A Blockchain and PKI-Based Secure Vehicle-to-Vehicle Energy-Trading Protocol

With the increasing awareness for sustainable future and green energy, the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) is growing rapidly, thus placing immense pressure on the energy grid. To alleviate this, local trading between EVs should be encouraged. In this paper, we propose a blockchain and public key infrastructure (PKI)-based secure vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) energy-trading protocol. A permissioned blockchain utilizing the proof of authority (PoA) consensus and smart contracts is used to securely store data. Encrypted communication is ensured through transport layer security (TLS), with PKI managing the necessary digital certificates and keys. A multi-leader, multi-follower Stackelberg game-based trade algorithm is formulated to determine the optimal energy demands, supplies, and prices. Finally, we propose a detailed communication protocol that ties all the components together, enabling smooth interaction between them. Key findings, such as system behavior and performance, scalability of the trade algorithm and the blockchain, smart contract execution costs, etc., are presented through numerical results by implementing and simulating the protocol in various scenarios. This work not only enhances local energy trading among EVs, encouraging efficient energy usage and reducing burden on the power grid, but also paves a way for future research in sustainable energy management.

HELIOCOMM: Wireless Controls State-of-the-Art Report

This report introduces the concept of wireless controls in heliostat-based concentrating solar thermal power (CSP) systems. Specifically, the need for wireless communications to be implemented within the heliostat-based CSP systems is identified versus the existing approaches that follow wireline connections which suffer from high installation, operation, and maintenance cost. Furthermore, this report analyzes the most recent advances in the field of developing wireless controls in heliostat-based CSP systems, which are highlighted to be in their infancy given the primitive wireless networking solutions that they currently utilize and test. The main contribution of this report is the introduction of a novel HELIOCOMM system that supports the wireless controls in heliostat-based CSP systems by exploiting the next generation networking technology of integrated access and backhaul. Furthermore, the proposed HELIOCOMM system performs an artificial intelligent clustering approach of the heliostats and clusterhead selection and develops an entropy-based routing model to enable the heliostats to communicate with the central station by considering their energy availability and network traffic. Also, towards efficiently exploiting the limited resources in the developed wireless communication system, a resource allocation module is introduced that performs the maximization of the energy efficiency of each heliostat by minimizing its corresponding experienced end-to-end latency to communicate with the central station, while performing an intelligent bandwidth splitting in the access and backhaul wireless links. The overall architecture is presented, and its individual building components are discussed in detail.

Networked Microgrid Cybersecurity Architecture Design Guide: A New Jersey TRANSITGRID Use Case

Microgrids require reliable communication systems for equipment control, power delivery optimization, and operational visibility. To maintain secure communications, Microgrid Operational Technology (OT) networks must be defensible and cyber-resilient. The communication network must be carefully architected with appropriate cyber-hardening technologies to provide security defenders the data, analytics, and response capabilities to quickly mitigate malicious and accidental cyberattacks. In this work, we outline several best practices and technologies that can support microgrid operations (e.g., intrusion detection and monitoring systems, response tools, etc.). Then we apply these recommendations to the New Jersey TRANSITGRID use case to demonstrate how they would be deployed in practice.

Centralized and Decentralized Distributed Energy Resource Access Control Implementation Considerations.

A global transition to power grids with high penetrations of renewable energy generation is being driven in part by rapid installations of distributed energy resources (DER). New DER equipment includes standardized IEEE 1547-2018 communication interfaces and proprietary communications capabilities. Interoperable DER provides new monitoring and control capabilities. The existence of multiple entities with different roles and responsibilities within the DER ecosystem makes the Access Control (AC) mechanism necessary. In this paper, we introduce and compare two novel architectures, which provide a Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) service to the DER ecosystem’s entities. Selecting an appropriate RBAC technology is important for the RBAC administrator and users who request DER access authorization. The first architecture is centralized, based on the OpenLDAP, an open source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). The second approach is decentralized, based on a private Ethereum blockchain test network, where the RBAC model is stored and efficiently retrieved via the utilization of a single Smart Contract. We have implemented two end-to-end Proofs-of-Concept (PoC), respectively, to offer the RBAC service to the DER entities as web applications. Finally, an evaluation of the two approaches is presented, highlighting the key speed, cost, usability, and security features.
