On ultrafast x-ray scattering methods for magnetism

With the introduction of x-ray free electron laser sources around the world, new scientific approaches for visualizing matter at fundamental length and time-scales have become possible. As it relates to magnetism and ‘magnetic-type’ systems, advanced methods are being developed for studying ultrafast magnetic responses on the time-scales at which they occur. We describe three capabilities which have the potential to seed new directions in this area and present original results from each: pump-probe x-ray scattering with low energy excitation, x-ray photon fluctuation spectroscopy, and ultrafast diffuse x-ray scattering. By combining these experimental techniques with advanced modeling together with machine learning, we describe how the combination of these domains allows for a new understanding in the field of magnetism. Finally, we give an outlook for future areas of investigation and the newly developed instruments which will take us there.

High resolution ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations in La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3

La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 (LCMO30) is a perovskite manganite with a phase transition (T C = 238 K) between a paramagnetic insulator and a ferromagnetic metal. We use single-crystal, inelastic neutron scattering to refine previous work on the low energy (ℏω < 10 meV) magnetic excitations. At 300 K the spectrum consists of a diffusive ferromagnetic component at the pseudo-cubic Brillouin zone center coexisting with a quasielastic excitation located at the pseudo-cubic Brillouin zone edge. Both components are anti-correlated with ferromagnetic long-range order, showing weakened intensity at 215 K in the ferromagnetic phase. Polarized neutron scattering shows both features to be purely magnetic in origin. Furthermore, this indicates the simultaneous presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations (located, respectively, at the zone center and zone edge) in a three-dimensional perovskite, while this coexistence had been previously observed only in a bilayer compound.

Terahertz emission spectroscopy of ultrafast exciton shift current in the noncentrosymmetric semiconductor CdS

The charge-neutral exciton has been predicted to carry genuine photocurrent due to the geometric Berry phase of the electronic bands, if the inversion symmetry in a crystal is broken. Here we detect such exciton shift current in a prototypical polar semiconductor CdS by using terahertz emission spectroscopy. A distinct peak emerges in the photocurrent spectra at the energy of the exciton resonance, which is demonstrated to result from the distinct displacements of electrons and holes in real space within the excitons to produce a finite transient charge current at subpicosecond time scale. Our findings elucidate the Berry phase physics of the charge-neutral photoexcitations and also shed light on the novel energy harvesting mechanism by exciton generation.

Spectral weight reduction of two-dimensional electron gases at oxide surfaces across the ferroelectric transition

The discovery of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface has set a new platform for all-oxide electronics which could potentially exhibit the interplay among charge, spin, orbital, superconductivity, ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity. In this work, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and conductivity measurement, we found the reduction of 2DEGs and the changes of the conductivity nature of some ferroelectric oxides including insulating Nb-lightly-substituted KTaO 3 , BaTiO 3 (BTO) and (Ca,Zr)-doped BTO across paraelectric-ferroelectric transition. We propose that these behaviours could be due to the increase of space-charge screening potential at the 2DEG/ferroelectric regions which is a result of the realignment of ferroelectric polarisation upon light irradiation. This finding suggests an opportunity for controlling the 2DEG at a bare oxide surface (instead of interfacial system) by using both light and ferroelectricity.
