Next Generation Space Telescope Integrated Science Module Data System

The Data system for the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) Integrated Science Module (ISIM) is the primary data interface between the spacecraft, telescope, and science instrument systems. This poster includes block diagrams of the ISIM data system and its components derived during the pre-phase A Yardstick feasibility study. The poster details the hardware and software components used to acquire and process science data for the Yardstick instrument compliment, and depicts the baseline external interfaces to science instruments and other systems. This baseline data system is a fully redundant, high performance computing system. Each redundant computer contains three 150 MHz power PC processors. All processors execute a commercially available real time multi-tasking operating system supporting, preemptive multi-tasking, file management and network interfaces. These six processors in the system are networked together. The spacecraft interface baseline is an extension of the network, which links the six processors. The final selection for Processor busses, processor chips, network interfaces, and high-speed data interfaces will be made during mid 2002.

A new high-speed IR camera system

A multi-organizational team at the Goddard Space Flight Center is developing a new far infrared (FIR) camera system which furthers the state of the art for this type of instrument by the incorporating recent advances in several technological disciplines. All aspects of the camera system are optimized for operation at the high data rates required for astronomical observations in the far infrared. The instrument is built around a Blocked Impurity Band (BIB) detector array which exhibits responsivity over a broad wavelength band and which is capable of operating at 1000 frames/sec, and consists of a focal plane dewar, a compact camera head electronics package, and a Digital Signal Processor (DSP)-based data system residing in a standard 486 personal computer. In this paper we discuss the overall system architecture, the focal plane dewar, and advanced features and design considerations for the electronics. This system, or one derived from it, may prove useful for many commercial and/or industrial infrared imaging or spectroscopic applications, including thermal machine vision for robotic manufacturing, photographic observation of short-duration thermal events such as combustion or chemical reactions, and high-resolution surveillance imaging.

General-Purpose Driver For Arrays Of Photodetectors

Electronic system containing both digital and analog circuits supplies clock waveforms at frequencies up to 12 MHz and/or bias voltages in 16 output channels. Designed to provide low-noise driving signals for any of variety of arrays of photodetectors. Clock waveform and/or bias in each channel adjusted independently of others to suit requirements of specific array of detectors. System offers primary advantage (adjustability) of prior laboratory systems, but at cost, power, and size like those of prior dedicated, field-deployed systems.

Flexible Generation Of Array-Detector Timing Signals

Assembly of custom-made electronic equipment and multipurpose commercial electronic equipment commonly found in electronics-development laboratories facilitates generation and modification of timing pattern signals for control of array detectors. Designed to serve as flexible electronic array-detector-testing apparatus configured via software; timing patterns created, stored, and changed easily. Assembly prepared for experimental evaluation of new detector design in much less time and less expense than necessary to construct special circuits to generate all timing patterns to be tried on new design.
