Spectroscopy of molecular oxygen in the atmospheres of Venus and Mars

The abundances of molecular oxygen in the atmospheres of Venus and Mars are sensitive to fundamental photochemical processes. A new upper limit is reported for the molecular oxygen mixing ratio (O2/CO2 less than 3 x 10 to the -7th) in the integrated column above the visible cloud tops of Venus, based on spectroscopic observations carried out in early spring, 1982. During the same observing period, an O2 column abundance of 8.5 cm-am for the atmosphere of Mars was measured, slightly below the O2 abundances measured a decade earlier.

A study of the Jovian forbidden line S II nebula at high spectral resolution

Observations of forbidden line S II 6716-6731 A emissions from the Jovian magnetosphere have been carried out with a PEPSIOS spectrometer at the Hale 5 m telescope. Spectral resolving power was sufficient to resolve the forbidden line S II line widths. From measured 6716-6731 A doublet ratios and spectral line widths a thermal plasma is found characterized by temperatures about 2 x 10 to the 4th K and electron densities about 2000 cu cm. The source of forbidden line S II emissions was centered within a toroidal region of radius 5 Jupiter radii (inside the orbit of Io), with tight latitudinal confinement near the equilibrium equator for ions in the tilted corotating Jovian magnetic field, and significant long-lived longitudinal structure.

A redetermination of the Uranus rotation period

The rotation velocity of Uranus has been measured by a comparison of spectroscopic profiles for the 5281.8 A Fraunhofer line reflected from Uranus and the moon. This method yields a rotation velocity which is insensitive to atmospheric seeing conditions. Our value for the equatorial velocity is 3.5 + or - 0.4 km/sec.

A search for the H2 /3, 0/ S1 line in the spectrum of Titan

Results are reported for measurements of the quadrupole S1 line of the (3, 0) absorption band of H2 in spectra of Titan, which were performed at an effective resolution of 0.09 A by scanning with a PEPSIOS spectrometer over a range of 0.85 A centered at the expected position of the investigated line and sampling in 80 contiguous channels. No statistically significant H2 (3, 0) S1 feature is found in the spectra, but a three-sigma upper limit of 3 mA is set for the equivalent width of the S1 line that might be present in a co-added spectrum. It is concluded that these measurements do not provide any evidence for the presence of H2 in the atmosphere of Titan.

The evaluation of a shuttle borne lidar experiment to measure the global distribution of aerosols and their effect on the atmospheric heat budget

A shuttle-borne lidar system is described, which will provide basic data about aerosol distributions for developing climatological models. Topics discussed include: (1) present knowledge of the physical characteristics of desert aerosols and the absorption characteristics of atmospheric gas, (2) radiative heating computations, and (3) general circulation models. The characteristics of a shuttle-borne radar are presented along with some laboratory studies which identify schemes that permit the implementation of a high spectral resolution lidar system.

Observation of HD on Jupiter and the D/H ratio.

The measurement of the HD (7467 A) 4-0 P(1) absorption line on Jupiter was carried out during integration times on an off-axis PEPSIOS spectrometer with a resolution exceeding 100,000. A nearly model-independent number ratio D/H was determined for the Jovian atmosphere by comparing the results with the H2 (6367 A) 4-0 S(1) line.
