The STIS parallel survey: Introduction and first results

The installation of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) allows for the first time two-dimensional optical and ultraviolet slitless spectroscopy of faint objects from space. The STIS Parallel Survey (SPS) routinely obtains broad band images and slitless spectra of random fields in parallel with HST observations using other instruments. The SPS is designed to study a wide variety of astrophysical phenomena, including the rate of star formation in galaxies at intermediate to high redshift through the detection of emission-line galaxies. We present the first results of the SPS, which demonstrate the capability of STIS slitless spectroscopy to detect and identify high-redshift galaxies.

Variable stars in the dwarf galaxy GR 8 (DDO 155)

Observations of the resolved stars in dwarf galaxy GR 8, obtained over the period 1980 February to 1994 March, are presented. Thirty-four separate epochs were searched for variable stars, and a total of six were found, of which one has Cepheid characteristics. After correction for Galactic extinction this single Cepheid yields a distance modulus of m - M = 26.75 +/- 0.35. This corresponds to a distance of 2.24 Mpc, placing GR 8 near the Local Group (LG) zero-velocity surface. The other five variable stars are very red, and possibly have long periods of order 100 days or more.

Correlation between low level fluctuations in the x ray background and faint galaxies

A correlation between low-level x-ray fluctuations in the cosmic x-ray background flux and the large numbers of galaxies found in deep optical imaging, to m(sub v) is less than or equal to 24 - 26, is desired. These (faint) galaxies by their morphology and color in deep multi-color CCD images and plate material were optically identified. Statistically significant correlations between these galaxies and low-level x-ray fluctuations at the same positions in multiple deep Einstein HRI observations in PAVO and in a ROSAT PSPC field were searched for. Our aim is to test the hypothesis that faint 'star burst' galaxies might contribute significantly to the cosmic x-ray background (at approximately 1 keV).
