scheduling of the aircraft descent and approach trajectory. We formulate a general multiphase optimal control problem for optimization of the descent trajectory and review available methods of its solution. We develop a fast algorithm for solution of this problem using two key components: (i) fast inference of the dynamical and control variables of the descending trajectory from the low dimensional flight profile data and (ii) efficient local search for the resulting reduced dimensionality non-linear optimization problem. We compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with numerical solution obtained using optimal control toolbox General Pseudospectral Optimal Control Software. We present results of the solution of the scheduling problem for aircraft descent using novel fast algorithm and discuss its future applications.

Benchmarking of Computational Models for NDE and SHM of Composites

Ultrasonic wave phenomena constitute the leading physical mechanism for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) of solid composite materials such as carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. Computational models of ultrasonic guided-wave excitation, propagation, scattering, and detection in quasi-isotropic laminates can be extremely valuable in designing practically realizable NDE and SHM hardware and software with desired accuracy, reliability, efficiency, and coverage. This paper presents comparisons of guided-wave simulations for CFRP composites implemented using three different simulation codes: two commercial finite-element analysis packages, COMSOL and ABAQUS, and a custom code implementing the Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique (EFIT). Comparisons are also made to experimental laser Doppler vibrometry data and theoretical dispersion curves.

Multilayer Volume Holographic Optical Memory

We demonstrate a scheme for volume holographic storage based on the features of shift selectivity of a speckle reference wave hologram. The proposed recording method allows more efficient use of the recording medium and increases the storage density in comparison with spherical or plane-wave reference beams. Experimental results of multiple hologram storage and replay in a photorefractive crystal of iron-doped lithium niobate are presented. The mechanism of lateral and longitudinal shift selectivity are described theoretically and shown to agree with experimental measurements.
