Research priorities and plans for the International Space Station-results of the 'REMAP' Task Force

Recent events in the International Space Station (ISS) Program have resulted in the necessity to re-examine the research priorities and research plans for future years. Due to both technical and fiscal resource constraints expected on the International Space Station, it is imperative that research priorities be carefully reviewed and clearly articulated. In consultation with OSTP and the Office of Management and budget (OMB), NASA's Office of Biological and Physical Research (OBPR) assembled an ad-hoc external advisory committee, the Biological and Physical Research Maximization and Prioritization (REMAP) Task Force. This paper describes the outcome of the Task Force and how it is being used to define a roadmap for near and long-term Biological and Physical Research objectives that supports NASA's Vision and Mission. Additionally, the paper discusses further prioritizations that were necessitated by budget and ISS resource constraints in order to maximize utilization of the International Space Station. Finally, a process has been developed to integrate the requirements for this prioritized research with other agency requirements to develop an integrated ISS assembly and utilization plan that maximizes scientific output. c2003 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Three-Lobed Shape Bifurcation of Rotating Liquid Drops

The evolution of axisymmetric equilibrium shapes of a rotating liquid drop can be extended beyond the 2-lobed shape bifurcation point if the rotating drop is driven in the n=2 axisymmetric shape oscillation (perturbation), where n is the mode of oscillation.

Dual-temperature acoustic levitation and sample transport apparatus

The properties of a dual-temperature resonant chamber to be used for acoustical levitation and positioning have been theoretically and experimentally studied. The predictions of a first-order dissipationless treatment of the generalized wave equation for an inhomogeneous medium are in close agreement with experimental results for the temperature dependence of the resonant mode spectrum and the acoustic pressure distribution, although the measured magnitude of the pressure variations does not correlate well with the calculated one. Ground-based levitation of low-density samples has been demonstrated at 800 C, where steady-state forces up to 700 dyn were generated.

Experimental study of the oscillations of a rotating drop

Two- and three-lobed oscillations of a rotating liquid drop immersed in an immiscible fluid of comparable density and the same angular velocity were studied experimentally. Using acoustically suspended drops, it has been found that the relative change in the resonance frequencies of the axisymmetric drop-shape oscillations Delta omega-l/omega-l(0) is proportional to the square of the normalized angular speed (Omega/omega-l/0)-squared when omega-l greater than 2 Omega. This is in agreement with a recent analytical study of the same problem. Some preliminary results regarding the effect of rotation on the free-decay rate of the two-lobed oscillations are also presented.

Acoustical-Levitation Chamber for Metallurgy

Sample moved to different positions for heating and quenching. Acoustical levitation chamber selectively excited in fundamental and second-harmonic longitudinal modes to hold sample at one of three stable postions: A, B, or C. Levitated object quickly moved from one of these positions to another by changing modes. Object rapidly quenched at A or C after heating in furnace region at B.

Acoustic Methods Remove Bubbles From Liquids

Two acoustic methods applied to molten glass or other viscous liquids to remove bubbles. Bubbles are either absorbed or brought to surface by applying high-intensity Sonic field at resonant frequency. Sonic oscillation increases surface area of bubbles and causes them to dissipate.

Large-amplitude free and driven drop-shape oscillations - Experimental observations

A quantitative study of some nonlinear aspects of drop-shape oscillations in a liquid-liquid system has been completed. The results suggest a soft nonlinearity in the fundamental resonant mode frequency as the oscillation amplitude is increased. Indications of an increase in the rate of decay have also been obtained. A study of the internal flow fields has revealed patterns of circulation not present at low amplitude.
