LH2 on-orbit storage tank support trunnion design and verification

A detailed fatigue analysis was conducted to provide verification of the trunnion design in the reusable Cryogenic Fluid Management Facility for Shuttle flights and to assess the performance capability of the trunnion E-glass/S-glass epoxy composite material. Basic material property data at ambient and liquid hydrogen temperatures support the adequacy of the epoxy composite for seven-mission requirement. Testing of trunnions fabricated to the flight design has verified adequate strength and fatigue properties of the design to meet the requirements of seven Shuttle flights.

Fiberglass epoxy laminate fatigue properties at 300 and 20 K

A subcritical liquid hydrogen orbital storage and supply experiment is being designed for flight in the Space Shuttle cargo bay. The Cryogenic Fluid Management Experiment (CFME) includes a liquid hydrogen tank supported in a vacuum jacket by two fiberglass epoxy composite trunnion mounts. The ability of the CFME to last for the required seven missions depends primarily on the fatigue life of the composite trunnions at cryogenic temperatures. To verify the trunnion design and test the performance of the composite material, fatigue property data at 300 and 20 K were obtained for the specific E-glass fabric/S-glass unidirectional laminate that will be used for the CFME trunnions. The fatigue life of this laminate was greater at 20 K than at 300 K, and was satisfactory for the intended application.

Cryogenic fluid management experiment trunnion fatigue verification

A subcritical liquid hydrogen orbital storage and transfer experiment was designed for flight in the Shuttle cargo bay. The Cryogenic Fluid Management Experiment (CFME) includes a liquid hydrogen tank supported in a vacuum jacket by two fiberglass epoxy trunnion mounts. This composite material was selected for the trunnions since it provides desirable strength, weight and thermal characteristics for supporting cryogenic tankage. An experimental program was conducted to provide material property and fatigue data for S-glass epoxy composite materials at ambient and liquid hydrogen temperatures and to verify structural integrity of the CFME trunnion supports.

Faint-object spectrograph optical bench

The Faint-Object Spectrograph (FOS) is one of five scientific instruments under development for use with the Optical Telescope Assembly (OTA) of NASA's Space Telescope. It is a dual-channel spectrograph operating with two independent 512-channel pulse-counting Digicons. The FOS will be employed in connection with the study of scientific questions associated with quasars, active galaxies, normal distant and local group galaxies, a wide class of objects within the Milky Way Galaxy and neighboring galaxies, and objects within the solar system. The FOS contains an optical bench which supports all optical elements. Dimensional stability was the primary design requirement for the optical bench. This led to the selection of a graphite/epoxy structure using laminates with very low coefficients of thermal expansion and high stiffness. The technical requirements are considered and details of fabrication are discussed.

General instability analysis

HOLBOAT computer program provides instability analysis of inhomogeneous, anisotropic, right-circular cylinder or segment under combined loading. Program is based on Kirchhoff-Love hypothesis, general anisotropic constitutive equations, and Flugge's differential equations of equilibrium.
