Resolving local ordering and structure in Mn x Ge 1- x Te alloys through thermodynamic ensembles of pair distribution functions

Characterizing local bonding environments in complex materials is essential for understanding and optimizing their properties. Equally as important is the ability to predict local motifs as a function of synthesis conditions, enhancing chemists’ ability to design properties into materials. In this study, we present an approach to leverage statistical mechanics to generate temperature- and energy-informed ensemble averaged pair distribution functions (PDFs). This method, which we have named Thermodynamic Ensemble Averages of PDFs for Ordering and Transformations (TEAPOT), utilizes density functional theory (DFT) to relax supercells while incorporating energetic penalties for local order, enabling accurate and computationally efficient analysis of local structure. We apply this method to the neutron PDF measurements of the pseudobinary MnTe–GeTe (MGT) alloy, demonstrating its capability to resolve complex local distortions and chemical ordering. Our results reveal detailed insights into phase transformations and local distortions driven by Mn substitution. For compositions that globally present as rock salt, our analysis reveals that Ge coordination geometry is heavily impacted by synthesis temperature. We propose that high temperature synthesis conditions promote a lowered Ge polyhedra distortion, promoting high charge carrier mobility due to the alignment of local and global structure. Incorporating statistical mechanics and computation into experimental analysis thus guides synthesis of tailored local structure.

YbV 3 ⁢Sb 4 and EuV 3 ⁢Sb 4 vanadium-based kagome metals with Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ zigzag chains

Here, in this work, we present Yb⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 and Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 , two compounds exhibiting slightly distorted vanadium-based kagome nets interleaved with zigzag chains of divalent Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ ions. Single crystal growth methods are reported alongside magnetic, electronic, and heat capacity measurements. Yb⁢V 3⁢ Sb 4 is a nonmagnetic metal with no collective phase transitions observed between 60 mK and 300 K. Conversely, Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 is a magnetic kagome metal exhibiting easy-plane ferromagneticlike order below T C =32 K with hints of modulated spin texture under low field. With Yb⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 and Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 we demonstrate another direction for the discovery and development of vanadium-based kagome metals while incorporating the chemical and magnetic degrees of freedom offered by a rare-earth sublattice.

High Thermoelectric Performance in 2D Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 Nanoplate Composites Enabled by Energy Carrier Filtering and Low Thermal Conductivity

Thermoelectrics are an important class of materials with great potential in alternative energy applications. In this study, two-dimensional (2D) nanoplates of the layered chalcogenides, Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 , are synthesized and composites of the two are investigated for their thermoelectric properties. The two materials, Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 , were synthesized as hexagonal, 2D nanoplates via a colloidal polyol route. The as-synthesized Sb 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 Te 3 vary drastically from one another in their lateral and vertical dimensions as revealed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The single crystalline nanoplate nature is deduced by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction. Nanoplates have well-defined hexagonal facets as seen in the scanning and transmission electron microscopy images. The nanoplates were consolidated as an anisotropic nanostructured pellet via spark plasma sintering. Preferred orientation observed in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern and scanning electron microscopy images of the fractured pellets confirm the anisotropic structure of the nanoplates. Thermoelectric properties in the parallel and perpendicular directions were measured, revealing strong anisotropy with a significant reduction to thermal conductivity in the perpendicular direction due to increased phonon scattering at nanoplate interfaces. All compositions, except that of the 25% Bi 2 Te 3 nanoplate composite, behave as degenerate semiconductors with increasing electrical resistivity as the temperature increases. The Seebeck coefficient is also increased dramatically in the nanocomposites, the highest reaching 210 μV/K for 15% Bi 2 Te 3 . The increase in Seebeck is attributed to energy carrier filtering at the nanoplate interfaces. Overall, these enhanced thermoelectric properties lead to a drastic increase in the thermoelectric performance in the perpendicular direction, with zT ~ 1.26, for the 15% Bi 2 Te 3 nanoplate composite at 450 K.

Short-Range Order Tunes Optical Properties in Long-Range Disordered ZnSnN2-ZnO Alloy

Local site ordering offers a new paradigm for property control in functional materials. However, systems that exhibit a propensity for local order and global disorder are often challenging to characterize, and demonstrations of ordering-induced property tuning are few and far between. Here, we demonstrate that short-range ordering tunes the optical absorption edge in the long-range disordered alloy system (ZnSnN2)1-x(ZnO)2x at x = 0.25. We use combinatorial cosputtering to synthesize a set of thin-film samples spanning this alloy space. X-ray diffraction demonstrates lattice contraction as a function of alloy composition, confirming that a mixed-anion and -cation alloy has been synthesized. Using N and O K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure in conjunction with simulations of cation-disordered supercell structures, we find that samples exhibit octet-rule-breaking motifs around both anions. Upon annealing at an alloy composition of x = 0.25, X-ray absorption analysis suggests that local motif structure shifts toward octet-rule-conserving while long-range disorder is maintained. Spectroscopic ellipsometry reveals that local ordering increases the absorption edge energy at constant composition. Additionally, alloy-induced optical absorption edge tuning is demonstrated. This work paves the way toward property tuning with short-range ordering in (ZnSnN2)1-x(ZnO)2x and beyond.

Boron Phosphide Films by Reactive Sputtering: Searching for a P‐Type Transparent Conductor

Abstract With an indirect band gap in the visible and a direct band gap at a much higher energy, boron phosphide (BP) holds promise as an unconventional p‐type transparent conductor. This work reports on reactive sputtering of amorphous BP films, their partial crystallization in a P‐containing annealing atmosphere, and extrinsic doping by C and Si. The highest hole concentration to date for p‐type BP (5 × 10 20 cm −3 ) is achieved using C doping under B‐rich conditions. Furthermore, bipolar doping is confirmed to be feasible in BP. An anneal temperature of at least 1000 °C is necessary for crystallization and dopant activation. Hole mobilities are low and indirect optical transitions are stronger than that predicted by theory. Low crystalline quality probably plays a role in both cases. High figures of merit for transparent conductors might be achievable in extrinsically doped BP films with improved crystalline quality.

High Throughput Discovery of Thermoelectric Materials (Final Report)

New materials form the heart of advances in energy technologies; however, the actual synthesis and characterization of new materials remains an enormous bottleneck. In this award, the research team focused on developing new approaches overcome this bottleneck. The approach involved depositing at high (supersonic) velocity multiple crystalline materials at a substrate while controlling the resulting film composition. The film could then be annealed to create a homogeneous alloy that was suitable for characterization. High throughput characterization tools were developed in parallel. The research focused on thermoelectric materials, which convert the flow of heat into electrical power. The development of new thermoelectric materials with high power conversion efficiency could displace traditional mechanical heat engines (e.g. turbines).
